more like, talk over the internet and stuff, not actually go and meet up, unless at a festival or convention. Sectioning off groups as long as they don't bicker doesn't seem like a bad idea... for meet ups at least

I would do that, but in Colorado there are hardly any diaboloists.

Whoo! Go American diaboloists on the East Coast ^_^.
You guys up for an AIM session or something?
I've got IRC and MSN, too.

I think there's some juggling thing at UMD College Park every spring or something, but this is my first year of actual active diaboloing, so I'm not that well informed about these things.

We the people, in order to form a more perfect shuffle....

America's just so dang big. I mean I'm just one state away from the amazing Joblin, but it would take me 8 hours or so to get there.

Some of you young folks should all agree to go to the same college. (There are worse ways of picking a college.)

Eh, I doubt I'd be able to make it to any conventions that are more than two states away :-/. Don't think I'd want to go to WJF and get shunned by other 'real' jugglers :(

UCSD for the win!
Marine Bio... Yay...

We should all get together in a massive group, and go to WJF this year and shun "real" jugglers for not diaboloing XD

ok, well I have gotten into contact with:

-nahxela
-Some other guy I'm not too sure what his username is here

Nope, i don't know many good diaboloists here.
Tomangleberger is pretty good as he's told me,
And Tahn3 lives in richmond but is still pretty much a beginner.
Say, would you happen to live in baltimore? If so, i could meet up with you next time we go up there unless you want to come to charlottesville.

Ah, I know a few people in VA who're decent, but they don't go to this forum, and I actually live on the MD/VA border, so going to Baltimore would probably be more inconvenient for me :-\

And Steve, I'm pretty certain that 80% of us in this thread are in high school, too :-P

I live in Potomac (20854) right by the Potomac River, so getting to VA is literally within walking distance for me :D.
In normal traffic I think it'd actually take maybe 45 minutes... I think...

"Only two hours," you say ::).
Perhaps I could get some of my other friends that live in VA and MD to meet up, too, but I'd need some sort of set date first, and my weekends won't be very clear until december or so (SAT classes take up too much time :-\)

That would be a good time, or perhaps Thanksgiving weekend (if you're back)

Hey Stupendous, I actually am planning on holding a minifestival next year for the Bay Area. Silver Creek Jugglers (advised/founded by Hall) will be holding it, and I will be managing everything since I am the club president. I will post more information as we approach the date, but be sure to spread the rumor around to any jugglers in the bay area. I have never run a festival before, so there may be a chance of failure, but hopfully i can get everything together for it to be a huge success.

Technically diabolos are counted as juggling ::), regardless of the juggling discrimination that ball, ring, and club jugglers seem to have for "pseudo" juggling :(

I assume they know we exist....Chinese yo yo club was at Texas Revue. Humongous talent show w/ cash prizes. A lot of other organizations know of us through performances around campus and such. Hopefully the juggling club isn't so ignorant that they have no idea what other organizations and events are out there.

no, i really don't care enough about juggling conventions to contact them. as long as I'm having fun doing my diabolo thing I could care less what anyone else thinks. I just felt like bringing up the whole "they didn't even shoot us an email" thing to introduce some drama to the thread but it's getting old, don't wanna respond to anymore about it.

On a brighter note, HOOKAH PARTY IN FRONT OF THE TOWER!!!!

(just chipping in from across the pond)
A few years ago there was a BJC held in my home town, I'd been juggling (balls, clubs, devilstick, diabolo etc) for a while but didn't think it would really be my thing.
I've since been to many conventions and cant believe how lame I was passing up that convention and the many between it and when I finally got around to attending them.

It's $8 (free for UT students)? for 3 days worth of juggling/skill toy (whatever you want to pigeon hole it) fun and if I was within striking distance of it I'd be there in a heartbeat.

I don't know if you (Willum) were at UT in 95 and if the Chinese YoYo club had the same 'why havent they asked us to come' type thoughts but if so you missed out on Matt Hall and I know that's a HUGE missed opportunity right there.
Who knows maybe the organisers are sat there thinking, 'WTF we've been holding Jugglefest for the last 15 years, everybody knows about it, why haven't the Chinese YoYo lot turned up or emailed us, we keep bringing diaboloists* to Jugglefest, we have diabolo in the games and run diabolo workshops... what more could they want?'
To be fair, of all the jugglers/convention organisers I have met/heard of, I think ones that would wish to discourage people from coming would be hard to pick out.

