This is by far the best diabolo video ever made.
Congrats to everyone for the tricks and to Martijn for the editing.
So many stuff I absolutly loved I feel too lazy to pick out the time frames.

Norbi's and Arjan's sections stood out the most to me as their ideas seemed experimental and fresh. Its good to know there's still so much more out there.
The general standard of diabolists seems to have significantly raised, I better get to practicing...

A-w-e-s-o-m-e.

It was really quite something to see it all come together. What a team effort by all, and especially, what an effort by Martijn for his editing! It seems like a big job, and the reality is it's even bigger. The final result was out-of-this-world-good. Every year it never fails to disappoint, eh?

What did you say about "the year of integrals". There's more other techniques on the collab
video. Arjan does really smooth moves, also i loved the Duncan's, Martijn's and Sean's sections.
Don't mean to kiss moderators asses but they were actually good. Finally well edited video worth
of watching. Oh, forgot to mention Nick. He's awesome.

Now i know what i'll be watching the rest of the year. ;) Thanks a lot to everybody.

Thanks everyone!

Don't mean to kiss moderators asses but they were actually good.
Why thank you. :-*

Let me kiss one more moderator's ass: Seán (unless that's who you meant before, in which case I take back the kiss). His arm grind stuff, and especially that 2d antisun to arm-grind-bounce-thing (twice!) (13:26) deserves a serious WTF, in the truest sense of the web 2.0 way.

and Susannah's 2d arm orbit stuff... and the intro!... and Nev's crazy 2d thing... and William's classy tricks and diabolo-beer-opening... and Busk's diabolo pounding... and the Sharpe's insane passing... and Johnny's crazy 2d sequence... and Ceri-Anne's string stick stuff... and Quentin's multidimensional suicide/integral thing... and Nick's string goodness... and Marko's awesome old-school style stuff and 4 points vertax... and the Australian guys' 3 person rocket start... and ... and the list goes on...

FEED-THE-SWAN!

Participants, thanks for your clips! I enjoyed each single second!

Watching it over and over again! Inspiring!
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration video 2008: "Work in progress"
Post by: Pete on November 17, 2008, 07:47:44 PM
Had to watch it at least twice before I could even begin to comment. Tried to pick out a single favourite part, but I just couldn't because there were so many. I really liked the way the background in Martijn's clips linked in with the Work in Progress theme, good thinking. Interesting to see the different themes we run on and how much crossover there is in styles and tricks. Once again I was surprised at how impressive Susannah's 2d orbits are, its great to see something interesting done form something I originally thought was a dead end. And to follow on from what a few others said, Johnny's trick was genius I thought.

An extremely welcome bit of inspiration. Well worth the wait. Thanks to everyone who took part, and well done to Tijn for editing. Magnificent.

Nice work Martijn. It was worth waiting for.
The music is well chosen.

Enjoyed all of it.

I was very impresed when I saw Johnnys 2d elevator/grind/fan-combo
other entries that lifted my eyebrows were Susannahs 2nd combo and Quentins 1d combo. Arjans "pointing with a diabolo on the hand" (just got myself a pair of white sunglasses, but can't do it yet wtf)
William (fr), smooth 2diab ^_^
@ Duncan was that feed the swan 0-1 or 1-2 ??
Etienne, cool fan stuff from btb
Domi, supersweet bounces
@ Seán - Giant WTF^^
@the aussies, sweet 4d rocket
Norbi, ShoulderBounce of niceness
@Jacob's left foot, get well

Where did all the germans go??!

@Ben. Thx for noticing.

Well, I e-mailed I was thinking about adding in one of those clips, I never promised anything! In the end it didn't fit with the theme and the editing, so I decided to leave it out. I understand it's disappointing to discover your clip didn't make it to the video, but you knew that could happen beforehand. Sorry about that.

My thought. I requested some people personally (by a group e-mail...) for a contribution. If I remember correctly, I send the e-mail to all 4 of them, but I got no reply unfortunately. Ah heck, who needs 'em!

One question: Who the hell has got so many Diabolo cups to form Diabolo.ca with it in the grass?

Who else can it be than Nev, the sole UK importer for Eastern diabolos ;) I guess he just has them laying around in his garden, having nowhere else to put them :-D

Haha, I am a bit dissapointed in myself for not being able to keep up with all this new awesomeness. :P Seems my teaching of diabolo is getting in the way of my innovating.

