Title: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009 (call for submissions)
Post by: Sean on August 08, 2009, 03:34:24 AM
You've seen (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=1875.0) it (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=3529.0) before (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=6926). The sheer awesomeness amazed you. Be a part of something big.

Announcing the official call for submissions for the Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009. We're celebrating our 5th year anniversary in November and 5 years is an eternity for an internet forum. This video will be part of the celebration.

Who?
This year our faithful editor will be none other than our very own Jesse of Incase of Emergency (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=6528) fame. He's Canadian. He's a great diaboloist. He's one heck of an editor. He's an all-around swell guy. All hail this year's King.

What?
A stupendously amazing compilation of short video clips from the global diabolo community. The tricks don't need to be hard. The tricks don't need to be complicated. The clips just need to be interesting, shot in an interesting place, shot with a reasonably high quality camera, and shot with decent lighting.

When?
We are accepting submissions from now until September 30th. You hear that? Get creative. Get crazy. Get filming. NOW.

Where?
Upload your clips to a file hosting site such as http://mediafire.com/ (http://mediafire.com/) or your own server and send a link through the officially sanctioned Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009 submission form: http://diabolo.ca/collab

Please for the love of Henrys yellow string (the old unspeckled kind) don't use rapidshare. Would you want to sit there waiting for the timer to tick down for all these clips? I didn't think so.

Why?
Because this creates that nice warm fuzzy community feeling you get when a large group of people gets together and CREATES something amazing. Plus it's going to be one heck of a good video. Don't miss being a part of it.

What are we looking for again?
Something interesting that involves the diabolo. Your clip or clips do not have to include hard complicated tricks with crazy integrals or 4 high siteswaps. That stuff's going to happen anyways so there's no need to encourage it. Variety is key folks.

If 4 high siteswaps aren't your thing then listen up. Your clip just has to be interesting to other diaboloists. Your trick could be funny or stupid (but still entertaining). It could explore some very basic aspect of the diabolo in a new way. It could be an interesting tweak on an old trick. Be creative. We'll leave it at that.

Most importantly, it needs to be FILMED WELL. That means:
1. Borrow a proper video camera if you don't have one. 640x480 pixels and 25 frames per second minimum. No need for HD. The final video will be in SD anyways.
2. Film with an interesting background that still makes it easy to see you and your gear. This almost always will mean GOING OUTSIDE.
3. Film with good light. This means do not film with the light or sun directly behind you.
4. Upload the clip in its original file format for Jesse. Do not recompress it. The files are going to be big (~30-100mb). That's OK.

Here's another key part. Keep your clip a secret. Don't post it on the web. Don't talk about it on the forum. Trust me, it's far better that way.

Although I'm sure Jesse will try his hardest, he won't be able to include everyone's clips. I can tell you from past experience that more often than not clips will be rejected for filming quality rather than content. Get that part right, OK?

If you have any questions, post them here or ask Jesse at collab09 "at" diabolo "dot" ca.

Got it? Then diabolo, film, and submit (http://diabolo.ca/collab).

Also, what if the quality is just too low, like 23 frames or 630x450 ?

Looking forward too it!

Can we post the video on jugglingtv where you can download it?

btw, this is extremely creepy to me because I had a dream about this last night but I just remembered now. wait, those are premonitions. I'm getting off topic. point is, I'm so EXCITED and some good music choices would be "Fireworks" from the Harry potter 5 soundtrack and (Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Title Of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued" (WITHOUT LYRICS) by fall out boy, both of which you could probably get with a bittorrent downloader.

Yes, but make sure you un-tick 'public' when you're uploading it - you don't want to spoil the surprise.

Cool! In the submit part of the site, it says you have to rename your file to firstname_initial_discriptive_words.avi, but what does initial stand for? (I know I'm stupid probably) Is it the first letter of your last name?  :-|

Is it the first letter of your last name?  :-|
Yes. It's not really essential unless we have multiple people with the same name. Up to you.
Any other ways too send the clips? Like, at collab09 @ diabolo.ca or an email of some sort?
The video files will be far too big to e-mail as attachments. Please use the submission form so that Jesse can keep all the data organized.
Also, what if the quality is just too low, like 23 frames or 630x450 ?
Good luck finding a camera that shoots that frame rate and resolution! There are certain standards. If it's iffy, ultimately it's Jesse's discretion.

Ok, so am I right in assuming that it would be better to send in one clip of you doing a few tricks, than to send in multiple clips?
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009 (call for submissions)

Probably better if you split up your tricks into separate clips unless they are meant to go together.

The collab video shows the true evolutionary path of the diabolo from year to year. Sadly, each year seems to pass by more quickly than the previous....

Or spare them the server space and just create a temporary download link at a site like http://mediafire.com (http://mediafire.com)
All it takes is 2 clicks, then a 3rd to select your file:

I've got this videocamera (http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/camcorders/0,39029965,39189153,00.htm). The review says that it has an effective sensor resolution of 40 000, but I honestly don't know what that means, so can anyone tell me if this is a proper videocamera to film diabolo with, e.g. for this collab?
thanks :)

Yes, that's just fine. The important part for our purposes is where it says "PAL". Just make sure to get it to Jesse in its native DV-AVI format.

The native files of my camera are MPEG-2. Should I send them in DV-AVI or MPEG-2 then (or am I confusing some technical stuff now?)? And something else; I guess it isn't useful to film in widescreen?
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009 (call for submissions)
Post by: Sean on August 16, 2009, 04:40:19 PM
Whatever the native format of your camera is. MPEG2 is fine. The important point is that you don't recompress it. Don't film in widescreen unless you have to.

