Love Handles Home made hand sticks
« on: May 22, 2008, 01:30:41 pm »
I spent the last few nights brain storming about hand sticks and came up with a few ideas ,
not exactly new design ideas but ways which meant i could make my sticks myself with a few basic tools .

i have used aluminum tube hollow with solid aluminum plug ends ,
the string is fitted like the carbons through the handle, but slides all the way up to the top once you tie the knot to save on string.

I have not fitted hand grips yet but at the moment one stick weighs 29 grams,
they are just a quick prototype but i am happy so far, the are fairly strong but the plug inserts need working on , but i have a plan.

the design allow for custom weight changes, and allows you to change the sticks center of  balance  (if that matters)

now off to play diabolo with the crazy Spanish lady.

ill post pictures and final weight when i have them.

I fitted some silicone grips to the sticks last night which brough the weight to 43 grams per handle.

almost identical in weight to my Henry's aluminum sticks

I am not happy about that so I have ordered some foam tubing to make hand grips, and that should drop the weight nicely.

They should be the lighter than any other aluminum sticks that i know of and strong too.

these ends will be rounded and the plug insert mounting will be seamless

tie one knot and pull it through easy, eliminates string waste and Mr B's fancy yet fragile screw on tips.

these are just a quick prototype with out proper chamfering, central drilling etc

Must test to destruction first, I will only sell them if I am 100% happy with there build Quality and durability.

This morning I was talking to a man who is a welder by trade and does a lot of work with aluminum, so i think i have the soloution to my final problem :)( and its a light weight solution)

Wow, that's pretty innovative and, when you think about it, obvious. Good on you for making some.

I'd be really interested in buying some with foam grips, or just buying some and fitting the grips myself.

Are they quite a bit thicker than henry's sticks? what sort of length are they?

Also, nice to see some whole milk there, sustenance for stick whittling.

They are 12mm thick

The Length of the ones in the picture are the same length as henry's aluminum sticks .
I wanted to make them the same as the Henry's for weight comparison and to see how the balance/feel of them compared to the Henry's.

I can make them any Length required (between 3 to 100 cm ).

I never saw the performer sticks and cant find any pictures on-line.
I did a search on here for them and had a quick read.
They were too heavy, too long, and the end plugs came out.
Nice to see where they went wrong, ill try and avoid the same mistakes .
could not find out about the string mounting but its only logical that its been done before, in some shape or form.

Thanks for the feedback,

Looks pretty proffesional :), only wonder though if the aluminum caps at the end will cause much fraying potentially severing the string. ???

My MB Xtreme G3's haven't really crapped out on me, except the grip on one went bye-bye during a genocide... I've put them through their paces...

But these look nice, consider anodizing to get custom colors? I always wanted that in a diabolo stick.

the ends wont fray the string once they are smooth .
they will be rounded , not like the picture above

hello dude

If you can create something that is very similar to the henrys ali's in terms of weight and thickness [I love both feature's] but stronger and with a choice of colours and grips then I think youd be on to a winner! [i.e id buy a set]

pics look great if a little wide for my taste.

Not sure yet but i think these sticks are as strong as if not stronger that the Henry's.
As far as colour choice and grip choice , I can do that its easy  but would never be able to sell them at a reasonable price.

I am starting to think its not really a runner to make these sticks economically.
i might make one batch of them and take it from there, but to make them the quality i want is very time consuming.
unless i can find a cnc machinist
looking into that too

I love custom handsticks, they're more for your own benefit than an audience benefit, but they're still nice.

You seem like you have a good idea.  How is the variation in centre of mass achieved exactly?  Although a tad chunky for my tastes.  They should be stronger than Henrys aluminiums from the view that it's 12mm OD compared to 8mm OD.

Keep us posted.

the ones in the picture are off some old devil stick handles that a friend had but they are a bit too heavy.

I have ordered some rubber/foam grip and am waiting on the postman.

well i cant be giving away all my secrets, but the handle is hollow and it has  end plugs on both ends, changing the length/weight of these plugs alters the balance.

I have started working on a set with a 8mm OD.
I dont now how strong they will be, but they should be really light.