To be honest, I don't know :P I used QuickTime's iPod and iPhone presets. It says the iPod version is 600x480 and the iPhone version is 450x360 (both encoded with H.264/AAC). I'm not sure what the framerate is or if it works :D I'll synch it with my iPod tomorrow. If anyone wants to try it out for me, that'd be great.

I just tested out the iPhone and iPod versions. Both work on an iPhone/iPod touch screen, but the higher resolution iPod version looks better, so I've removed the link to the iPhone version.

The specs are:
Duration: 0:13:26
Data Size: 156.46 MB
Bit Rate: 1.63 Mbps

Video Tracks:
H.264, 600 × 480, 30 fps, 1.50 Mbps

Audio Tracks:
MPEG-4 Audio stereo, 44.1 kHz, 129 kbps

The iPod version works fine on my iPod Touch. I see no reason why it should not work on an iPhone.

It is in a M4V wrapper, with codecs as Sean wrote. If it helps with compatibility for other devices, you can always open it in MPEG Streamclip, and "Save As..." MP4.

well done to ALL the .ca folks (not just those in the video) for helping to push diabolo even further into the unexplored.

however good the skills were, the simple things still amuse me most - busk, void, bottletops & ducks take some topping.

So hard to pick any favorites from mix like this! Just watched it once and Arjan, Johnny, Quentin and Susannah.. lots of new things to try out :) Sharpes 5d low passing was neat (7d passing isnt that bad either)..

What a huge diabolo skill cake glaced with innovation  ;). A lot of cool 1D ideas to explore, and really awesome passing patterns. Outstanding work on editing and choosing the music.

Overall, I think it's the best D.ca collab yet!

Jonny, are you the magnificent spawn of a BMC/Nev one off because that sir was very very smooth.

Yay for funty's 3d web, yay for hathaways exquisite string figure, yay for crackers getting drunk, yay to all of it really.

I will jump on the bandwagon next year, looks most fun.

It was amazing! Some of the integrals were amazing! And the combos were just incredible!
I think mabe though it would be more a "collaborations" video if you had less of the same person and more differnet people. Dont ya think?

How would less clips by the same amount of people be more collaborative? Clips from more different diaboloists would be more collabrative.

Well said Tijn. Peoples clips that fitted the theme/were good enough got in... So Tijn clearly tried to use as much as possible, but at the end of the day you still want it to be an amazing video. Plus it couldn't have been much more 'colabrative' really, theres quite a large list of people in it. Dont ya think?

i still think that certain people could have had less clips in leaving more time for other who didn't get in. i mean some people whose clips appeared multiple times didn't have that amazing tricks.

I agree with allsoppy5, Ben and Martijn

After thinking about it. So some people get multiple "relative long" entries while others get a single trick. I suppose it is because they sent more.

I can imagine that is is hard for Martijn to throw tricks out. However I think that the video will seem more balanced, with even more rotation of the artists.

Superfluous tricks for votws?

I am supposing that more people will join next year --> longer video

If people disagree, please pm as I don't want to ruin this thread

We allowed multiple clips from the beginning on and have been doing that for the last 3 years. I haven't heard anyone complain about that until now, so maybe this should've been brought up beforehand and not now, when all the work's done.

If you want your 10 seconds of fame, upload your video to YouTube and you can have 10 minutes of fame! This project, to me, is about making a great video with submissions from different d.ca members and you have no idea how hard it just is to deal with so many different clips :-D If our goal was to please everyone, I doubt we'd have such a stunning video every year. It makes sense to have a selection procedure. I was working with an "Accepted", "Rejected" (technically, I wasn't working with that folder) and "Maybe" folder with clips, so yes: some of the clips in the Maybe folder made it and some didn't!

This all's just nitpicking though - have a look at the explosion of love: 6 pages of positive posts within a day!

Wow This is truly Diabolo.ca's best annual event. I look forward to it every year. I must say this year was the best ever. I really enjoyed every trick I saw in there, as well as seeing some new faces in the mix. Martijn did an awesome job with the editing as always, well worth the wait.

Highlights for those who care:
4low, 7d passing, 5 (low) passing (Don't tell me Jacob hurt his foot again)
2d fan combos
Cracker's sick skills
Funty's awesome use of loops
nev sick duicide thing

Hehe, unfortunately I had no one available to hold the camera, and I don't have a tripod,  so the only place I can get a half decent angle is using the fence posts round the tennis court. Admittedly I've only ever used the same one...  Plus tennis courts are a great space to practice in if you're garden is too small/muddy/overgrown.