It shouldn't be that hard to switch it off. Have a look in the user manual. But if you can't figure it out, then send it in HD. Just remember that the final video will be SD.

This makes for an interesting conundrum...

Does one keep their best, freshest trick for their own video, which 3 or 4 people will look at.

Or does one submit it to the Collab so that it will be seen by many ... only to be overshadowed by others' greatness?

JVC GZ-MS100.

Is this a good format for the collab?

Weird, i must have the setings wrong coz i made some diabolo vids as well as some parkour for my friends but it always filmed in MOVO. I had to compress it into MPEG-2 or WMV so it could be opened in windows movie maker...?

I saw the link...thanks...but still wie MOVO?

Does anyone have this camero so he can tell my about it? Still in MOVO i hope i will be able to upload it.

I just got a crazy idea for a 2d trick not sure if i will pull it of till the dead line.
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009 (call for submissions)
Post by: Sean on August 24, 2009, 12:36:54 AM
Look. I have no idea what MOVO format is, neither does Google:
http://www.google.com/search?q=.movo+video+format (http://www.google.com/search?q=.movo+video+format)
and neither does JVC:
http://support.jvc.com/consumer/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028378&pathId=161&page=3&archive=true (http://support.jvc.com/consumer/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028378&pathId=161&page=3&archive=true)
JVC states that your camera records in MPEG-2 with 3 quality settings (ULTRA FINE (8.5Mbps)/FINE (5.5Mbps)/NORM (4.2Mbps)/ECO (1.5Mbps)) Set it somewhere from NORM to ULTRA FINE and you will be OK.

If you need help, read the instruction manual:
http://resources.jvc.com/Resources/00/01/01/YF256ien.pdf (http://resources.jvc.com/Resources/00/01/01/YF256ien.pdf)

I went on google and stuff and i find out that the MOVO thinghy is only informing my that it is a movie. Than i find out that the file it .MOD.

Here you can sye what wiki says_

Other MOD formats

MOD is also the file extension for several other applications:
It is the video file format used on many digital camcorders, such as the JVC Everio, the Canon FS100 and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders.

It is used for game modules by the game Neverwinter Nights.
It is used for AMPL module files.
It is used for the old phpBB Modification Templates.
The extension for the binary variant of the wavefront Obj format.

This is what wiki says.

I tried diferent seting but still its the damn MOD.

I will ask my seller thanks anywsays will tall on the forum what happened(if anything will;)

.mod is the file extension but the file format is MPEG-2. You can just rename them to .mpg (http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2008/06/12/how_to_convert_mod_video.htm).

Just a bit of advice for anyone using sony vegas.
When you go to render your video, choose Video for Windows (*.avi)
Choose the template Default Template (uncompressed)
Click Custom and change video rendering quality to good, I had renders set at good and best and the only difference is the filesize, 140mb compared to 75mb.
Hope this helps anyone with a slower connection. Also switch to the audio tab and take out the audio to bump it down another couple mbs.

Perhaps it's a better idea to export as PAL DV, instead of Uncompressed. PAL DV is also a template option. And yes, don't export the audio, it saves space.

"1. Borrow a proper video camera if you don't have one. 640x480 pixels and 25 frames per second minimum. No need for HD. The final video will be in SD anyways."

It's mentioned that the files will be big (30-100 Mb). I've done some filming, but my files all end up around 6-14 Mb... They are all 16-30 sec long and meet the requirements. All I've done is to film and then upload the clips to my computer, no compression along the way. What do you think?

EDIT:
Nvm, I converted the clips to .avi files and they all popped up to 50-100 mb... I'll upload tonight (if my Internet-connection is fast enough) :)

Nope... not really.

Its easy enough to zoom in isn't it? and that will take some of the quality away but get rid of the finger.

Can't you just film it again? That would be the easiest thing to do.

I didn't sign up for removing fingers.  ;)

I didn't look deeply yet, but I think I might not be able to film 4/3 with my camera, only 16/9. Would that be a big problem ?

I recently got a new camera that films in HD by default. I just discovered that by using the SD (standard) option, it allows me to film in 4/3 (I think that's the case anyway - I'm in work at the moment and don't have my camera on me to check)  :P

It's not a huge problem, but it is a bit ugly and annoying to work with in a mainly 4:3 video. You don't wanna be a pain in the ass, now do you? :P

Alright, so because some people still have to have the quality sorted out and whatever other reasons you can think of I have moved the deadline by one week.

The deadline for sending your clips in is October 7th.

If you miss that you can still send clips, but I won't guarantee that they will make it.

So instead of uploading it to Mediafire, can I just post it on my Youtube channel? Also, I don't think i'll have the time to send in a lot of short clips. Can I post a 3-4min. video on youtube, and you guys will take care of it?!?    PLZ HELP ME OUT HERE!!

Don't post it on youtube!!!!

I believe Jesse has said something to the tone of: you can send it in after the deadline but there are no guarantees. Depends what stage he's at in editing the video. Knowing how HUGE a job this is (thanks Jesse!) I doubt he's there yet. There are other free uploading sites besides mediafire. rapidshare is one. Just don't post it on youtube! Once you've publicly released it you've invalidated it.

So you can send them in for Jesse and they might not make it in. Alternatively, you could send it for a votw and I'll have a look at it.

That being said, if anyone has videos that they want to send in for a votw, please send them in. We're in need of some if the votw series is going to restart.
