Well, I have made a work at school. (I was help by Trash and Priam on it :p). Well, diabolo was created about 4000 years, in asia. It was use at religious endings, like "party" and sacrifice. It became later a toy, and it is when Napoleon was in France that it became really popular ( years ~ 1815). It was originally call "Kouen-gen", and it was made in bamboos, with little hole on it (that why it is call Diabolo, because it was doing a Hell noise (Diable = Satan)" to whisper.

If I am able to find my work, maybe I can sacn it and send it, but it is in french :)

Mingo, no offense but that's really wrong.

It was created during the Ming Dynasty like 1300's - 1600's.  It was a toy from the beginning and it is called ce lin (prounonced tzuh ling) and it can also be called and diabolo is derived from greek.  Dia meaning to throw and bolo means up.

Josh, no offense but that's really wrong
dia- (Greek)
through; across
bolo-(Greek)
throw; that which is thrown
:P

Having said that, what little research I have came across often gives compelling reasons for naming it with a devil aspect as well, go figure

Well i went through that MB book Diabolo88 mentioned; and it does have and interesting pair of pages with Diabolo history.. Well the correct theory according to this (which is backed up by some professional researches) is that the Diabolo was invented about 5000 years ago in China. Its motive was just to entertain.. there were ceremonies around it and later on it expanded thoughout europe; starting in France as a "very strange asian object". That's the basic info.. I'll gladly hand out more info if you want ;)

Okay here is a report I did on Diabolo a bit over 2 years ago. Some of the information is probably wrong but this is some of the information I have:

Quote

The first diabolos can be traced all the way back to ancient china. Just like nowadays and dated back to around 5000 years ago, the diabolo was used as a skillful toy. The original diabolos were made from bamboo which would be spun and thrown into the air and then caught on the string again. Many hundreds of years ago the diabolo made its way to Europe. It was highly enjoyed by many people that in France in the1920’s it became so popular that it almost overcame tennis as a national sport. The diabolo was well known in Germany and Holland  in the 1940’s and 1950’s and it received the name “diabolo” from a faze of popularity in Spain.
Thousands of years ago when the Chinese crossed the Bering Strait into what is now Alaska, they brought with them the knowledge of the diabolo.
In the 1960's, explorers discovered the island of Sanikilauq in the North West Territories. This island has gone untouched by the outside world for thousands of years, was home to a small population of Inuit who actually played with the diabolos the game of diabolo was called Katagaitailiyuk which when translated from their language mean “balancing game”. The game of diabolo had been played in the community as long as anyone could remember. Various items such as bone, driftwood or even animal skulls were used as a diabolo, which was spun on sinew.

Yeah I used them a few times, really heavy and hard to control, and the whistle they make can be quite annoying. Still haven't been able to get the one-cupped one going. The woman at the stall in China showed me though, crossed string and a strange speed up while rotating on the spot... then she dropped it off the string and let it spin on the floor like a spinning top  :o

Dan Higgins of Higgins Brothers here. www.higginsbrothers.com

Just wanted to clarify something. The Inuit history of diabolo is my discovery. Learned it all on my own. I was told this story by an Inuit girl at a tradeshow.  That's why its in our diabolo instruction manual. Coolio?

From the researches done through The Planet Diabolo Project :

- In Beijing I have met with the director of the Diabolo Museum of Beijing, who said that the oldest official documented or physical proofs of diabolo in China are around 900 hundred years old. (Full interview of him on "Diabolo is a trip")

- from our meeting with Reno, a french guy collecting all sorts of archives about diabolo (check out his website: http://www.museediabolo.fr/#Accueil_Home_.aB)
diabolo arrived in Europe with the missionaries in Beijing by the end of the 18th century. It only took his name of diabolo around the end of 19th century - early 20th.

Those are 2 pretty reliable sources with a lot more to teach us on diabolo history that what I have just mentioned here...

The Inuit people had it too? I'm not saying I'm outright skeptical. I just haven't seen it any other source. Would be very interesting if there was a bit more solid evidence beyond anecdotal.
Sorry for my awful posts years ago. I was even more anal and un-self-aware than i am now.
