Title: Favourite Diabolo Poll 2009
Post by: Sean on January 01, 2009, 11:30:03 PM
For the last 3 years we have been running a poll on people's favourite diabolos. As new diabolos get introduced each year, it will be interesting to be able to track how preferences change over time.

Vote for your favourite diabolo, and if you wish, add a short message about why you prefer that diabolo.

You have 1 vote and won't be able to see the running total until you vote; however, you will be able to change your vote up until this poll closes on December 31st 2009.

Finesse with a normal axle cos they're just better than all the others. :p

P.S. The voting options don't account for the different versions of the finesse, G1, G2, G3. Possibly not worth changing, but thought i'd mention it, some people might have a preference.

I'll have to go with all around circus although I've been playing a lot with my finesses recently. Anyways when I practise I just keep all my diabs on the floor and pick the first one that comes, but each time I need to carry some diabs I'll most likely go with the circus's since they're the more versatile.
The only thing I don't like about them really, is that they are by far the uggliest diabs I own  :(

Had there been an option for a wide axle fly in fixed mode, it had my vote but the original sun will have to make do.  The only difference I've ever noticed is sprinkler suns lasting longer with fixed flys but that's being picky.  Both top quality props.

The voting options don't account for the different versions of the finesse, G1, G2, G3
We discussed this years ago when the G2 came out. The same goes for the Taibolo. Basically we decided that since the newest version was inherently "better" there was no need to distinguish. Further, people who vote for the older generations are most likely to have never had the opportunity to try the newer generations. And further again, the differences between the diabolo brands is far greater than any generational change.

Had there been an option for a wide axle fly in fixed mode, it had my vote but the original sun will have to make do.
That's exactly what "Sundia Fly (Wide axle)" means - fixed and bearing. You'll notice I didn't distinguish between bearing/fixed for any of the diabolos. I wanted this to be a poll about diabolo shape and performance, not a poll about bearing/non-bearing. I'll add that to the poll options to clarify.

Vote for Finnesse!

nothing more to say, I totally agree with pranay! ;)
none of the other diabolos has such sexy colours and curves! :-D

btw...it's quite difficult to choose for me:
YoHoS, my Allround Circi and my Taibolos are very nice as well......
but Crackers is right, circi are kinda ugly....... ::)

I've tried several diabolos, unmodded circi, circi with jc's hubs, flys, suns,
However, my favourite is unmodded finesse, because there's not a lot of technology into it, but it works fine and is indestructible

Please could you be happy with the 19 choices that are already there? Sun with plastic and metal washers can go in the same category for now. Notice that I didn't split up the Circuses with different washers either. Nor the Taibolos or Diabigs both of which I prefer with lighter washers. Further, the poll has already started, I can't go changing categories now.

I see you work a lot on this forum, and thank you for that, but for me, a circus with an aluminium axis and a circus with teflon cups and washers are totally different.

I didn't vote for this reason...  :-|

Sundia Suns with plastic washers are the way to go for me.

For me it's a little like this: Finesse < Taibolo < Fixed Fly < Circus (teflon hubs) < Suns (plastic washers)

EDIT: added Taibolo's. Smooth, but too light for me, I prefer diabolo's that weigh around 275 grams

Look, there's a reason for that too. Here I'll dig up the original post I made explaining this in 2005:

Yes, because the G2s are obviously an improvement over the G1. I can't see any valid or educated reason why someone who has tried both G1s and G2s would prefer G1s over G2s and hence it is redundant to include and would not provide any useful information.

We're not asking for what diabolo do you use but what diabolo do you think is the best overall. If you only like G2s, that's great, it's the finesse of the present and future and your vote counts. If someone likes G1s that person will like G2s even more and their vote would remain with finesse.