Thank you to those who made/participated in it and are nice enough to share their great tricks. Totally kicking myself for not being one of them :'(. Now off to buy a videocamera and start practicing for next time...

Oh and creativity really proved to be a good theme, the tricks in there are pure inspiration for inventing new stuff.

That was brilliant. Awesome 2d stuff in there, I really enjoyed those sick knot stealing, all messy string combos. All of them (Johnny, Etienne, ...).

Great to see some progress, as well as innovations in 1d. Integrals are getting insane, I can hardly tell what's going on sometimes (watch Pete ;))

Sry for not answering your e-mail, Martijn, I just can't do any of the tricks I invented, they'd need some serious practising I don't have time for at the moment. I prefer watching you guys, anyway 8)

I had a couple of problems when I tried downloading, I usually do as my computer is a bit slow. I tried the juggletv version first and got a couple of minutes of video and then it "finished" like you described. Try the circusplanet version, I don't know what the difference is, or even if there is one, but it worked first time for me.

yitavd, Olive:
It's exactly the same file on JTV, DCA & circusplanet. Something is going wrong during your download - possibly a glitch in your internet connection is terminating the file mid-way. Solution: get a download manager program. iGetter (http://www.igetter.net/) has a free version.

So I come home from teaching two days ago, and I find Lisa at the computer watching a diabolo video.  This fact alone causes me to pause and wonder, "Why is she doing that?"  I ask her and she replies, "I'm waiting to see you..."  I look at title and see that it's the 2008 Collaboration Video.  So I tell her, "Honey, I'm not in that video.  I didn't send anything in.  I don't have anything worth sharing..."  Imagine my surprise when I see myself on the screen.

I TOTALLY forgot that Duncan was sitting there filming while I tried to get that trick at EJC.  And for the record, all credit should go to Yufi from Czech.  It was his trick and he taught it to me the night before with a broken hand no less.  Thank you Yufi!!!

Speaking of thank you's, Martjin deserves a big one of course. I really appreciate the time and trouble you take to create these videos.  Next time we meet, the beer's on me.

Thanks for your words man! And for the record, I did ask you if I could use that trick (which was submitted as a VotW at the time... by Duncan I guess) for the collab instead. All's good! But... isn't it Yufi's trick backwards?

Because no one has done it yet, I believe this video deserves a trick by trick review. Times may not be completely accurate, but hopefully you'll smile a bit.

