Title: Favourite Diabolo Poll 2008
Post by: Sean on December 31, 2007, 02:44:08 AM
For the last 2 years we have been running a poll on people's favourite diabolos (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=422.0). Since that poll was started, a number of new diabolos have been released. Further, it will be interesting to conduct a poll each year and be able to track how preferences change over time.

If you're interested, vote for your favourite diabolo, and if you wish, add a short message about why you prefer that diabolo.

You have 1 vote and won't be able to see the running total until you vote. This poll will expire Dec. 31st 2008.

I'll kick off this year's poll too...

In some way or another I like circus (wide or narrow), finesse (wide or narrow), fly or sun diabolos, Taibolos, and diabigs. I've spent a good chunk of time with each of these and they all have their pros and cons.

However, Taibolos with modified (light) washers are my overall favourite. First of all, they're the only diabolos I can use endlessly without fear of wrist pain. Secondly, they're up there with my favourites for 1, 2, and 3 diabolos. Once you get used to something that light, anything else feels like a brick!

aww no finesse with hubstacks?!
Title: Re: Favourite Diabolo Poll 2008

We could split many of these categories up further G1, G2, G3, axle bearings, light kits, all the circus hubs etc. We have to stop somewhere. If finesses with hubstacks are your favourite diabolo then vote for finesses.

wooo!! finally a new poll, id vote taibolos, but seeing how im short on cash n the excellence of the flys, and fairly cheaper costs... im gna have to say FLY ;D

Whoo first finess vote, honestly, I'm not sure about further splits though, I think it should remain general, but, the more information the better aswell, I could go either way.

For me Diabigs used to be the best, but I have to say that they don't compare to the Flys. In my opinion the Flys have so many advantages over most of the other diabolos available. If they did a version with rubber cups I think they'd be the head and shoulers (yes, I know they aren't human ;) ) above the rest.

Good idea but I'd rather make it just a half year

anyway I voted for finesse because I use them at the moment
it could probably change if I had some taibolo or some fly or decent circus kits

Finesse for the win.

wow. finesse with narrow axle is winning uberly. at this point at least. 14 vs 4 with the circus normal or 3 with the wide axle.

i guess this is because of the lighter taiwanese diabolos winning favor from the heavyweight circuses.

or maybe just because circus users are party animals that are still partying off new years.

Post by: Eric Moffett on January 01, 2008, 08:09:06 PM
Well, why not just make it general? If you use Finesses with a wide axle and weight kits then you would pick "Finesse" or if you use a Sun with Fly washers you would pick "Sun" etc.? Dunno, I guess I'm just over thinking it ;D ::)

I think Yohos are the best ones! :D

Of course, I voted for them!

I like my Finesse as well but I think Yohos are a bit nicer!

I haven't played with Flys yet but I think they'll become my favourite diabolos because you all really enjoy them so much! ;)

I'm not submitting a vote right now. I'm such a diabolo whore that I dont think I have a favourite.
I mainly use Taibolos and Suns, have strong affection for my circii though I havent used them for a bit. I use finesse g2's a lot at work and if I want to use light kits.
The one thing they all have in common is that I dont seem to like them as much stock as I do when I change them a bit. (lighter washers on suns, weight kits on finesse, pom hubs on circus etc etc.)

The interesting thing about this poll isn't who votes for what really though.

The interesting thing is the shift in popularity, Circuses aren't nearly as popular as they used to be and Flys are already the second favourite after being on the market for only half a year-ish.

I have quite a collection.  I really like my Flys and my Suns, and am still tempted to get some Taibolos, but I just voted for standard width Henrys.  I've been playing with those more than anything else lately, and there's just something so right about them.  Maybe it's a home comforts thing - it's always nice to go back.  I should probably sell my yohos though - they don't get any use any more.  They're still good, but are too heavy for my tastes.

That may have been my mistake, I'm not sure.  I started typing one, decided to change a bit, and found that somehow it had posted the first version in teh meantime.  The forum software seemed to go a bit bumpy at the same time too.  But yeah, you didn't imagine it - I posted before and after your post then removed the first one.

58 total votes out of 1970 (current as of this post) members is only 0.03% of the population. I think that it's a little presumptuous to say there are any changes in trends with only that amount of people voting. So, to say there are any shifts in trends will have to have a vote where more people actually take the time to check off their favorite diabolo.

In my opinion, Finesse are winning because if you don't like them stock. You can modify them to suit you..

More weight
Wider Axle
Hubstacks
Bearing
And they'll last longer than crocodiles or ****roaches.
Title: Re: Favourite Diabolo Poll 2008
Post by: Sean on January 03, 2008, 08:35:36 AM
In my opinion, Finesse are winning because...
You could say more or less the same thing for many of the other popular diabolos - just as much for circuses, mostly for flys (except the last longer part). The hubstacks are a bit different, but those are new and adaptations may be coming.

Granted, the add-ons for the finesse are marketed better than the rest.