Yeah the thing that would worry me about a thinner hollow aluminium stick is the susceptibility to bending/snapping.

I'm using 8mm aluminium tube (actual specification unknown) but bending and snapping have not been an issue with me.  Perhaps due to a style and complete lack of diabolo playing.  Although 8mm tube (might be 1/4") was *far* too light so I stuck some wood down the shaft to increase weight and give a little bit more stiffness.

I think I'm understanding how your sticks varying center of mass, although a word of advice; putting more weight at the handle end is rarely desired and causes all sorts of stick swinging-ness.  My previous sets had screw on masses to vary the stick weight, but it wasn't very good.  If you can move the balance mass as desired inside the stick, then you'll be onto a winner.  Don't underestimate how much extra weight handle material adds.

I had to abandon the 8mm tube idea as the only one i could find was way to weak.

I looked at 10mm OD tube and it could be a runner but i don't have any money to buy the materials at the moment.

Thanks for pointing out to keep the hand end of the stick light. The end plug on the first set i made weighs less than 1 gram. so safe there.

rubber grips or silicone are surprisingly heavy, at the moment i think 1/3 of my sticks weight is the silicone grip.

still waiting on my foam grips to arrive from England, i don't know what they will weigh ,but fingers crossed.

Have rounded my sticks a bit more and polished the edges to reduce string damage time to test drive them now. look close and you can see  where the end plug has been attached .

i have been playing with these sticks since i made them and am very happy with the feel of them.
I have changed the hand grips to black foam type and that has reduced the weigh nicely.
I weighed the sticks yesterday and the two sticks with string attached are 73 grams. as far as i can remember the Henry's sticks plus string weighed 87 grams, not totally sure about that.
So they are lighter than the Henry's aluminum sticks and strong too they have not bent at all ,and i have been trashing them.
I would like to make more sticks but i have changed the design to make them more durable and easier to change strings(very small changes you would not really notice).

I do not want to sell the sticks with the current design because they are not 100% perfect, but if anyone really wants a pair let me know and we can sort something out in the near future.

never really used them sticks , but i guess they have to be similar ,
but with out them fiddly bits to break, oh and lighter ;D

they don't cut the string as they are smooth, smash the about on the ground then they get a little rough.
bring out the sandpaper smooth again

just finished making a 10mm OD set of sticks,
have fitted with hand grips and they weight only 61 Grams.
So far i am really happy with them but i need to give them a good trashing to see how strong they are .
the 12mm od sticks were super strong so i thing the 10mm ones will be strong enough.
off to play now

just checked my weights and am so happy the Henrys carbons(short) are 1 gram heavier :-X

Fingers crossed they are strong enough

opps i made some weight calculation errors
the 10 mm OD Love Handles weigh 56 grams(pair).Compared to Henrys carbons (short) weighing 62 grams.
I have been usuing them for a few days and they are strong.
The only question is are they too light, but adding weight is easy.

OK I have been away from Diabolo.ca for a long time now, for many many reasons.
I have finally managed to break my home made diabolo sticks,by throwing them on the ground and kicking them about the place.

After almost 1 years use i am happy to say my love handles are the best diabolo sticks in the world (in my opinion).

I know there was a lot of talk about sending out some sticks to various people around the globe and talk of selling them too,but i never got around to this.Sorry to people i let down things have been crazy around here and suddenly making  diabolo sticks was no longer important.

Well my point is I am making me some new sticks in the next few days,do ye/anybody want me to make a tutorial/step by step guide to making your own super strong, super light sticks. ?

PS i can make sticks to order if you want as i am now jobless and have more time to spare,

I WILL have the sticks in the post before next weekend, they will be with out grips .I recomend you buy 2mm silicon covered devil sticks,,and use the grip from this. I dont see the point in me ordering the sticks by mail order(paying for postage) and having to charge you guys more for heavier postage. you could try 1mm grip if you want super light sticks .
if you have pm me a question i have not covered please send me another pm.

They look cool.  I got a few questions though.  Do they vibrate alot on a really bad grind(one that lasts like.0004 seconds lol)?  Is the tip rounded to preserve the string? Also, could you name them after me? :D