0:00 – 0:15 – Martijn had to drop the hint: “c’mon, who do you think has that many crystal suns?” I still didn’t guess right. Fail.
0:21 – 0:26 – Tease.
0:27 – 0:39 – Few tricks make me giggle as madly as I did at this one.
0:40 – 0:45 – My shoulders would snap trying to do that.
0:46 – 0:50 – Clip from my camera actually!
0:51 – 0:55 – Me pretending a multiplex is possible in diabolo.
0:56 – 1:04 – First reaction: “Jacob loves to bust his right leg.”
1:05 – 1:19 – Nick generally being awesome. As usual.
1:20 – 1:24 – Is there a bald patch on your arm now from all that grinding?
1:25 – 1:32 – What’s with the shades indoors?
1:33 – 1:42 – Old-school IS the New-school.
1:43 – 1:54 – Spinny.
1:55 – 2:06 – Love the squeeze catch.
2:07 – 2:17 – Now that’s magic.
2:18 – 2:20 – Was this the year people decide contact diabolo would be more fun if burns were included?
2:21 – 2:32 – Foresty. And I have no idea how that trick worked.
2:33 – 2:45 – What IS that thing you’re standing in front of?!
2:46 – 2:55 – Level 9 trick.
2:56 – 3:04 – Some goof.
3:05 – 3:10 – Haven’t I seen you do that somewhere before...?
3:11 – 3:17 – Nate on the unfamiliar side of passing.
3:18 – 3:23 – Another clip from my camera. And Aaro with too few clothes on.
3:24 – 3:36 – Susannah-madness. Now with Herr Flick!
3:38 – 3:41 – The penguin approves.
3:42 – 3:53 – Now try it with vertax!
3:54 – 3:59 – What happened to that poor diabolo in the lower right?
4:00 – 4:07 – Three dee-y
4:08 – 4:15 – You need to do some raking.
4:16 – 4:20 – Nice flourish.
4:21 – 4:33 – Diabolo during laundry time.
4:34 – 4:36 – Diamond eyes!
4:37 – 4:54 – That is so awesome.
4:55 – 5:06 – This was almost a Video of the Week.
5:07 – 5:13 – Wobbly.
5:14 – 5:20 – Feed the Swan! And that other swan refused the diabolo-tray offering.
5:21 – 5:32 – Headless and the Wanderer.
5:33 – 5:50 – Stop smiling so much when you diabolo... wait...
5:51 – 5:59 – Fancy footwork. Keep it up!
6:00 – 6:01 – The New Gunslinger.
6:02 – 6:08 – More magic.
6:09 – 6:14 – Bouncy bouncy bouncy.
6:15 – 6:18 – Isn’t it kinda warm for a winter hat?
6:19 – 6:25 – Hey, even I can do tha... oh, maybe not.
6:26 – 6:31 – Thrown away in disgust.
6:32 – 6:35 – Faker.
6:36 – 6:44 – You kind of look like a nose standing there.
6:45 – 6:52 – Grindy.
6:53 – 7:07 – Mmmm, triangles.
7:08 – 7:19 – Now that’s some proper rope-diabolo.
7:22 – 7:45 – Great stick work.
7:46 – 7:53 – Impressive. But can you do that weird thing where it climbs up the string?
7:54 – 7:59 – Arm grind with whip catch? Now we’re talking.
8:00 – 8:07 – Playing footsie.
8:08 – 8:18 – Diabolo – more fun when you don’t need that second stick.
8:19 – 8:30 – You missed.
8:31 – 8:39 – People on the walkway: “Get a job.”
8:40 – 8:46 – “Oh shi... just like I planned.”
8:47 – 8:59 – I have no earthly idea how that move around your right arm works. Awesome.
9:00 – 9:07 – Stalls galore. And good ones too.
9:08 – 9:17 – Take 26. Shaky hand included (sorry about that).
9:19 – 9:34 – Infinite whirling dervish!
9:38 – 9:48 – Alien-eye shades. Good old school catches too.
9:49 – 9:58 – Anti-spin! It’s the new frontier.
9:59 – 10:04 – Duicideyintegralgenocidey... bah. It’s spinny, okay?
10:05 – 10:07 – Flouncy.
10:08 – 10:17 – Why am I dangerous?
10:18 -10:24 – Cross-plane madness.
10:25 – 10:36 - *Pick jaw off floor*
10:37 – 10:56 – Only slightly pleased with the accomplishment.
10:57 – 11:11 – It’s Nev, so of course it’s going to be insane.
11:12 – 11:15 – Now that’s a contact move.
11:16 – 11:24 – Making the difficult look easy.
11:25 – 11:34 – Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do stuff with both sticks in your hands.
11:35 – 11:46 – Anti-sun! Wait. Does that make it a moon?
11:47 – 11:51 – Good thing you caught it – you might’ve lost it under that mess.
11:52 – 11:53 – Now all the way to your other hand.
11:54 – 11:55 – Good thing you have a short nose. Or a long hat. Whichever.
11:56 – 11:57 – What the hell is that girl doing behind me?
11:58 – 12:08 – Switch-stick anti-suicide. Very cool.
12:09 – 12:20 – Kids and their integrals.
12:21 – 12:32 – Diabolo with less shuffling.
12:33 – 12:39 – Epic start.
12:40 – 12:50 – Negative-space!
12:51 – 13:02 – Martijn’s impression of Solid Snake.
13:03 – 13:08 – Awesome start.
13:09 – 13:16 – Now you just have to do a reverse spin with the other one.
13:17 – 13:19 – Flashes of greatness.
13:20 – 13:26 – Good s**t.

Great idea Duncan. I stole your time codes and added my own commentary. At first I tried identifying clips, but that got tiring and took away from the fun...

