Title: Diabolo art
Post by: Arjan on December 01, 2004, 08:51:33 PM
Hello, here you can post your diabolo art, in any way it comes.
Let me kick of:

I was fooling around to create a kewl logo, but the detail don`t shows of unfortually  :(

This image is based on a digital drawing I found on the internet. But sometimes I draw one myself, and digitiallise it.

You guys have some nice artwork there. Arjan, I know you have some great stuff that you've drawn yourself... you should show us some of that too!

Norbi: is that a set of sticks and string in your hand or a knife? It's hard to tell with that evil look in your eyes.  :P

And Eduardo: your angry pig doing a 3 diabolo nose orbit is priceless.

The only diabolo artwork of any kind I've done is the photoshopping of some diabolo images on the diabolo.ca site and for this forum. It doesn't look like there was much work put into the first one, but let me tell you, there was. First keep in mind that I only own 2 white finesse diabolos and that they are anything but clean and nice looking. ;)

and my current profile pic:

which starts to look crappy if you enlarge it too much because I didn't do all that careful a job of it. All of the colouring is real. I took a picture of a set of white diabolos and red diabolos, cut out a maple leaf shape from the red diabolos and placed them on top of the whites. The images don't quite line up correctly, but I didn't worry about it because you can't tell when it's only 80 pixels wide.

I love the maple leaf image.  I was wondering if you had actually got Henry's to whip you up a whole set of personalised Diabolos.

The vector art is most cool. I've not done any in years and I've not got Corel Draw anymore (only Illustrator which I'm not yet used too).

Have some arty photos.

yes, i realize that none of the tricks are that good, but, i had to hold the camera remote in my mouth, start up, push the remote with my teeth and spit it out giving me about 5 seconds to spare before the shutter would go...

if anyone is near the phoenix area, would love to get photos of someone doing some really good tricks...

Some funky photos you got there, like the style.  Definate art styling (not that I follow art all that well.)
If you don't think your skills are that up, watch a few more videos, practise some more, develop a style of your own.  The flag swinging is cool too.

The photography method reminds me of trying to film myself doing diabolo tricks on a camera that could only film 30 seconds.  Not fun.

That and the DSSS guy thing (and Arjan's Stqatue of liberty 'shop) make me think there should be a general diabolo art/picture photoshop thread or competition thing.

Hey guys (and girls)

I was just playing with my crappy digital camera and making some pictures. I always wanted a picture of me doing a sprinkler, because it looks cool. So I put the camera on automatic (10 sec.)
On the 3rd attempt I guessed right and did a sprinkler. The result was very cool I thougt, so I would like to share it.

cool! now go outside!!! those shots are sweet, a little bland though because you're inside.

pretty impressive, you can achieve stopped motion with around 1/500 or so (check out my double sprinkler a little upwards, that was 1/500 at f/5.6), 1/1600 is killer though. why does your crappy (sorry :P) Casio do 1/1600 and my Sony only does 1/1000 :( cant wait to get my nikon D50, max shutter speed 1/4000... Even though I hate iPods, I do like those photos.  I think it'd be a great idea for a diabolo video to be done in that style, if someone's ok with the masks and whatnot during editing.

I think more juggling videos should be mocks of media adverts, like the Nike Freestyle ones.

I can't be 100% sure if the Shiltons didn't, but they did team up with other Israeli Jugglers (Roths, Eden Zak etc) to do a mock of the Nike - The Mission commercial.

There's a clip on www.juggling.tv or a fellow juggling 3 footballs in the Freestyle format.  How hard can it be?  Stand in front of a metallic black background, and pull off diabolo tricks infront and under the camera with poor lighting.

Easier said than done of course.

the low quality is on purpose, it's some kinda 'blur filter' he told me. And yes, I have heard from a girl that I look really hot there .
And Jack Black, I take that as a compliment.

just use Media Player Classic, and use a renderless mode (VMR7 or VMR9). File-->save image ;) (you may have to adjust the aspect ratio though).

What about for the front design to have a frogfighter doing 3d low and have the phrase'Go Draco with your diabolos!