This is similar reasoning to why I chose not to include the original circus metal hubs as a separate category vs. the improved teflon hubs.
i.e. I didn't include a separate category for the metal hubs because anybody who has tried both the metal and teflon hubs would prefer the teflon hubs. So, there's no need to include a separate category. We'd only be finding out who hasn't bothered to upgrade to teflon hubs or who hasn't had the opportunity to try both. Can we just get on with voting and discussing?

--

For me it's a little like this: Finesse < Fixed Fly < Circus (teflon hubs) < Suns (plastic washers)
Regular weight sundia suns are the one diabolo I don't have to try on a regular basis, but I'm curious why you prefer them that much over the flys. From what I remember they feel fairly similar on the string.
Title: Re: Favourite Diabolo Poll 2009
Post by: Marijn on January 02, 2009, 11:58:53 PM
Flys feel a bit ''bumpy'' and ''sticky'' on the string to me. Sometimes a bit like the diabolo decides what is going on instead of myself. Hard to explain, I just feel like I can't reallt tame Flys, I never really feel in control, always have the feeling something unintented and annoying is about to happen when I play with 'em.

Suns feel smooth and very decent (in a good, reliable way). When I play with them I feel more convident to try more complicated and/or experimental stuff because they respond so smooth and natural to my movements.

Circi are very decent and reliable, but lack a bit of smoothness (in my opinion).
Title: Re: Favourite Diabolo Poll 2009
Post by: Sean on January 03, 2009, 01:23:21 AM
Interesting. I'd compare the light suns to the flys similarly, although I've never been sure that it's not just the older versus newer style axles. I do find my flys more stable though and long spinning than the light suns. A natural product of the rotational mass I presume. I also find them a bit grippy or bumpy at times. Maybe it's the stiffer material. Maybe it's the fear of one of the sharp bricks wrapping up and hitting you in the face.

Damnit, you're making me want the one diabolo I don't have in my collection. :P Still, I find any of the wider axled diabolos much harder to reliably throw start 3. It seems to me like a narrower axled opaque light Sun (with slightly more durable cup material) might be the perfect diabolo for me... but not many people have used the narrow axle Fly, and are narrow axles for the Sun even manufactured?

My preferences have gone: Some ancient MB thing because it was all I knew -> Circus -> Finesse wide axle -> Circus -> Finesse normal axle -> Circus -> Fly -> Circus -> Taibolo -> Light Sun -> and now I have no idea what my favourite would be, although I brought my Circuses with me travelling for a couple weeks if that says anything. edit - and by the end I hated them - I'm back to Suns.

They are a bit wobblier, less precise, and uglier, but they sure are great all around diabolos. I like them with the plastic (ultralight) washers though - I find them too heavy and less stable with the metal washers. The oldest (that's still around), least sexy, and with no generational improvements diabolo is still around for a good reason. It seems like if you watch the diabolo use patterns of many long time diaboloists, they all end up back at Circuses if you wait long enough.

I've said it before and I'll call it again: in 50 years we're all going to have moved back to Circuses.

Edit - and I'm back to Suns already. I'm sorry I ever left you fellas! (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=5949.msg72575#msg72575)

Zack likes plain circii, in fact seems to prefer them with chipped hubs...

I have no idea why MRb bothered changing from gen 2 to 3 since gen 2 rocked

Every time I use circii I'm tempted to go back to them, mine have pom hubs but I have a sneaking suspicion that JC's narrow hubs would be the way forward for me. Pity about the colours and how dirty they get.

I quite like Suns but would like the latest ones as I prefer lighter diabs. The Suns Nev had at the BJC with teflon hubs were so nice.

The diabolos that seem to be my favourite at the moment are my Taibolo MK1's, Angela sent me some gen 2 washers (thanks Angela) so I'm going to get those on and see how they feel. (been using plastic fly washers for a good while)

I try quite a few diabs, mainly because I like having a little collection, but I always find myself going back to circi, for me they are about the perfect weight, I don't see how people think they look uglier than a finesse but I guess its all about what you like!

I've always been about the Henrys Circus All-round hubs.  They've always achieved whatever I've wanted from a diabolo though I've not had the chance to really give the new version Suns and Flys with all of their mods.