Quote
Texas Juggling Society
Austin, Texas
Our Mission

The Texas Juggling Society is devoted to furthering the practice, study and appreciation of juggling and related manipulative arts and equilibristic disciplines. Such skills and activities may include the random or patterned throwing, catching, bouncing, swinging, jumping, twirling, spinning, dropping, rolling, dodging, replacing, mounting, or balancing of an object or series of objects, which may include sticks, stones, balls, clubs, scarves, bags, rings, diabolos, torches, unicycles, or other such items that may appeal to one's innate sense of Juggleness.

Primary functions of the Texas Juggling Society are (a) to render support, guidance and encouragement to individuals wishing to learn or enhance said skills and activities, (b) to arrange by all available means a meeting of regular time and place for open engagement of said skills and activities, and (c) to periodically present to the community said skills and activities for general appreciation and social therapy.
Dont really sound like exclusionary types to me.

Honestly I think they have better things to do than chase up every possible club and you should forget the imagined slight, go along and have a good time, meet diaboloists like Eric, share some ideas, catch a few shows see if it wets your appetite for a bigger event, maybe the IJA/EJC. (or at least pop along in the hope of picking up some diabolo equipment at a good price if they have a vendor there).

*Look at it as an investment. Since more and more diaboloists have been coming to UK/European conventions organisers have catered for us, this means we get a chance to see people like Ryo Yabe, William, Tempei, Matt Hall and Priam at recent BJC's with the Sharpes due at the next one. Vux, Pete, Zack etc at local one dayers etc etc. Similar things can happen in Austin, next year if they're wondering who to bring in and they know that they had diaboloists in 08...

If you don't mind me asking, as I've never been to a convention, I was wondering what exactly one does at a convention (especially if you don't know 99.99% of the people there)?
I'd imagine there would be workshops, performances, and juggling games.

But what do you guys do inbetween???
Title: Re: American Diaboloists, Please Read.
Post by: willum89 on November 15, 2007, 07:40:53 AM
in europe you go and get drunk and watch as time flies by, wheeee!!! Here.....check out downtown? take some pictures and send them back to mommy? I can't think of anything to do in between workshops. Just check out the surroundings, grab a bite to eat, there's really nothing exciting to do during the day.
Title: Re: American Diaboloists, Please Read.
Post by: seán_ on November 15, 2007, 05:04:47 PM
What do you do at a juggling festival? (avoiding the word convention here because that has connotations of clipboards and rigid organisation)

You Juggle diabolo whatever. You trick share, you work on some trick that's been giving you kittens for ages but due to the atmosphere suddenly clicks.
You watch people, get inspiration from both people using your own prop and props that you would think have nothing in common.
You meet new people and make friends, you get to put faces to names and find out about stuff/tricks/gossip that doesn't come up on .ca and internet videos. Basically if you don't know somebody you will by the end of the festival, quite often users of the same props are drawn towards each other.
You drink (booze/tea/water/juice) and eat (meat/vegetables/healthfood/junkfood)
You meet random people and do strange things (http://www.2diabolo.net/sean_/domino.avi)
You experiment.
You take and you give.
You get a pop at picking somebody up who understands your irrational attachment to a 'toy'.
If you want to check out down town, do so. I rarely leave the site, for others they love the opportunity to see somewhere new.
If workshops are your thing attend or offer them. Personally as more of a western styled diaboloist I'd be really happy to attend a diabolo workshop based on Chinese style diaboloing.
If your up for a bit of fun, join in the games. Or watch the games or make use of the space that's freed up or have your own fun.
You watch the renegade and get to see people either doing or trying very strange and or funny stuff, or things at the top at ability that they wont show to a non juggling audience. You get up there your self and see how your peers react.
You get to see a polished show and get to enjoy seeing that (or the chance to pull it apart for where you think it could have been better).
You take picture or video if thats your thing
You go and talk to the traders and see if you can get props for less than you can via mail order. (having had the chance to try them out either at the stall or by borrowing somebody elses.

