Title: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009
Post by: Sean on December 20, 2009, 03:42:00 AM
Jesse Gehlen (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=853) has compiled the the largest diabolo video collaboration project to date. The 2009 Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video features 47 diabolists from 37 cities and 14 countries in 15 action packed minutes. Filmed and edited over 5 months. This is the fourth annual Diabolo.ca Collaboration video celebrating the fifth anniversary of the forum.

Thanks to all who submitted clips and made this video what it is.

I can't thank Jesse enough for taking on this monumental project and in the end producing a masterpiece that the entire diabolo community can enjoy for years to come.

To play them in VLC, just put them in the same folder as the video. Then you can select them from the "Subtitles Track" menu item in the "Video" menu (disable, track1, track2, etc).

Want to make some comments that people can play along with the video? Download this .csv file (http://diabolo.ca/scripts/dcacollab09-subs-template.csv). Open it in any spreadsheet program (OpenOffice or Excel for example) and add your comments in the "Subtitles" column. Add as few or as many as you'd like. Then send me the file (sean "at" diabolo "dot" ca) and I'll send you back a subtitles file as well as post a link in this post. Want to do it all yourself? Then download this .srt file (http://diabolo.ca/scripts/dcacollab09-subs-blank.srt) and edit it in any text editor (Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) for example). It should be self explanatory.

Untill next years collab, that is...

Amazing video! Lots of nice locations, good editing (good job jesse), cool tricks and diabolo jugglers. My personal favorite is Arjan's entrance into 4D... YOU ARE A BEAST ARJAN!

I like so many of the tricks in the video, and had a lot of fun watching it.
Sergej & Daniel, it almost looks like you have asked that kid to attemt a backflip.

Btw, Duncan, that 3d grind-thing shuffle was pretty cool

That was so class, the level of diabolo in this video is insane! The editing ain't too bad either ;).

For me I thought the best bit was how many different people there are in the vid, lots of people that I don't recall seeing any footage from ever, or even a forum post. I think its  great to see that the community (although a little slow on the forum at times) is very big and alive. Brilliant.

Looby I'm so glad you managed to get that on camera, it looks absolutley stunning.

Jem are you going to be attending BoB? Think thats the only convention I saw you at last year which is a bit of a shame, your style is getting so slick and your 2d stuff is amongst my favourite style in diabolo.

Really hope you Dutch lot make it over to a British convention (or the other way around) Southern lights springs to mind :).

Amazing, like it is every year. Great work to everyone involved, especially Jesse.

EDIT: I've just watched it again and I'm fairly sure Jacob and Nate's location should be "Cambridge, MA" not UK.

Yes, sick as always.
Jussi's stuff was my favourite. But Elijas Cross armed neck transfer was sooooo good too.

Also, blame Looby for the lack of anything by me, and my general tardiness.

Funty and Ken made me smile as ever, good to see the ass slap being put to good use...
Love the base string trick Ceri-anne, Arjan, loving your 2 high start, been trying something very similar to it but got nowhere near so bravo sir.

A few names big names missing though, you know who you are ahem jonny, void, william, nev ahem :) your contributions owuld have no doubt increased the silliness which is always a good thing.

Cheers Jesse, I raise a cup of tea to you sir!

Again a great collab video!!

Great being part of it! And for a 30 secondes of film :D

Haha, it made me grin, the reaction about everybody enjoying the diabolo.
I mean, i have seen many bored faces that the trick FINALLY accomplished.

Anybody have uploaded it to vimeo yet? So I can place it on my personal page :)

Damn I need to work on my English :D

Lovely video Jesse, once again thanks for all your work and congratulations with the big accomplishment!

Great to see so many different people and styles. When watching I felt like the community is doing prettay, prettay good! The music contributed to that atmosphere.

On another note, I really like how we add something cool each year. First the name + location. Then the commentary in subtitle form. Now a map of all featured cities :) What's next?