0:00 – 0:15 – I asked for the photo right away. Wow.
0:21 – 0:26 – Love the fast cuts.
0:27 – 0:39 – Void - I peeked at this one when it was submitted. Makes me giggle too.
0:40 – 0:45 – I have pulled some muscles learning this one.
0:46 – 0:50 – You, sir, are insane.
0:51 – 0:55 – Duncan - Love the multiplex start.
0:56 – 1:04 – First reaction: “Jacob loves to bust his LEFT leg.” Second reaction: "Duncan needs to learn his rights and lefts. :)"
1:05 – 1:19 – Nick - Best at what he does. Goes over my head as usual...
1:20 – 1:24 – There goes the arm hair!
1:25 – 1:32 – Great to see Norbi again. All cool people wear sunglasses indoors. Is it dark in here?
1:33 – 1:42 – Marko. Doing Finland and old-school proud. In an earlier cut I saw the finish to this clip. It's awesome too.
1:43 – 1:54 – Oh yeah - Diabolo.ca shirts... taking over the world.
1:55 – 2:06 – When I first saw these, I barely recognized Arjan. I know a great barber...
2:07 – 2:17 – Me - Took about 30 minutes of takes of that... and chose the first one. Go figure.
2:18 – 2:20 – Norbi - Don't lose the glasses! It's like cool to librarian in one step.
2:21 – 2:32 – Jem - Same thoughts as Duncan. What-jus-happened?
2:33 – 2:45 – Jordon - I've had lots of comments about the structure in the background. Trick is sweet too.
2:46 – 2:55 – Cloud 9... err level 9.
2:56 – 3:04 – Duncan has perfected the pause-and-look-silly-for-the-camera look. Kudos.
3:05 – 3:10 – Deja vu. Still wicked.
3:11 – 3:17 – The brothers - That's a lot of diabolos in a small space.
3:18 – 3:23 – Aaro. Love it. Now stick your neck in too. Then we're talking.
3:24 – 3:36 – Susannah - around the arms to a whole new level.
3:38 – 3:41 – Genius.
3:42 – 3:53 – B-Boy HeatFlair!? What a name.
3:54 – 3:59 – Dixie - Wow. Duncan's right. Diabolo killer.
4:00 – 4:07 – Matt - Um, sticks and string are coming out of everywhere. Yikes.
4:08 – 4:15 – The new king of smooth. Knee deep in leaves.
4:16 – 4:20 – Tijn - I've tried this... harder than it looks.
4:21 – 4:33 – Daniel (with 2 dots). Loving the filming cuts/angles.
4:34 – 4:36 – Duncan - Those eyes are spooky.
4:37 – 4:54 – Damn. It amazes me how the diabolos stay perfectly straight throughout. And it just keeps going, and going...
4:55 – 5:06 – Yeap - almost a VotW... without the siren light. That just pushed it to a new level. Apple juice. Ha!
5:07 – 5:13 – Tijn on metal. I've lost track. How many laws were broken in this film? Tr'espace-ing? Check.
5:14 – 5:20 – So close. 1-2 feed the swan next year.
5:21 – 5:32 – Are those pigtails?
5:33 – 5:50 – It's official. Pete lives on a tennis court. Let's start a fund to get Pete a home. If not that - a tripod.
5:51 – 5:59 – Benny - Yeap - it's all in the feet.
6:00 – 6:01 – Bang.
6:02 – 6:08 – Jakob Face makes it look painful.
6:09 – 6:14 – I'm not sure the gangs of school kids watching knew what was going on.
6:15 – 6:18 – Oh - it's a hat.
6:19 – 6:25 – Yikes.
6:26 – 6:31 – There's that sculpture again. What is it?
6:32 – 6:35 – Oh he's going to start now. Oh. He's going to start now. Oh. He's going to start now. Oh.
6:36 – 6:44 – Nose? Yeap. Hey Lois - I'm a booger. hehe (anyone get that?)
6:45 – 6:52 – Tijn - grrrrrrind.
6:53 – 7:07 – Ceri-Anne. Developing a whole new aspect of diabolo. Satisfied head bob? Check.
7:08 – 7:19 – Matt - Damn - There's string and loops everywhere.
7:22 – 7:45 – Ultra cool. Of course, I can do that too... but only when wearing those shades. Hey - it's still dark in here. Did I mention I love this remix?
7:46 – 7:53 – Meh. You wanna-be amateurs should learn to do something hard. ;)
7:54 – 7:59 – Slick
8:00 – 8:07 – Yay fish eye.
8:08 – 8:18 – Yeap - who needs both sticks anyways?
8:19 – 8:30 – Ha - woops.
8:31 – 8:39 – I still need to learn this counter clockwise.
8:40 – 8:46 – Switzerland has the best wooden bridges.
8:47 – 8:59 – Susannah - This blows my mind. How. Just how?
9:00 – 9:07 – Doing Hungary proud. Great old school stalls. I remember reading about some of those in Donald's books but never nailing them.
9:08 – 9:17 – "Use that for video of the week!" Oh wait... Come on. Every collab video needs Matt.
9:19 – 9:34 – Twice the speed. Just as lame. Far too many takes.
9:38 – 9:48 – Sweet evil laugh.
9:49 – 9:58 – Wow, but... that's... backwards!?
9:59 – 10:04 – Wow, the hat can diabolo!
10:05 – 10:07 – Martijn's been taking ballet.
10:08 – 10:17 – I don't know Duncan, why are you dangerous? Is it the deranged-like stare at the camera? The gang grafiti behind you? Or the assassin like precision of your neck catch?
10:18 – 10:24 – Good god. There are that many dimensions?
10:25 – 10:36 - Really Pete. We can get you help.
10:37 – 10:56 – Domi - Love the colours in this shot. That's joy for you. Love the top shot.
10:57 – 11:11 – Nev - Um. That's not supposed to be possible.
11:12 – 11:15 – There goes the hair on the other arm
11:16 – 11:24 – Apples anyone? Or did I get the fruit wrong?
11:25 – 11:34 – You're right. Touching both sticks is evil. I think there's an earpiece too. Receiving messages from the devil I'm sure.
11:35 – 11:46 – What the hell!? Great synching to the music too.
11:47 – 11:51 – Priceless comment by Duncan. I can add nothing.
11:52 – 11:53 – Ask Tijn to refilm it clean. I dare you.
11:58 – 12:08 – Hey - the sticks do switch. Cool.
12:09 – 12:20 – Wow, and he does it without cool shades!
12:21 – 12:32 – Oh there are the shades.
12:33 – 12:39 – Damn. Now that's a rocket start.
12:40 – 12:50 – More tongue please.
12:51 – 13:02 – Tr'espace-ing part deux.
13:03 – 13:08 – Slick start.
13:09 – 13:16 – You're disturbing the man reading a book in the background.
13:17 – 13:19 – Flash. Flash. Flash. Apple juice!
13:20 – 13:25 – My monitor is going in and out. I'll just slap it.
13:26 - 13:26 - Argh. Now I can't show my grandmother.

