Vertax - down-vertax / four points vertax tutorial
« on: July 27, 2008, 03:07:13 am »
Hi friends,

People ask about advanced tutorials quite a lot and since many of
you people can't attend to FDC (Finnish Diabolo Convention), i decided
to share one of the workshops with you. Here is the general idea,
probably we will start with this concept and see where the workshop
goes after this.

The whole thing is about doing vertax (excalibur) in different positions.
Down and up.  The tutorial isn't the easiest way to learn things so
if there is any questions about this stuff. I'd be delighted to answer them.
So just write it down here or if you're coming to EJC or FDC this year just
come and chat with me.

Concentrate for 10minutes on this.  ;) Here's the tutorial:

(Edit - Sean: Click twice on the video and switch to high quality. It's worth it.)

Experiment on this stuff and feel free to use it. Have a great summer.

hmmmm.  An interesting concept.
Gotta thank ya here Marko, i was getting a little bored of diabolo lately but now that you've given me something to chew on, I think I'll be experimenting with this idea of yours.    ;D
And I thought the tutorial was great; not too difficult to understand.

P.S.  i like the way you spazzed out in the last bit of the vid.   I do it quite often too.   ;)

Very nice. I found it interesting. Certainely some more ideas involving the body can be inspired from it. Thanks Marko

Have a great summer.

You are an ambidextrous vertax machine! Fantastic and useful video. Thanks a lot for putting it together.

(It's well worth clicking on the video, going to youtube and watching the high quality version.)

Brilliant tutorial, really well explained which isn't easy when talking about different wraps and postitions. Your English is also very good, speaking that well in a foreign language in England is almost unheard of.

Thanks for that,

So cool! It's like applying the lines concepts from contact into diabolo. I'll definitely be chatting to you about it at the EJC.

I explored this idea a little bit one year ago, I didn't think of it in four points, but somewhere in the middle of July diabolo, you can see me transfer from down vertax to regular vertax, and from regular to lefty. Very interesting concept, genocides are difficult.

I'm glad that so many have liked the tutorial. The concept is really nice and
has much in it. Creating tricks with the concept is pretty easy. When you think
of it, most of the techniques have existed for ages with just normal diabolo and
wraps. This is just the old stuff put together.

The basic idea isn't that hard. Probably the hardest thing to get is to get over
the barrier of starting to do diabolo as ambidextrous. This stuff was the reason
I started to practice some tricks with wrong spinning direction. You'll actually learn
everything much faster since you have done everything already. Thanks also about
the good words about my English. I think i used more time to tape my speeches to
camera than it took me film the tricks. :) So it's all just big bluff, i'm not that good
in English.

Diabolo Bro, it's nice to hear that you have stumbled on the same ideas. I checked the
July diabolo video. Tilting the diabolo helps a lot for the transfer. After some control practice
it becomes really easy.

Now that i read the Collaboration video topic, i get the feeling that i should perhaps have
delayed making this video. So what if we all forget everything about this and i just put
the tricks for collaboration video? ;) Maybe not, i will have to try to make some new stuff then....

very cool tutorial, wraps up some things which have been rattling in my head (and everybody else's it seems) for a while now.
I wish vertaxing didn't hurt my wrists so bad, otherwise I'd be working with this more.

very technical stuff there marko, although it looks better when the diabolo is completely vertical and there were some bits where the diabolo was at 45 degrees.

Btw did you make the music? i can recognise the garageband samples anywhere :)

Tip or just a thought about changing sides. Probably many of you know this already but here we go. When you change the vertax side you'll have to do or undo backside (backwrap, darkside, what ever you call it). Problem or thing about normal vertax genocide is that you'll have to change the stick to the other hand. But when going from the left sided vertax to right side doing the genocide does the job really well. It undoes the backside and therefore is good transition. Thadaa! No more stick changes in vertax genocide. ;)

Ben i hear you. I dislike it being 45degrees. There was the "one" trick (quite bad) but i put it there hoping someone would do it better. Currently i have only good control on the normal vertax. Don't like turning around as a diabolo's slave.  The clip is going to this commercial product which i hardly get any money. It has to be copyright free stuff. Made few mistakes with the boom mike being on the picture also... *grin* So i just have to deal with it, and my homemade music in all of it's "awesomeness".

Marko has posted a video explaining his theory of four-points-vertax, which also necessarily explores down-vertax and ambidextrous vertax. Well thought-out, explained, and filmed Marko's video opens up all sorts of vertax (excalibur) possibilities.

nice stuff, i'll def have to do some exploration too...

on another note, it reminds me a bit of what's called 5 hole theory with staff/poi spinning but obviously isn't the same.
closest thing i could find for an explanation...
http://www.homeofpoi.com/ubbthreads/showflat/-five-hole-style-228767
even wikipedia had something related to this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-hole

even so i cant see how this can be added to what you've come up with.