Basically you can do plenty (or as little as you want)

Wow, thanks for that plethra of info :o
Sounds pretty cool to have so much to do!

What exactly is Renegade? I remember a bit from Diabology where I think Baptiste was doing 3 low while on top of a two leg lift and a few other bits...

Buying props in person sounds quite nice since I have to order everything online because there aren't any juggling stores in my area...
Title: Re: American Diaboloists, Please Read.
Post by: seán_ on November 16, 2007, 12:31:34 AM
Renegade (or late shows) are varied beasts. generally there is a compere (usually a talented one with good crowd control) who might have sorted out a few acts before hand.
At the ones I have been to* people are encouraged to get up and do there thing. Some people have preplanned routines (generally not ones that go on and on), some have just one insane move they want to show.sometimes it might be a strange drunken thing (like 2 people rolabolaing on a beer keg, or Garners vertax genocide with his pants around his ankles - generally this stuff happens later on).
A late show might be a fairly straight show but not one meant for kids or the general public, so the heckles can be viscious, the language and in jokes more relevant and everybody has a better understanding of what's what and dont need to be spoon fed like a GP audience.
Interesting events generally and often an eyeopener - not everybody will enjoy it, not everybody will stay for the whole thing, not everybody will consider the early part the best bit and vis versa

As for vendors, check with the organisers to see if there will be a vendor and if you are thinking of getting anything especially phone ahead and ask if they can bring it.

*not been to a US one but they originated as an alternative to the IJA shows, to the extent they tend to be held away from the IJA venue to avoid friction.

whats this about yo-spin touring the country?
I don't know what ideas are roaming this forum but I was hoping I would find a group of people willing to put together a  festival tour for a band of diaboloists. If we got a promo email with a youtube video link. we might get free ticks and food (like they normally give volenters) and with a good prommotion mabe even some gas money to head out on the road and proform at this outdoor venues this summer. Because this festivals are held in big Fields it seems like the best place for a yo spin.  and because festivals are set up for all kinds of music from modern rock to bluegrass. all People of all types both diaboloists and spectaters will like the diabolo.
so a band of traveling jugglers living in tent city this summer seems like a natural fit. imagine what we could all learn from each other if we got out on the road for a month together. spinning everyothere day stopping at small towns and proforming at big festivals.

has any one tried it? I'd like advice. is any one intrested?

by festival here are some examples "All Good" in WV, "Bonnaroo" TN, "Gathering of the Vibes", NY. and those are the just the ones I've been to.  There are sooo many to choose from.

I'm quite willing to make the trip over and slap anybody who uses the word 'yo spin' in a non-ironic way.
Going around of your own back promoting yo spin helps the company (who for some reason believe Diabolo needed  rebranding) without actually costing them anything. (your not connected with them in any way David?).

Working festivals as a method of meet ups however is a valid idea and worth looking into. A core team with guest artists to cover different parts of the country. It might be worth looking into trading at festivals (juggling equipment) which usually costs (a fee plus you'd need transport and a stand) but you might be able to cut a deal with offers of performances, walkabouts and workshops.

As much as it pains me if Yospin are allready doing this you might want approach them (but dont sell your soul too cheaply)

You guys are crazy!  We never mentioned Yospin.

Basically how it went down was I was watching Diabology and I said to myself "We could totally pull off something like that!"  I was originally thinking of making just a collaborative DVD.  Not necessarily all in one place.  And yeah Sean, basically form a core team that talks on a regular basis and works together.

:D:D:D
I'm tempted to do so.

A diabolo team in America would be pretty sweet, but seeing as a lot of us seem to still be students, our actual group stuff would seem to be very limited...
And working out all those festivals seems a bit much to me for all of us to be able to coordinate :-/

Black Friday for those good 'ole electronic sales at Best Buy and whatnot ;)

as for my creditals I have been to all the festavels I used as examples.  as well as crossing the country twice & my latest and greatest was a 6 month tour of mexico (All 6 months were spent in a cloud coved bus I know no spinash going in)
1ST We need to find a group of good diaoloists That can Commite a Gaven
To do this thing we need a promo video and a profesane looking feel.
next Is to decide a route baced on who gives us what.
Next
Get a car pick up a the kids and go.