Flys are the best! They aren't light or heavy, they move smoothly in close body movements and the bearing axle is supreme! Oh and the 1 minute finger grinds are immense!  But the cups get scratched up in seconds...

Finesse G3 is great too for its weight, invincabilty and general use.

I'll vote once I get Fly(s), I'd usually swear by my Finesse G3's, but I haven't tried anything comparable to them yet, just a Yoho fixed axle, a medium harlequin, a Babache... Millenium? and a Medium Radiant.

I own all of those  apart from the radiant, that's what my friend uses.

My finesses are starting to feel a bit sluggish now that I'm doing 2D, unreactive or overreactive to corrections and so on, so I gotta compare them to another diabolo of the same quality level (Circuses, Flys Suns Etc.)

Marketing?  :-\

Of all the newer diabolos they are by far the most widely available. Most people haven't tried all the diabolos. They've only been able to compare those diabolos that are available to them. I'd say Diabology has been good for MB. They come in pretty colours too!

Besides, they aren't bad diabolos... they have a unique precise feel to them. I don't think they are as good all round diabolos as some of the others, but I can see why some people really like them.

Having tried them all, I think the taibolos and suns/flys definitely excel in more areas than most others.

Yes, I also think that MB has made a perfect marketing,
the name of this marketing was Diabology,
it was a new Diabolo and additional a new dimension in playing the diabolo.

Hahahaha I'm the only one voted for the 4" option... I still use my 2 jazz diabolos every day! Even with those small diabolo's I do stuff like vertax genocides, sprinklers, slackwhips and fans. I know it's more easy with a bigger diabolo (I really like my fly too, haha) but I really like the fact they are so small it doesn't really bother me in my small bag.

btw, I also own a really really small diabolo (smaller than the henry's Micro) that doesn't even have an axle but is made out of one piece rubber or something... I can even do a lot of tricks with that one (yesterday I even did a successful whipcatch!)

So my point is... size doesn't matter :D

Seems more people like flys over suns.  Is that 'cos of the bearing axle?  What's the big hype over finesse other then all the mods?  Old school circus plays better.  AAAghhh!  I can't make up my mind.

Whatever diabolo i bought the most recently. Pretty sure this will be true for everyone too.

Using 2 circus's with ultra light kits and i couldnt imagine using anything else now. Finesse seem so pants in comparison.. No idea why its just my current feeling.

I love my flies but feel like its almost a different prop. So many things you can do with one and not the other. Also thier lack of durability on concrete is a huge drawback for me because i like to be able to stop anywhere and have a quick session if time allows. (always have my props on me at all times)

Harsh, but I kind of agree. There's at least 6 diabolos I'd use before a Finesse (sun, fly, circus, yoho diabig, harlequin, taibolo).

Is Taibolo the gap between finesse and circii?
With my lighter washers, the Taibolo is noticeably the lightest full sized diabolo on the market. Of course, this means it's not the most stable beast (leave that up to the lead filled default-washer-Sun :) ), but they are silky smooth, very responsive, fast to correct, and the only diabolos that don't hurt my wrists no matter how long I practice.

If they didn't murder my wrists, I'd be all over the fly-washer-Suns as my every day diabolo.

Lately I've been traveling with my ultra-light circuses so I can practice on pavement. I'm definitely also liking them, but my wrists do hurt after a while and they aren't as smooth or forgiving as my taibolos.

Well I don't get sore wrists even after using harlequins. I guess I'll get taibolos and suns and weight up the options. Or try and hybrid-ise them both.

You could wait around for the lighter Sun to come out, if it isn't already. That might be somewhere between a Sun and Taibolo. Everytime I hear harlequin now I think of wierd looking babies.

www.diabolomoves.co.uk (http://www.diabolomoves.co.uk)

Nev's store has all (?) of the Taiwanese diabolos in it, I think. That is, Sundia diabolos and Taibolos + their sticks etc. Definitely worth a look if you're in the UK or after the newest Taiwanese diabolos.

I'm a huge fan of Sundia's diabolos, that is Suns and Flys. I'll never again touch my finesses so long as my Suns are in reach, and Flys are Vertax killers.

The Taibolo store is not just in Taiwan, but halfway up a mountain in an alley in Taiwan. :-\

I like Flys. I like that extra weight, gives it a stabler feel.

Lolwut?

They aren't very heavy at all, in contrast to some other diabolos.

I just own 2 Circuses and 2 Finesses with Evo1 kits. I think they both are great, but i have tried some Suns, and they felt even better than those, so i voted for Suns. Propably buing a few some day soon.  :)

I only have 2 Circus for now (so that's how I voted) but I'm intrigued by the Finesse, I might have to have a go before I take the plunge and buy one, but they are obviously decent otherwise they wouldn't be so popular.

Time for a new 2009 poll, no?

Surely some people have found new favorites after expanding their collections this Christmas and over all last year.