I think I'll stick with the Circuses because I've found hubs that I like, the cups that I like and I've never wanted for more.  Perhaps should my circumstances change over this long year, I might change my vote.  I have often found a need for bearings for some of my "tricks" to work, but then I think I should just create some actual tricks.

Might as well add my two cents here.

I've tried quite a few, and I'm still a big fan of stock Suns. I've tried them with plastic washers and they feel like air to me. Stock Suns are the perfect diabolo for me.

yeah, tbh it is about the diabolo not the axle with it. the fact that the diabolo has all of the modding opportunities just gives it more reason to vote for it?

I'd like to add that the circus is the Ray Mears of the diabolo world. It looks a bit rough but he could kick Bear Grills (finnesse if you like?) head in. Also the ladies love him.

If you disagree (with this slightly pointless statement) then you're wrong.

Put in my vote for Diabigs again...apparently I´m the only one :P.

Tried many new diabolos (but not all) and settings for them but still still nothing quite touches a nice, heavy, old type Diabig for me. Maybe with carbon-axles and weights a wide fly would but have yet to try that.

Calling the Diabigs "Yoho" like in the poll is borderline blasphemy though. The true Diabigs are Bandai, Yohos are inferior ;).

Although Bandai Diabigs are no longer manufactured, no? And even Bandai Diabigs still have Yoho printed on them, correct? I'd still love to get a set of Bandai Diabigs, but I didn't think they were made anymore.

The Bandai version stopped production in about 2005.  I dont think the true Bandai's ever had "yoho" on them - they had "Hyper Diabolo DIABIG" on the cups and plain washers (or at least mine do).  The AUS made Yoho's are not even close to the Japanese version in terms of quality IMHO.

My favorite diabolo is the original Sun cups with Plastic washers and black alu teflon axles - 260g.
The closest stock diabolo is the 255g Sun so that got my vote over the original Sun.

Yup that is correct what nev writes. No mention of Yoho anywhere on the real Diabigs and they´re still my favorites (even though they´re no longer made :'(). I thougt 2006 since ejc06 they had stopped stocking them and Naranja ran out at exactly that time, but nev as a seller would probably know better. Could be they still had leftover from halting the production.

nev, the ones you mention was the type that existed before the ones sold at around 2005. I wanted some of those old type in translucent limegreen but at that time the only japanese store I found were not willing to ship internationally :(.

Some of those types were even limited as well (like the Flys), don´t know if the ones in the pic were or not.

Oh man, those pictures of transparent diabolos have existed in diarythm since 2000 or like 01.
Remember watching them and thinking that they looked cool. That's like 100 years in life of diabolo and dogs. Surprised actually that the whole diarythm site is actually still up...

^^ yes I know the transparent diabigs were "limited" and not readily available since about 2003 I think - I just remember trying to find some in late 2005 - no luck of course.  I've researched my dates a bit more and the regular bandai diabig stopped stopped in early 06 but some shops still had them till late 2006.

I whole-heartedly change my vote to the light suns. After going a couple weeks and 1 convention with nothing but my circuses I missed the smooth as butter, ultra forgiving, look so sleek goodness of my Suns more than I ever imagined possible. I take back anything negative I ever said about these things. First day practicing with them when I got back, after struggling to throw start 3 circuses all weekend, I threw a clean 3d pirouette and my first ever 3d suicide. I just wish they didn't have to be transparent. Yes they look oh so cool, but sometimes you just want normal looking opaque diabolos. Taibolos come a close second - I'd settle for them any day.

Now that my wrists are doing better, I may try my hand at regular suns with plastic washers again. A little bit extra stability, rotational inertia, and opaqueness sounds appealing.

You're like a genie in a bottle granting my every wish. Well you now... Sometimes my credit card doesn't want my every wish granted damnit! :)

Is this going to be a thing of the future in a full color set or just a small scale thing?