I was wondering about that.  :( I shall have to watch it again at some point so I can pay attention to more of the tricks rather than obsessing about that little error.

Cool video though, nicely done everyone!

I was wondering about that, but I decided to use the names I got when people sent me the clips. I got that clip and in the field where you put your real name, it said Suzanne. Sorry about that!

I would like to thank everyone who sent me clips - even the ones who didn't make it to the final video! Received so many awesome clips! And of course a big thank you to Sean and Martijn for helping me out along the way.

Oh and I'm pretty sure it's Cambridge, UK not MA.

I'm really glad Looby got that too - I recall him trying to perfect it at Bristol this year.

Thanks for that Hath, yes I will be at BoB. This time I'm getting a hotel room so some beer can be consumed! Look forward to seeing you there.

Amazing!! Congratulations to every diaboloist that took part or enjoyed it, specially, of course, to Jesse (even if is not my kind of music, it really fits)

Proud to be here.

Awesome tricks everyone!

My faves:

Arjan - love the 4 high and other stuff you did  :-D
Pieter's crazy bounces from 3 high
Sharpe bro's sprinkler with 2 strings!!!
3D low with stick grinds :)

No idea. All I know is that it took way more than I expected. I was like "yeah I can do that, it's going to be a lot of work, but not too bad". Receiving files, figuring out their settings, converting them and all that just takes an incredible amount of time. The editing itself is easy and quick, but all the other stuff were quite time consuming.

Marijn's clips, even though I had seen them already.
Chloé!
Ken and Funty both made me laugh out loud. Would like to meet you some day.
Pieter's 3d bounces. They completely caught me off guard.
Jason at 13:25. Never seen you before, fun little simple trick you came up with there.
Nate and Jacob's sprinkler.

Big up to everyone, especially Jesse! It was nice to see that someone with different ''editing-skills'' still has been able to produce such a masterpiece. Was it different than last times? Yes! Was it still awesome? Hell yes!

I personnally think that the video is so long and im a bit disappointed of some tricks in there
Hopefully that is just a bit lost in translation, but what are you talking about? How did some of the tricks "disappoint" you? And remind me why are you complaining?

The 8 guarantees of every collab video:
1. It will take a lot longer than the editor thinks it will... even though we've got the whole process more and more streamlined over the years. I don't think anyone fully appreciates the size of the undertaking until they've done it themselves. Welcome Jesse.
2. Most people will be incredibly grateful (thank you) and declare it the "best thing ever"... until next year that is. ;)
3. The video quality will get better as technology improves and cheapens and people send in better quality clips. Plus, every year we learn something more about combining different aspect ratios, frame sizes, and interlaced field orders.
4. Usually someone's name will get misspelt. The editor's heart will sink and he will debate the long process of re-rendering.
5. Someone will ask "why isn't that-awesome-diaboloist-who-needs-to-be-in-there in the video?" Because he/she didn't send anything in, that's why.
6. Someone will complain "why didn't my trick make it in when that other one did?" Because the editor had to make some very hard decisions about what to include based on both video quality and content. The editor was only able to use a fraction of the clips he received and is also considering the next point:
7. Someone will complain "it's too long", "why didn't you take out all those clips that I didn't like?" Because (1) see the previous point, (2) the idea is that this is an inclusive a project as possible made by as many people as possible, (3) not every trick has to be earth shattering, and (4) note the emphasis on the I in "I didn't like".
8. Those of us that invested copious amounts of time into putting the project together will get all riled up by such comments and post replies like "The 8 guarantees of every collab video". :) That is all.