I would leave the front blank, as I find that phrase as something taken straight from a cartoon network cartoon or something like that, the frog looks nice though.

The cutting out on that middle ball looks really rough here. There are a lot of jagged lines and some pieces of white border around it. I think that you would be better off just drawing some balls instead of using a photo.

Still, nice work on the videos. I'm enjoying the odd stick grind suicide thing.

Heya Tommi, nice drawing checked ur dev out.

Do u only draw with pencil/pen etc? I draw alot too, and i mostly use my wacom tablet when i want to make a serious drawing or something...
And do u use PS alot for colouring etc? Or just good ol' pencil etc?

Greetz me
Title: Diabolo art
Post by: tommi on June 11, 2006, 05:12:30 PM
hey g0t.

I usually use more traditional stuff, pencils, ink, watercolors etc. I have used photoshop for coloring like one time, and the picture turned out quite nice. But I don't own wacom or anything like that so I most of the time use something else, I like to mix different techniques together. But I would like to learn more with PS.

Do you have your art online? I would love to see some of your drawings.

We are going bit offtopic.. Hope it doesn't matter.

Just thought I'd point out that Butterfingers is running a competition to find a new cover for their colour catalogue. Winners will have their names featured on the front of the catalogue and also win £150 of whatever equipment they choose from Butterfingers.  All the details are on their site (http://www.butterfingers.co.uk).

Wouldn't it be lovely to have something diabolo related on the cover?

for a cover, no.
Find more appealing backgrounds, and don't be too edit-horny. Also, nice clothes without to much patterns withouth nike, puma, adidas and so on on them.
And to me motion-blur is butt-ugly atleast where it barely shows, go with it or don't.

I wasn't. Thanks for you advice. I see your point of view though. I didn't put in the 'motion-blur' as you're putting it, These pictures where taken from a video so there isn't much I could do about it. And anyway, Trying to get a good picture from a digital camera is (unless its a good camera) VERY HARD!

You don't need to be an expert to give your opinion. For example: you can tell when a 5 club cascade looks ugly, even when you are not even capable of doing 5 clubs yourself. It's a mistake I often see...

Sorry Will i dont like any of your pictures.
This is just some quick photoshop-filter work and playing around with color-adjustments. this is something everyone can do (yes you can do it too fredo. simply "get" photoshop, open a picture and click "filters" thats everything).
This is no art...

If you want an advanced imaging application but can't afford (or don't want to 'find' Photoshop), then you should look at a program called, unfortunately, The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/).  It's entirely free, cross platform and very powerful.  The question isn't so much about what it can do, rather than how much time you want to put into it.  There's definately no reason to be using tools like Paint if you're really wanting something with more power.

Alternatively, I still like using Paint Shop Pro 7, since I know and like the interface and find it far more intuiative.  It might not have all the features of the current products, but, for me, it still delivers the goods.

The water effect in the image posted above was done, I think, with a third party plug-in called Flood (http://photoshop.pluginsworld.com/plugin.php?directory=adobe&software=photoshop&plugin=201).
However, you don't need Photoshop to be able to use plug-ins like this - PaintShopPro, which is much cheaper, can certainly handle them too.

I did some diabolo based art for my storyboarding class not too long ago. The professor wanted 6 boards (which is EXTREMELY short) trying to sell some object of our choice. We also got to bring the object in. My object was, of course, the diabolo. He liked my boards, but wasn't convinced that the diabolo was as easy to learn as I said it was in my commercial. I tried to get him to try it (I had just taught a fellow student before class started how to keep the diabolo balanced ...took like two minutes), but he was happy in his ignorance.

Anyways, if I can get access to my dad's scanner I'll post them up. They could use a lot of work but I kinda like them.

For picture editing 'The GIMP' (http://www.gimp.org) is very good and it's free. You could also use some form of Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

For video editing Sony Vegas is used a lot. You could also try Adobe Premiere.

