So, the diabolo belongs to my friend David. He told me this story:
He was in East Germany in '89, and went to see the[1] Moscow[2] State Circus. They had their big top set up "in the middle of nowhere, in a wood", and you had to walk for a mile down a track to get there, with people selling black market cigarettes and the like every few yards.
Anyway, in the show was a diabolo artist, who performed 3 low in his act. The 3rd diabolo was thrown in from offstage by another performer. The diabolo in the pictures is one of the ones he was using. David got to talk to him afterwards, and it turns out that he'd hand made his diabolos, turning the axles himself, with the surface of the cups being made by melting down the plastic from his dad's car's dashboard! A swap of 2 Henry's Circus diabolos was made for this one. The inscription is the performer's name, in cyrillic. Can anyone read it? (David can't remember).

If you want a closer look at the diabolo, it's on display at the Juggle-Store in Amsterdam.

Great story!

The diaboloist in me wants to know if he had loads of them to be willing to part with one [and not scupper his amazing act! three low in 89! my act is more out of date than i thought.], Also i can only imagine the feeling of his first few tricks with a pair of circi.

Anybody else got some diabolo history to share?

Loved the story, but I had already seen it for real. Long time ago, on a quest for sillicon's (of which one ripped apart today! :'() I had the luck of seeing it, and have David tell me the same story. No kiddin. Thanks for remembering me!