Poof - there goes the magic. My dreams are crushed. Genius move though.

Oh, I don't fault you at all. Writing one of those things up (especially not ripping off someone else's time codes) is one monumental task. I very much enjoyed reading it while watching the video. I was going to just comment on the left-right thing, but felt it would be a cowardly move if I didn't go through the exercise myself too. ;)

Next year we release moderator dubbed versions. More fun and less typing. Duncan and I will be the two old guys from the muppets (Statler and Waldorf). :)

And the director's commentary:

0:00 – 0:15 – Just so you know who we are. The leaf is a brilliant touch.
0:21 – 0:26 – Just so you know what's coming your way – quality.
0:27 – 0:39 – British humour at it's best. Music couldn't fit better with the edit. As soon as I got the intro done, I was convinced by the succes of the video.
0:40 – 0:45 – That is HARD.
0:46 – 0:50 – Beautiful, looks even better in real life. I also received a transition from high cascade to low cascade, but had to leave it out.
0:51 – 0:55 – Great trick. However, the dog seems to care more about his tennisball.
0:56 – 1:04 – After watching this clip approximately 79 times during the editing, I only noticed that his left leg was i plaster the 74th time. I must've been focussed blind on the pattern!
1:05 – 1:19 – Nick never failing to disappoint. Unfortunately, I had to leave out his 2nd submission, due to bad-angle-filming.
1:20 – 1:24 – Bah. You told me that's Nev's. You cheeky bugger!
1:25 – 1:32 – Meant to be used for promotional cause, as Norbi was loving his brand new diabs. Hereby, I'd like to give a shout-out to Nev's www.diabolomoves.co.uk (http://www.diabolomoves.co.uk)
1:33 – 1:42 – Proof-of-concept that indoor living room filming can be cool. As long as you have Finnish design-interior with coca-cola can accessories that is.
1:43 – 1:54 – Not breaking the law. yet. One of my W.I.P. tricks; that exit is rather lame.
1:55 – 2:06 – Meh. Doing that trick while standing on top of that structure in the middle of the lake. Now that would impress me.
2:07 – 2:17 – I have shown and learned a handful of people that trick long before the release – it just is that cool.
2:18 – 2:20 – Cross-over show-off.
2:21 – 2:32 – Jem doin' his thang. You gotta love his devotion to everything slightly slacky.
2:33 – 2:45 – That obviously is a well received piece of contemporary Italian art. Or a climbing apparatus for the local kids.
2:46 – 2:55 – What a slacker.
2:56 – 3:04 – Would you believe me if I told you I placed this silly clip as an anchor onto the track, just so I could synch your silliness to the music properly?
3:05 – 3:10 – Kicking it up a notch.
3:11 – 3:17 – Still blind to Jacob's left leg.
3:18 – 3:23 – You should have seen his dedicated face while he was doing speed orbits around his leg – very creepy.
3:24 – 3:36 – Susannah. I rest my case.
3:38 – 3:41 – Don't be fooled by it's innocent look – that is one bad-ass penguin. Why else would Busk smack him into the floor after the cut?
3:42 – 3:53 – Now put a pair of sticks in B-Boy HeatFlair's hands and see what happens.
3:54 – 3:59 – Another eiffel tower.
4:00 – 4:07 – The most amazing figure (the last one) was cut off way too early in the submission, so I had to speed up the first bit to balance it out :P
4:08 – 4:15 – I read somewhere the deadline for submitting clips was August 31st?
4:16 – 4:20 – The only awesome background in Tiel.
4:21 – 4:33 – About that ë: the typewriter font I used didn't come with special characters, so I had to place some dots on top manually (dito with Seán).