Using photoshop elements 2.0 I obviously selected the picture first, then...
Click on the 'Filters' tab, and select the coloured pencil effect,
click apply,
and then you can change the pressure, width and brightness to make it how you want :)

Here's one I just made quicky...

How do you get that effect on photoshop?
Title: Re: Diabolo art

duplicate layer, desaturate 2nd layer, add vector mask, use paint brush with black as the colour, and 'paint' where u want the colour to come out...

Heres a pic of me using my diabolo at night time..

For those curious/on the ball would realise that u cant buy evo light kits like mine shown.. i customised a standard one. If anyone knows much about soldering/electric work, ive figured out the specs of the other LED's so you can remove them and insert new ones that will work on the same resister/batterys.

Try and buy LED's that run between 2.0 - 2.5V and draw about 30mA...

/end rant

Title: Re: Diabolo art
Post by: Graham on April 03, 2007, 11:48:25 PM
Since I don't know how much you know about photoshop, I'm just gonna write this as if you've never used it:
Photoshop has these things called vector shapes, which you create by adding points round the edge of an area of colour and adjusting the  "handles" on the points to change the curves between it and the points either side of it, until the shape perfectly matches the area you're surrounding. (If you use photoshop, it's done with the pen tool, and you have to select the vector shapes option, which is the first of the three icons in the top left of the toolbar, which are vector shape, path, and fill respectively). Then you can just choose a colour for the shape - photoshop fills it for you. My images are done with lost of these shapes, one for each area of colour (drawn from a source photo, obviously). As a guide, that last one had 23 such shapes, plus the string, and it took about 4 hours or thereabouts. I add the details (such as the collar line on this one, and the chin on the first one) with thin black vector shapes with the layer opacity adjusted. The string is done differently since it's a long line rather than a shape; it's just a path which I've stroked with bright yellow using a small brush.

Again, if anyone wants one of these done for their pic, just drop me an email and I'll see what I can do :)

Can I make a suggestion that people cross-post their art in the Diabolo.ca Gallery? The other option would be to post the image only in the gallery and post a link here so the forum pages still load quickly for everyone.

Either way - I think the gallery is a great way to display everyones art in a way that can be easily found and viewed in the long run. ie. who in his/her right mind is going to read through all the previous 27 pages of this thread to find the art. ;)

dont be lazy, post your art!

full size in the gallery...

i had no comments on this because it was only in the gallery. however, i worked on it pretty long(about 3 hours) so i do cross posting like Sean suggested and hope to get some nice comments ;D
the hubs&axle are modeled and textured with 3dsmax, the rest is made in photoshop -for those who are into graphics...

thanks,

Post by: Graham on July 05, 2007, 03:34:01 PM
There's a post a few pages back where I explained how to do it in photoshop... I've never used inkscape but I'd guess that the technique is similar. I think I might have a go with it myself actually.
Title: Re: Diabolo art
Post by: n3mo on July 05, 2007, 04:36:53 PM

--phunky

here it is. essentially a pen tool (same thing in inkscape), trace the edges, and adjust the bevels until it fits your shape. it takes quite a bit of time, especially when you embellish it like phunky does ><

Post by: David - SAS1 on July 05, 2007, 06:25:42 PM
For some stupid reason I thought there was some "vectorise" function that I hadn't found.  Anyway, I will try those instructions
Title: Re: Diabolo art
Post by: Graham on July 05, 2007, 10:45:36 PM
heh, if only. Unfortunately computers can't yet recognise what's in the picture well enough to know where the edges should be :) Photoshop has a function called "posterize" which does it very roughly which is helpful when doing some vectors but it's no substitute for doing it yourself. n3mo's right when he says it takes time - the last one I did (here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paulinesnyder/images/tvector.jpg)) had really complicated hair and that alone took me 4 hours or so... the whole rest of the was only about 2 hours (edit: actually, thinking about it, it was more like 3 or 4) or so combined.

Ok, this is some kind of a logo or something for an imaginative diabolo team.
Maybe we will be "The Green Crumpling Diabolo", but i don't believe it.
Just killing time with photoshop.

