Swing fan tutorial?
« on: May 20, 2009, 07:44:17 pm »
I've searched here, youtube, and jtv, but I can't find a tutorial for the swing fan. If anybody could make one, I would really appreciate it.

I don't know of a tutorial, but there are these 3 threads:
Swinging fan
Fan Swinging
Fan Swinging?

(And now we see why it's nice to keep topics in one thread!  8) )
Here's a useful Google site search

Thanks Sean. I didn't really find any details, like the timing, or how to actually do it, but there was a way in one of those threads to kind of get the motion of the fan down, so thanks. I'll still keep looking for anything else though. So if anyone started a tutorial or something, it's ok to finish it.... jk I don't want to sound ungrateful.

How to actually do it: (assuming you're right handed)
1. Start a fan (can be a regular or s-fan).
2. Keep in mind it can be done entirely with the right hand. Concentrate on this hand at first.
3. As your right hand comes down, bring it to the outside of your body on the right.
4. Rather quickly bring your right hand across your body.
5. Bring it up around the left side of your body and back into a normal fan position.
6. Let your left hand sort of follow.
7. If you're having trouble then learn the 3 beat weave with poi. Google or youtube that for instructions and use whatever you can swing for your poi. The motion is the same and it's probably easier to learn this way.

And just to make this easier for people to figure out in the future. FAQ #368:
What's the difference between a regular fan/AC-fan, S-fan, and C-fan?

What is a mac converter? Does it convert a PC to a mac? ;) If you mean a video converter on a mac, have you tried MPEG Streamclip? The Void wrote a tutorial too.

Sorry to bump this up, but I don't have poi, and I was wondering what I could use instead of poi? I don't have any, and I don't really want to buy them if I'm only going to use them to learn this trick.

I was thinking about swing fan today and came up with this idea:
We usually do a 2 beat swing (correct me if I'm wrong)...
it's possible to do a 4 beat swing with diabolos?
I tried to do it with a poi but it ended in a great mess. (I don't really practice poi like I practice diabolo)
I know that it's possible to do continuous 2 beat swings, but what about a 4 beat?
anyone?

[sorry if I'm replying in the wrong place, I just didn't know certainly where to post this...]

It is possible to make a 4 beat fan. I have seen it quite recently in a vid, though.

Right now i don't remember which one, but perhaps someone else can remember it. I will take a look

edit: i don't find it. But a friend in this video is making 2 beats by the left, 4 beats by the right, and then 2 beats by the left again (1:34). I know that that's easier but at least you can see how hands should move to do 4 beats in a row

thanks.
I've seen this video a long time ago! didn't remember...

the swing-180 move at 0:46 is awesome too
4 beat don't seem to be really difficult, I'll try it later...

thanks!!