4:34 – 4:36 – What the hell just happened?
4:37 – 4:54 – Wicked combination.
4:55 – 5:06 – The wireless modem (or is it a time machine?) and police light complement the composition perfectly.
5:07 – 5:13 – I almost fell like, really hard!
5:14 – 5:20 – Feed the swan! Nice shot for both non-jugglers and diabolo-geeks.
5:21 – 5:32 – Shhhooooooopsssss...
5:33 – 5:50 – Only slightly amazing.
5:51 – 5:59 – The feet made me put it in – inspiring!
6:00 – 6:01 – Fluke. Then we managed to get it on film :)
6:02 – 6:08 – EJC goodness – great slack.
6:09 – 6:14 – I love editing.
6:15 – 6:18 – Thumb-slack. No more, no less.
6:19 – 6:25 – Etienne rocks.
6:26 – 6:31 – I'd have done the same.
6:32 – 6:35 – Maybe an "I fake my diabolo starts" t-shirt can replace your lost "I fake my orgasms" t-shirt?
6:36 – 6:44 – Loving the nose comment. Thanks for pointing that out Duncan. He looks ridiculous standing there like that.
6:45 – 6:52 – Back to skool.
6:53 – 7:07 – Waffle!
7:08 – 7:19 – Swingin' that yo-yo like a mad-man.
7:22 – 7:45 – Arjan represents Coldplay. Awesome remix.
7:46 – 7:53 – I heard they were passing 8 at EJC.
7:54 – 7:59 – "I caught it, now what?"
8:00 – 8:07 – Marko's distinct style can't be beaten.
8:08 – 8:18 – Very inspiring W.I.P.
8:19 – 8:30 – After the first 180, just see what works for you to make the full turn.
8:31 – 8:39 – So where do you live? Switzerland, France, make a choice!
8:40 – 8:46 – Tutut.
8:47 – 8:59 – Your wrists must feel like rubber.
9:00 – 9:07 – Funky stall bounces.
9:08 – 9:17 – Unstoppable at EJC.
9:19 – 9:34 – That whale looks rather pleased with himself.
9:38 – 9:48 – Improv exit. He seems to be happy with it.
9:49 – 9:58 – Seán, is that the Butterfingers warehouse? Either way, the proud look on your face is priceless.
9:59 – 10:04 – The amount of effort is directly proportional with the amount of tongue.
10:05 – 10:07 – I filmed 2 silly poses. One of them just had to get in.
10:08 – 10:17 – I think it's the beard.
10:18 – 10:24 – Awesome concept. Youngsters: go explore! (oh and that's Crackers', you thief!)
10:25 – 10:36 – Wait – what just happened?
10:37 – 10:56 – True satisfaction.
10:57 – 11:11 – "These are bearings, I might as well use them."
11:12 – 11:15 – Did you ever nail that?
11:16 – 11:24 – Following Busk' footsteps.
11:25 – 11:34 – Nice position.
11:35 – 11:46 – So, what is this? And where's that face the 2nd time around? Looks like great acting if you ask me.
11:47 – 11:51 – Funk'tegral.
11:52 – 11:53 – You can see my head going down in disbelief the last frame ;D Only time I ever hit it. And it was ugly as hell.
11:54 – 11:55 – Excellent use of 3rd party props.
11:56 – 11:57 – What is that girl doing behind you?
11:58 – 12:08 – That start is hot! Shame the set-up isn't very visible, because I had to cut off the fade crossover transition.
12:09 – 12:20 – What the hell are you doing. I can't see it. It's filmed from too far away. Jerk.
12:21 – 12:32 – Norbi's swagger bursts through your screen.
12:33 – 12:39 – This should be called the spaceshuttle start.
12:40 – 12:50 – I feel bad for cutting of the mini g stick catch. Ah well – suck it up.
12:51 – 13:02 – "This is real sh*t."
                        -"It's good sh*t, right?"
                      "I mean, bad sh*t."
-"Bad sh*t like the sh*t is baaaad?"
                      "It's sh*t-sh*t. This sh*t isn't worth sh*t."
13:03 – 13:08 – Careless start, like only Crackers can pull off.
13:09 – 13:16 – Did anyone see that the first time? Crackers was amazed that I noticed the stick spin right away.
13:17 – 13:19 – Diabologasm.
13:19 – 13:19 – Climax.