For that picture, I used Paint Shop Pro, 3DS Max and ZBrush.  Maybe, to balance things out, the next one should be all colourful and fluffy?

Hey, William, why do you save them as jpegs? Save them as pngs so that the vectors are saved and it looks better, or at least if I understood the article I read right that's what it is or something

Yeah png is better quality, but much bigger file. So I've been happy with jpeg. Much more convenient file sizes.

C'est tre bon.

My only subjective criticism would be that there are too many points of focus.  Again only subjective, but i would have ommited the top right pattern and perhaps leave out the white part of the 'wave' and just let the blue part finish on the left side of the piece.  It's still a very nice effort.

Less is more an all that

"Are those your sticks or are you just happy to see me?" - Curtesy of a great joke maker.

http://midoryu.googlepages.com/diaboloart

*To those of you greatly offended I appologize beforehand with great sincerity.  Rest assured that a good shower and thick layers of clothes were involed.

So...any idea how to work the 'Insert Image' button?

As well, I apologize for the poor image quality, poor shots, and poor setup.  But then again the whole point of art, in short, is to get your message across.  So I'm happy with it. :)

I thought I'd try my hand at a diabolo drawing, so I decided to do a cartoon of me diaboling.  Unfortunately I don't think I look quite so cool and relaxed when actually diaboling, but hey.  :D

It took about three hours to make.  One to draw the original image on paper, and two to digitize it and color it, fix it in Photoshop, etc.

I might eventually change it into my avatar, but I still have some cleaning up to do on it, in the face and such, but I wanted to post a rough version anyway, to see what you guys think.

I saw some literal diabolo art today when I was watching an old film noir movie from the fifties on TCM, Kiss Me Deadly.  Towards the end of the film, the detective walks through a hallway towards a room, and in the hall there are several paintings on the wall.  One was a very distinctive picture of about 7 or so women in dresses diaboloing.  Unfortunately I didn't see it for very long, and wasn't able to record it in time, so I'll have to wait until it comes around again to see the picture, but I'm 100% sure they were using diabolos or Chinese yo yos.

Okay, well I was updating my Myspace profile pic, and I decided I should throw a diabolo in there (pun kinda intended :P).

The photo portion took forever, because I had the camera set to a timer, and by the time I would get all ready and it would take, the diabolo would have run out of spin, and would fall to the ground.  Finally I got one I was okay with, but you can see it's kind of tilting to the left.  ::)  My Fly is in the shipment process, though, so no more 5 second finger grinds for long.  ;D

Yeah, so it's not a great follow-up to CirqueKid's masterpieces, but let's see you start a 2D shuffle and get into a decent pose in the 10 seconds your camera is counting down from to take an automatic picture  :P

I'm going to mess around with pictures some more later today.

Oh, BTW; those colors weren't all applied by simple filters, to get the best effect I drew a lot of that in myself. You might be able to tell which parts because they look a bit irregular (eg. the diabolos, string, pattern on the hat/shirt and color of the jeans).

I found that using the filters I wanted to didn't agree with the image I had in my head, so I did a bit of that manual editing with my graphics tablet.

Thoum_, what kind of trick were you doing when that photo was taken, it looks amazing!

A normal sprinkler (clockwise), but i made my hand turn counter clockwise.
I think there is two and a half revolution on this picture so it looks a bit messy. When I'll have another good photographer to hand, it could be tryable to make just one revolution.

Lovely photo. I like how the two glowing ovals on the ground draw your eye into the diabolo.

Care to add it to the gallery (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?action=mgallery) in the fire and lights section so people will still find it after this thread continues to grow? You retain ownership and control of the image through your account.

This thread is already 46 pages long! I imagine in another few years it will be close to 100 and no one will ever see what's on page 46. ;)

That was my first thought too, although by the composed nature of the shuffle and head angle I assumed it was at least a 7... now it's been confirmed. :)

Lovely photos. Care to add these to the gallery too so they don't get lost in this thread? You can put a link to your website in the comments if you want.

In the other photos, I think you have the meanest looking photo of Thomas Dietz I've ever seen.