Oh, our bad. Next year we'll make sure to magically include clips of people that were never submitted. [nb]Plus, may I direct you to points 6 & 7 in my above post?[/nb]

Jesse, shame on you. [nb]Actually, I was amazed at how many new faces we saw in this video that weren't in previous collab videos.[/nb]
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009

A Fantastic selection of points there.
The Turbo videos were my first attempt at something collaborative. All those different cameras and formats and shapes and ARGH!! (thank toast for having an AMAZING convert-everything-in-the-world-to-one-format-freely-imported-straight-into-FCP-without-needing-of-renderage)
Then when everything was together in one place, choosing what works and what doesnt and for the music and which angles look to similar. All these things which are much easier when it's just your video - because you take the time to variate, and to find nice places and frame well and everything - then when you receive everything from other people and it's just not the same.
In the process, some things get left out. And with no intention, I actually left out ALL the clips from one person, some of which were really good. I just never found a place to put any, they just didn't fit. Then i got to the end and oops!
Turns out I have enough clips left over to make another probably 3 minute video*
It happens.

Norbi - who will hopefully be included again in a future collab
---------------------------------
*which I won't

Im talking about that you only had put people which is known in the diabolo world in the collab, try something new  :o

I love how there's always one that turns something sweet, sour.

In all seriousness, I'd be interested to see your contribution and give you a critical opinion on why it wasn't included.  Until then, quit flogging a dead horse, Jesse includes what he feels makes the video complete, he alone looks at the overall composition of the piece, we aren't to know how effectively one piece will fit in during the editing process until we see the finished article.

Infact, just read what Sean and Norbi said.

I say im a bit disappointed by some tricks because the collab of the last year was more (selective?) and I think some tricks in this (that im not going to quote) were a bit " déja vue " .
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009
Post by: Sean on December 21, 2009, 06:15:20 PM
Ah, well that's probably because the point of the collaboration videos isn't for everything to be "new" or "never-seen-before". For the most part, that's the purpose of the videos of the week. The collaboration video is about creating an entertaining high quality diabolo video with as much worldwide community participation as possible. Hence the emphasis on lots of people, interesting filming locations, and high quality video. I think it's pretty obvious that some of the clips feature tricks that we have all seen before. But, are they filmed interestingly or in an interesting place? Is the quality of the video high? Are they performed cleanly? Are they reasonably challenging or conversely perhaps they are easy but creative? These are the kinds of questions that are asked.

Do note the irony that that there are two separate debates going on here. One from a person who thinks we should have included more and another from someone who thinks we should have included less. And then you start seeing the fine balancing act that the editor has to perform. In different years we have deviated slightly to one side or the other, but I hope we can all appreciate that a decision has to be made and no matter what the decision some people are going to wish it was more to one side or the other. I think all the previous videos (and definitely including this one) have found a balance that is very much within reason.

Anyways, this is all much less interesting than comments directly related to the video.

I hope to make a subtitle file sometime soon. In the meantime, I'll say that Ken, your exit stage left cracks me up every time. Damn I wish I'd managed to meet you in London.

Great video all around.  I think these videos will provide snapshots of each year in diabolo, giving a great look into the evolution of diabolo years from now.  Arjan, it's great to see the stuff that's coming out of your work at school (I assume).  I wish more people would focus on diabolo at circus schools, there's so much more out there!  Jesse, good work on the massive editing job.

Also, to settle the MA/UK debate, the Sharpe Brothers are in Cambridge, UK for the year attending Cambridge University.  We grew up in MA.  My clip was filmed in Cambridge, UK, and the double string sprinkler was actually filmed in Stavanger, Norway.

I have to admit I'm leaning towards your point of view, as there were indeed a few clips I thought were boring (I noticed that when writing my comments in the subtitle file), but like Sean said, we need to find a balance, because there are also quite some people that would rather see all submissions fit in.

I think we have managed to create a very nice balance between ground-breaking tricks and beginner tricks (for a lack of a better word) every year!

