Diabolo.Ca Collab 2012 Editor
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:38:36 am »
Hi all!

Although it's only May, I thought since I have been doing more editing than filming at the moment I would like to volunteer to be the editor for this years collaberation video, if thats allright with admins, moderators and other diaboloists.
I have already been planning on how I'm going to edit (music, effects etc), is anyone else volunteering? Because I would REALLY want to be apart of a big project with other diaboloists/jugglers around the world.
If I am chosen to be the editor (I really hope I am) send your clips (3-5???) to my email (badboy_simmons@hotmail.com) and add your name, country, if you have been in a previous collab video (which one) and if you want age.
I promise that if I am the editor it would be a great video to watch with a new twist.
One last thing:
Is there an actual length to a collab video (I want it to be aound 10-15 minutes) and is there a limit of people to be in one (because I want to fit everyone in)!???

Sorry for length of post and all replys welcome!
-Alex

Based on a couple of videos I watched, your music choice doesn't seem like it would be a good fit for a collaboration video. Heavy metal doesn't go over very well in diabolo videos, most people prefer some sort of electronic or laid-back rap/hip-hop.

Some of them didn't even have that much editing in them, it seemed like. Mostly just cuts from one clip to the next, except for that THUD video.

I mostly agree with everything Icebox said. But I am not friend of rejecting volunteers.
I assume that you see the difference between the videos you have already made and what the diabolo.ca pals would appreciate more. And in any case you can always ask for advice to any previous editor, I am sure they'll be glad to help you.

Ok, i will be less lazy and make a new edit with good tasteful music, more effects and advanced editing techniques.
I'm pretty sure that a collab clip should be maybe 10-20 seconds long roughly (although im not sure, they could be any length  :-|), so i would say one combo per clip.

Why don't you watch the older collabs a few times and try to figure out what it is that made them so good?

Actually, what I meant to say is that a powerful edit doesn't necessarily rely on a whole bunch of spacey effect. The best edits don't overdo it, it is all about finesse and feeling for the material you have on hand, the music, the pace of the edit, how everything goes along nicely etc.

my advice from having done the collab last year is, dont think of it as a small project. it takes ages. secondly you dont need as many transitions as i used last year. also. really push people to send things in on time because the longer you wait the harder it gets. thirdly. spend a lot of time on the names. a good effects on the names can make a big difference. dont just leave it till last minute. and check the spelling of all the names a 1000000 times. (sorry eljas)

Yeah, it looks like a big project, although i have worked on projects alot bigger than this before, the only hard thing is time which is what makes this harder then previous stuff i've done. How did you get the clips? Did you get people to email them to you because thats what i was thinking about doing, if i got the part?

Yes i honestly agree with you, although i wasn't really going to use it in the collab anyway (if i got the part) although i know i am going to test some different varieties of music (If i am the editor) and see what fits best.  :)

By the way i have almost finisised the other edit (to show my editing skills), it has alot of good effects and transitions i know most of you would enjoy  :), it is a double edit (a project edited in 2 or more programs) although i'm not sure i should add music as it is only a random test edit to show what i can do. It should be uploaded by the end of the week at the latest  ;).

Hi all again!

Sorry i haven't posted here in a while, but i finally got the edit i said i'd make. It is packed with eccfects and transitions, although of course i probably won't use this many in the collab video (if i get to be editor). This video is just show some of what i can do.  :-D
As i said in the YouTube description (if you're lazy like me   :P):
An edit of lots of footage from many things (as said at end) mixed with some good looking tansitions and effects.
No music, didn't know what to put + i was lazy (as usual).
This is a multi-edit
.
Effects and Transitions Edit

Note - Sorry for lag, YouTub upload stuffed up O.o, also it stuffed up the credits. Here is what they said:
Clips Taken From:
FTSK Films
Vlogs
Unseen Footage
Random Things
Fun Stuff With Friends

Hope you all enjoy and that i can be editor!

@Eric - Waiting later is also a good point (but not too late), but the more time someone spends editing, the better it can be. I'm not saying we should start now though, just agreeing.

Nobody has edited the collab 2 years in a row. Martijn has edited 2 of them ('06 and '08), but he isn't really around here anymore (or if he is, he isn't posting). As such, we have had a different editor every year. I just suggested lucas because I've seen what he can do with footage and I've liked it. Ideally, Nico would be able to do it again since (IMO) the 2010 collab was the best one in terms of editing and effects.

It'd be awesome to be the new editor guys, but right now I can't give this confirmation, I have a lot of work to do on my youtube channel until the end of july, and couldn't deal with a project so big in this moment.

Maybe this year we could a try to have two editors.
Each editor could edit roughly half each the combine them, or even edit a half each then send each other their edits and edit over them again (without deleting stuff, just adding stuff).

What do you guys think?

You'd have to communicate really well and on a very regular basis, but it can be done. I'm not in favour of it though. It seems difficult enough to find one person. Let alone two people who are not only good at editing, but who are also able to work together well enough to make this a success.

This is so cool, I didn't know that so many people here appreciate my work...

You know what, I'll do it!

But I'll not receive new entries now. I'll start getting it in August. we'll probably have 3 months to send (August, september and november). Is it good?
You can start planning and recording already!
Please, at least 720p, I know it's sometimes hard to have a high quality camera but you can always borrow one from a friend! (I did it many times before buying mine, and I live in Brazil, where filming equipment is really expensive, in comparison with USA, countries in europe or other places...)
Lighting doesn't have to be perfect, but at least think about it, also, search for cool backgrounds!
I'll try to put everyone in! (I know the feeling of being out of a collab, and is not that happy), but please, let's make it in high quality!

I can't edit as well as Nico yet, but I'll make my best!

Also, suggestions of good music that can be used (creative commons, attribution license) are always welcome! I have some in mind but I'll probably need more, so if you have a independent band and think that your music could fit, send me! If you find a cool music at jamendo.com, show us!

It can be good to everyone, and we can make a great work together!
Suggestions are welcome too and ca be discussed, always.

Thanks a lot and we'll talk soon!
If you're coming to Brazil, please let me know!

luabduch!!! ya this sounds exciting!! ya for whoever said isnt max doing it earlier. it was fun. but a  lot of hard work and quite stressful. so i would like to do it again someday (maybe in a few years if im lucky) but definately not now. but as someone who has edited the collab i would like to push everyone to be helpful. give all your details (name, location) preferably put it on media fire or simular websites. try and make it mp4 or mov (i found the best) RAR and FLAC are the hardest things to convert.... i couldnt find an rar converter to save my life. and also can EVERY ONE SUBMIT and try and do it in the earlier stages. its stressful as it is, and its really nice to have all your footage. i think i got my last peices of footage after xmas... its not that hard to film a trick, if the weather is holding you back then go out this summer and film a few things. (its always nice to have a couple of tricks filmed somewhere anyways.

good luck to everyone. and it would be awesome to get some more silly ones. (i always remember the lawn mower tricks, i cant even remember most of the others) its always fun and shows how the forums just that bit more friendly if you get what i mean...

thanks

I'll get the submissions throught sites like ge.tt, 4shared, gogle drive, dropbox, or any site you want to upload it and people can't watch it before the real thing is coming.

youtube is not a good idea, it process the video after the upload, we can lose quality.
