Have you tried Wikipedia yet for some info? Thats usually a good starting place if un-academic

http://home.scarlet.be/~ping7849/whatdiabolo.htm

This isn't very scholarly, but it came up on a google search and seems interesting.

http://www.chineseyoyo.com/chinese_yoyo.html

Again, not very scholarly, but a starting point.

Hope this helps a bit.

Sorry, I should've made it clearer.  I need it to be the chinese yo yo instead of diabolo because diabolo isn't chinese... sorry.  and I've been to those sites and I found on many sites that say it was invented in the ming dynasty but the first link you gave said it was created about 2000 years before that!  I dunno but thank you for your effort.

How specific do you really need to get?  From what I remember from last years presentations, they all stunk, and no one payed attention.  Just tell a few basic details (eg, It originated in china) and then show them, that'll keep them interested.     (By the way, its so unfair you're getting out of school for that...I should be in the presentation, asian pride!!!).
There are 11 types of people in the world.  Those who can count in binary and those who can't.

Found some stuff if you are interested?

This game was invented in China somewhere between the 4th and 3rd millenium B.C.  At that time it was given many names, such as "Kouen-gen", during the Han dynasty (since 206 B.C.), wich means: "make the hollow bamboo stick whistle". In fact, in china, Diabolos are still made out of bamboo with openings on the sides that create a whistling sound when spinning.

Apart from that i cant find anthing else sorry but it seems no one really knows about where it alll started.

But i agree with Matt just make somthing that sounds good and then bust out some tricks that will leave them wanting to get one.

This isn't related to history, but I thought this was pretty interesting:

Sounds like people are still using the one-sided diabolos in China, which is really cool. Looks like the plastic/metal model is pretty well-made too..