I can't believe that some angry 'child'? has derailed a thread that some people have been waiting for, for a while. Others have put their opinions across in a fair manner and that little debate about skill/inclusion always pops up and always will (quite rightfully to, as this really does effect how people receive a video). You however are just angry because you didn't get included, I guess in fact that you probably didn't get included because your trick was pretty sub-standard or possibly because it wasn't filmed very well. I doubt however that Jesse sent you an email saying you would definatley be included when he never intended on it, he says he has emails to prove that you would not be included, even without these I am much more inclined to believe someone like him then some little angry pre-adolescent/just beginning adolesence/behaves like a 5 yr old? like yourself.

However I could be very wrong so please upload your clip so that we can all view it and reap upon it the HUMUNGOUS amount of praise that it is clearly worthy of, I'm sure it will rack up as many posts as this video has, as it is clearly super awsome and amazing. However as I have said I am much more inclined to believe Jesse so I guess all thats left to do is use a quote from possibly the most unfairly treated member of this forum.

you are completely wrong man! You only hear what you want to hear!

I was never really too fond on preparing to tank through 15 minutes of pure content, but I can't say that anymore the more I watch this video.  The level of awesomeness of the collab videos has reached a point where my brain ceases to process that awesomeness.  During viewing, my neuron activity flatlined and I was left in a state of pure dumbfoundedness and ecstasy.  Great, 特好, すごい, prima, fantastique, and any other adjectives which I know of that can describe this video with goes out to all of the amazing techies who made this possible.  The tricks were all more evolved from their previous years of infancy and the integrals (yes, so many integrals I see) were as bountiful as ever.  Beautiful settings too, which I guess must be part of the blood and sweat Jesse has secreted in his careful selection.  I would LIKE to say that it'd suck if my video wasn't chosen, possibly due to my inexperience with filming, but since I never made the deadline anyway I'll keep quiet about this.  Next year, with mind-blowing tricks and background, definitely, I promise.  And if not, then next next year, with breath-taking high-quality shots, I promise.  And if not......

By the way:  From Martijn:
Quote
On a different note, I'm thinking of taking up the task of editing next year's collab, this video got me all excited again :)
I like that idea :)  We get to see another editing master at work...but hey, on the other hand, find some other people with good editing hands and work together on it.  Better yet, Get Jesse and work together on it...it might look more awesome?

daniel 8:25, although there's not a new trick in it, I really liked the style
sergej 10:50, gotta steal that one
ceri-anne 12:55, I always enjoy seeing those carbon only tricks as I never try them
jason 13:35, cool idea, doubt I've seen it before
the two person sprinkler was neat too
also kinda liked williams 2d genos, they need a cleaner execution though
same goes for lots of integrals..

music choice was mostly terrible, editing was ok (as expected from a collab) and there were a lot boring clips in it,
but overall it was nice to watch, thanks for making

First of all, I want to thank Jesse for putting yet another amazing collab video this year. Jesse, you put so much effort into this video and it turned out beautiful.

@bums3n: I do not see how you believe that there were only people well-known to the diabolo world in this video. Certainly there were, but by far, I think this year had the most diversity of any year we have done the collab video.

My proof?
1. Look at the map Sean put on the first page. It spreads throughout Europe, but also Australia and North America!
2. Participants: What about that long list of people on the first page? And it's not like every person's name is repeated.
3. Diversity of Participants: There are a lot of new faces on this list.

The bottom line is, it's possible that you had a brilliant trick and maybe Jesse missed it, but you can't go around criticizing him and the more "well-known" diaboloists just because you didn't make it.

And again, I cannot stress how much Jesse has done. This is a beautiful video.

I'm already looking forward to next year!

Jason

What with Jesse doing a good job this year, and Martijn showing some sort of interest in editing again and the video now getting on towards 15 minutes I think next year I would quite like to see a collaboration in the editing as well, with 2-3 (or more) editing 5-4 minutes of footage each, and then one of them just to put the others together.