While we're at it, now that you've had some time to play with both, how would you describe the differences between the 255g and the regular model? Obviously one is a bit heavier and will spin a bit longer, but: How is the feel? Is one noticeable more stable than the other? Are they both as smooth? How similar is the material? Is one more durable than the other?

--
And on an unrelated note, in Quebec city at TurboFest, just about everybody was using circuses with giant hubs. And I do mean just about everybody. Take off Jacob, myself, 1 or 2 sets of finesses, and the occasional metal hubbed circus, it was all giant hubs as far as the eye could see. Interesting how you get pockets of certain gear affiliations like that. I was the only one with regular width POM circus hubs.

At the moment only black and white in the opaque 255g cups - not sure about the future - depends on demand I guess.

I haven't played with a full metal washer 290g Sun for a long time as I find them too heavy.  I don't remember them feeling much different - a bit longer spin time.
The plastic washer 275g feels very much like the stock 255g ones though.  The cup material seems to be the same only a bit thinner on the 255g ones and the hubs / axles etc are exactly the same.
The above is mostly from memory as my 255's currently have black axles and LED's fitted so they are actually 260g and smoother/slippier on the string.

Its possible to get the weight of the 255's down to 220 if needed.

Look mate, basically every post you have made in the short time you have been a member is bigging up something you sell. It's not overly appreciated, how about some posts about something else, some videos maybe a VOTW how about trying to be a productive member of the forum before trying to make money from it?

I have to say that from all of the above list my vote goes to the taibolo (http://www.taibolo.com) - their glary diabolo (http://www.taibolo.com/glary-diabolo.php) is just such a candy. second place goes to finesse.

Finesse will almost certainly get top as almost everyone seems to have them. The only reason I started with them because I didn't know any better. I wish I had started with circus or suns. Saved my money instead of waisting it on finesse.

Taibolos are my favorite, with giant circuses in second.

It's just a matter of preference. I know a lot of people who don't like Finnesses - including myself.

Normal axle finesse.

As far as professional models, I've only played with the Circus and Finesse G3 (both without mods).  In my limited experience, I'd say I like the Finesse more, mainly because of the lighter weight.  Although it is a little harder to correct for beginners (like my wife), it has more positive than negative.  I really like the fact that they are about 10 USD lower than most others.

Then you'd probably love the Circus with plastic hubs and washers. Unfortunately that set up certainly is anything but cheap.

Right now I'm pretty convinced that the 270 gram (normal) Sundia Sun with plastic washers is the best diabolo out there. Some other diabolos are arguably nicer for certain types of diaboloing, but overall, the Suns excel at everything and are poor at nothing. I've never been so content with my diabolo choice as I am right now.

Anyone notice that the Sun diabolos are trailing only the Finesses now? (ahem... marketing, sponsorship, mass availability, and slightly cheaper)

In fact, the combined Sun groups outnumber even the combined Circus groups. The times are changing. Nev's in a good place.

well... everyone in the world kind of has a finesse
but then lots of people like sundia diabolos because of ryo yabe

I've voted for finesse with a wide axle, but I think that no matter how nice the diabolo is, you still require practice to learn a trick. People say the taibolos are terrible but that doesn't stop ryo yabe from doing amazing tricks with them.

Who says Taibolos are terrible!? Ryo Yabe uses (and is involved in the development of) Sundia Sun diabolos, not Taibolos. William is associated with Taibolo.

Light Suns FTW! But then again, they are the only ones I've played with other than the Chinese yo-yo.  I've tried someone else's Finesse (forgot what G) but not enough for a vote change.  They seem nice though.

u dont even feel theres a diabolo in there xD
i voted sundia fly.

I don't have to whip mine every 30 seconds... for good examples of people not having to, and doing long combos, Crackers and L.C.A.B spring to mind...

Harlequin hands down. Close second is a circus with grind kit. I like the harlequin cuz it's nimble and light enough to easily do suicides.
