How many people can do X*Diabolos?
« on: April 16, 2005, 09:18:35 pm »
Just pondering today about my small existance here in the universe, and wondered;

What are people's estimates of how many people can do 5, 4 3 2 diabolos?

We know that there are 2 people that can do 5d with video evidence, maybe 10 people that can do 4d, 100+ people that can do 3d, who knows how many 2 diaboloers, and a very high number for 1.
By "do" I mean just get it going, so the basic pattern, high or low.  Just wondering how me and my 2d shuffle stand in the grand scheme of things.  And I hope this makes people feel special that there is something they can do better than most.

Had a look at the maths and here's the numbers!

Based upon the your reckonings xfirebladex, that there are 2 folk out there who can do 5 diabs, 10 who can do 4, ~150 who can do 3,   the following exponential formula is returned:

y=0.1923e2.1587x

where y=number of people who can do it
          x=number of diabolos

Applying this "best fit" formula results in the following:

Diabs  -  No of Folk
5  -  2
4  -  14
3  -  125
2  -  1,081
1  -  9,366

Therefore, based upon a current world population of 6.3 billion, if you can pop a diabolo up the air and catch it again you are 1 in 683,000!!

So what would happen if there are a few hidden diabolists out there? Living the hermit life in a damp cave perfecting their skills. :x  Changing the number of people who can do 4 to 15 and 3 to 300 gives the following.

y = 0.1387e2.5053x

Diabs  -  No of Folk
5  -  1.6
4  -  23
3  -  324
2  -  4,581
1  -  64,784

Interesting eh! :wink:

I think northerners are more of an aye than eh.  Unless they're Glaswegian, and then its just all ayes or ehs.

But definately some very interesting statistics, but we all know there are more than 15 people that can do diabolo in the UK, so there must be some diabolo cold spots, maybe someone should go out as a missionary, spread the word and all that group hugging malarky.

Does anyone else have any estimates?

There is a lack of cultural thinking in the numbers. Nice calculations still. For example in china, I guess the number of ppl who have learned one diabolo as a child climbs to several millions.

I guess ability to do 2+ diabolos proves that person has put some effort on training, but learning how to toss and catch 1 diabolo is about 10minutes of practise.

Good indicator to feel better (or worse) than most of the people doing diabolo is to go to ejc and try to show off some previously unseen tricks :)
It's just a world spinning around your diabolo

According to a class mate of mine who comes from china, old ladies practice diabolo in the morning, with diabolos that makes noice. And he was pissed about it, because they started way to early.

I'm chinese and I have never heard that, people practise their martial arts such as Tai Chi and Wu Shun with things that jugglers have taken on board like rope dart, but different juggling styles?  That's just crazy.  Plus quite a few cities too.

And the whistling diabolos are kinda noisy, not a great deal many tricks you can do with them, they're pretty much all axle.  The one sided ones are interesting, you can spin them like tops.

Sorry to bring this old thread back up, but do you guys really think that only 300 people in the world can run three diabolos?  I'm just wondering because I finally am getting three running, and being one of three hundred would be... exciting.  :D

That aint possible that there would be only 300 hundred of us who can do 3d... I bet that there are at least 2000 who can and that sounds still quite small number...   :)

there really isnt any way of being able to tell, statisticaly it makes no sense at all to work out how many do 3, 4 and 5 diabolo from the number that do 1 or 2 (and also no sense to work out how many do 1 and 2 from how many do 3 4 and 5),

Also there really isnt a even a half decent way to geustimate from taking a sample - as to be accurate the sample would either need to be extrememly high, or taken from a population of jugglers, which would be a fairly biased in that case, seeing as only those who are already fairly fanatical over diabolo would be involved in such a sample.

(sorry, didnt mean to go all geeky then, dont know what came over me :P)

Wouldnt almost all 5, 4 and 3 diabolojugglers be known to other diabolists whic in turn know other diabolists?
If somebody think its important enough its just to start to colect names and videoevidence...