It not only would mean that the editors them selves (apart from 1) have a bit of a surprise but also the video would be quite different in that different editors are bound to pick different style of music take a different appoach to putting it together etc.
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009
Post by: martijn on December 22, 2009, 05:05:18 PM
Excellent idea Hath. I wouldn't know how to deal with dividing the clips between editors though. Something we need to think about, but it's definitely worth considering. Not only would it show different editing styles, but it will also divide the workload into small portions.

Midoryu was also thinking along these lines. In reply to:
I like that idea :)  We get to see another editing master at work...but hey, on the other hand, find some other people with good editing hands and work together on it.  Better yet, Get Jesse and work together on it...it might look more awesome?
I really liked the fact we asked someone from the community and not from the usual 'staff' around here to do the editing, to make it even more collaborative.

Maybe it's time to open a new thread for next year's collab :D
Title: Re: Diabolo.ca Collaboration Video 2009

Maybe set up multiple submission email addresses and people can randomly choose, or write a bit of script the randomly send the submissions to one of so many addresses (no idea how hard it would be to script but seems a simple algorithim?).

And then each editor would be able to make executive decisions on their part of the collab?

Martijn, liked your commentary. Jip's clip was perhaps a bit long, but I just loved the intense zoom out. If you see this Jip, I'd like to know where whoever filmed it was? Was it a hill or something. How did you communicate? That's a pretty sick camera too!

Well, it's a big landscape on the outside of Ommen in a place called Bestmen. It was filmed on a hill there but my friend was standing on ''de uitkijktoren''. Literally in English it's a ''look-out-tower''. A ugly 30 metres high staired tower. The camera was a television camera, my friend borrowed it from school, internship, he's filming motorcycles from the Assen Circuit with that thing (MotoGP, anyone?).

Communication wasn't really there, we stood there in the tower and thought, hey, what if we do a great zoom in or zoom out in the tower, wouldn't that be great? But i need to know something so i called him, and after that i discovered that yelling was enough  :-D

We've had more places filmed and had other great angles made (with same and other simple trick), but because some codec problems it never got well in Jesse's inbox, which is too bad, because it were great pieces too! After that, to solve the problem was too time-consuming that it just didn't made that in time... Maybe next year!

This video is filmed in the tower, it was 2,5 years ago (haven't made much progress after that, unfortunately...

2D Shuffle Practice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnYJ3RaafmY#)

At that point I haven't got that camera :P

And I know my trick was the less innovative, creative, and difficult one. But I wanted to don't make it sloppy, and I haven't diaboloed much since 2,5 years... I never learned anything after my sprinkler suicide. But the video combo with a perfect trick was the secret formula to get in this video, and i feel completely honored!

and again, sorry for my bad english :P

Greetings,

Jip

As always, a fantastic video. Brilliant effort everyone, especially you, Jesse; regardless of whether people liked it or not, or if they're upset about not being included, no one can deny the hard work you clearly put into this project. HUGE thanks your way, man :).

I few things (there are many!) that I thought were cool about this year's collab...

The bit with Duncan and Looby walking into shot was a wonderful piece of editing. It fitted beautifully.
Susannah, I love how in your shot, your diabolo colours match with at least one item of clothing you're wearing. That was a nice touch indeed!
Ceri-Anne, your first clip made me chuckle. I didn't notice what happened at first, but when the penny dropped, I couldn't help but smile.
Aaro, those flourished mini gen's were awesome. I think what I liked the most was that they were so subtle, again, I didn't quite realise what was going on at first!

But yes, well done D.ca, I'm looking forward to what next year's installment brings.

I'll say that Ken, your exit stage left cracks me up every time. Damn I wish I'd managed to meet you in London.

Same here, Sean. It's a shame that the snow derailed all our plans... If you're ever in London again, look us all up!

I've been waiting for this!

I must admit, I was woundering if Ken would be in this, and pleased he did, TWICE! (woot woot)

On the plus side, I REALLY enjoyed this like... LOTS! Just wish I had a working camera and my laptop working, all in all, I give this a 100 out of 10. =3