To do it cheep we'll have to camp every night.  Eatting out gets expensive fast.  so ham sandwich & cearel.

As for being young.   I would say being 18 or parent consent would be nessasey. however by not having a job. you have the time they say travel when you're young. so let's get out there and do it. WHO'S WITH ME.

I think there's an awful lot of people in that same situation.  I propose an alternative.  Instead of "touring around," we could just make a collaborative thing with famous/neat backgrounds *in your area*  (say for example I could go do something with Niagara Falls in the background)

We could do a video, or a whole dvd if we wanted really.  Kind of an American Diabology.  Let me know what y'all think.

that would be cool, we could have a whole segment on "Three Diabs Around America!" since I just took another step forward and fluked a run!

i think yospin rebranded diabolo because it sounds too close to "diablo". That would make it hard to sell in predominately hispanic communities like Miami or whatever. I agree with their decision. If my child wanted me to buy something called a "satan" i wouldnt buy it either.

People these days are just so overly protective... Who says that it's even intended to corrolate with the devil in the first place >_>
Wish that common sense was more common than it actually is.

Wikipedia is your friend:
Quote from: Wikipedia
Etymology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabolo#Etymology)
"The term "devil" comes from the Greek word "διαβάλλω" (later "διάβολος"), meaning "to throw across". A secondary meaning of "διαβάλλω" is "to slander" or "to traduce", to talk ill about somebody. Hence the name "diabolo" has a connection with the Greek name for the devil. The name is the only thing that has a connection to the devil, and the diabolo is quite unrelated to any supernatural phenomenon. The name "diabolo" comes from two separate Greek words — "dia" and "bolo", meaning "object to throw". The word "diablo" has a Latin rather than Greek derivation."
It is Wikipedia so the usual caveats about reliability apply.

In conclusion, diabolo = "to throw across" or just "object to throw".

Nick.

That's true but I still have a devil of a time trying to explain the word's origin to people. (pun not intended)  ::)

I think this thread has gone a little off topic don't you think?

there are so many UK threads its time Americans had a go at this.

Is there any place that us Americans can get to get together and spin because i can't handle watching another You Tube video.

so I live in the north east.  so I'm going to start there.  when what week end can all of us get together in say  Philadelphia... who would go
how about
New York .... could i convince the sharp brothers to come out?
Id even travel down to DC if we could get a group together
how about The All Good festival.  did any one here attended the All Good festivalin West Virgina. because when I was at the Philadelphia folk festival people keep asking if i was one of the people at All Good
so where are we going to meet
give me some feed back

I live in northern West Virginia, close to the Pennsylvania state line, so I would be up for anything in PA or MD. Or if we are going to just do a video, I could maybe film part of it at Spruce Knob (The tallest mountain east of the Rockies.)

i tried to get a shot in front of the liberty bell yeah the park rangers didn't like that idea.  but philly is a cool place to spin.  when do people get out of class I'm out in 2 weeks when do people want to get together and how can i make this reach the people it needs to.  send the word diabolo gathering in philly soon!

I brought my diabolos to the Grand Canyon once, but chickened out before I got to use them, as I really didn't want to lose a $50 toy down the Colorado. And I'm not sure if the rangers would let me get very far with it either.  :P

As for the team idea, I say we all get webcams and steam ourselves over the internet, which feeds into a large Hi-Def projector at wherever we are preforming together, and we can (almost) be all together onstage.   ;)  Genius, huh?

But anyone in the American Southwest, I'm open for travel to conventions, meetings or whatever!

A bit of a bump from a new diaboloist.  Currently living in New York up by Lake Champlain (Plattsburgh/Burlington area) and would love to hook up with some fellow diaboloists in the area.

When I say "new diaboloist", I mean, really really new.  Like "week old" new.  And I've been watching DVDs and YouTube and checking all the usual sites on how to do stuff, but there's nothing like having someone to bounce things off of, or to check techniques with.

So, anyone out there, nearby?