OK. Let's get a little more professional about this. I turned Duncan's, Martijn's, and my comments into subtitle files (attached to this post). Here's how to play them in VLC:
Edit - or see Jesse's post (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=5744.msg69495#msg69495) in Windows or Nev's post (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=5744.msg69517#msg69517) for another simple option.
1. File --> "Open File"
2. Browse for the diabolo.ca collaboration video
3. Check the "Load subtitles file" box.
4. Click on "Settings"
5. Browse for the .srt file you want to play
(http://diabolo.ca/images/forum/vlcsubs2.png)
6. Hit OK a couple times and enjoy!

Voila, now you can watch the video with whoever's comments you'd like:

Anyone else want to add their commentary? ;) Just fill out the text file I attached (dcacollab08_commentary.txt), send it to me, and I'll convert it.

If anyone's interested in the Perl script I wrote to turn the above comments into .srt files, let me know. It's not hard.

Sean that's fantastic!

But there's actually an easier way to play the .srt files. VLC allows you to simply drag them on the screen.

Well, that certainly sounds simple; however, it doesn't seem to do anything in OS X. Maybe that's only on the Windows VLC?

Come on. More subtitles. :)

Loving those subtitles.

Windows VLC will auto-detect the subtitles - just put them in the same folder as the video and let VLC so the rest. - just play the vid & select "subtitles track" from the video menu - (disable, track 1, track 2, track 3 etc) - lets you switch between titles during playback.

A lot of takes to get the underwhip right :D

Brilliant idea with comments as subtitles :D

2:33 – 2:45 – What IS that thing you're standing in front of?!
2:33 – 2:45 – Jordan - I've had lots of comments about the structure in the background.

Ha ha, that was really my intention to get you wondering in front of what I was standing. I'm glad it worked.

And the answer is :

Quote from: Matrijn
2:33 – 2:45 – That obviously is a well received piece of contemporary Italian art. Or a climbing apparatus for the local kids.

Martijn is right, it's a piece of art, but in the same moment it has also a functional use (for example there are also some park bench).

@busk: I'm from Italy, like you, and live in Bolzano. Some people has met me before, but especially German people, because my first language is German (second is Italian). For Example I was at the EJC, maybe you have seen me there, even if you don't remember ;). But I don't juggle that long and haven't been on many big festivals (actually EJC was my first), therefore maybe we meet some day.

And about my clothes, I like unicolourd clothes and be sure, you are not the first one to call me smurf  :-D.

And I will! If you're talking about different diaboloists, it's just you and Ceri-Anne. If you're talking about locations... sure, you can count 3 :P

I have no idea what Marijn and Martijn are talking about, but since they've bumped this post up I'll take it as my opportunity to say:

I was really floored by the creative things people are doing. Ceri-Anne, for example, seems to be sinking three-pointers from a corner of the court that nobody else ever touches. But I shouldn't single anyone out because it was amazing skill level and ingenuity all around.

CRAZY!!!

Arjans, Seans (the one with the hand grinds), Duncans, and everyone else. This was far the best diabolo video in the world. What does somebody need to do to get in this kind of a video?!

you just need something creative to do
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration video 2008: "Work in progress"
Post by: martijn on January 31, 2009, 03:20:40 PM
you need something original or hard but a lot of experience
That doesn't really cut it.

Have a look at the webpage Sean set up for last year's submitting (it's still online): www.diabolo.ca/collab (http://www.diabolo.ca/collab)

Anyone can enter. As long as you pay attention to the guidelines we set up, you're likely to get featured in the final edit. Watch out for next year's project, it will probably start somewhere in summer, like Sean posted.

^ you don't need experience or hard tricks at all - just something creative.  Could be a really simple trick that no-one else has thought to do yet. - the wrist/arm grinds are a good example.  ::)
