General / Hurting and Breaking (spectators or equipment)

hahahaha... although anyone who's met me would probably be stunned that i managed to free myself without doing major damage in the process

hmmm... well the worst i've done was about erm... 10 minutes ago, i managed to genocide my friend in the testicles (hard enough for him to squeal like a pig) and in one smooth motion catch the string, try to throw it round the axle to unwrap only to have it wrap up and tie itself to my index finger tightly enough that i had to cut it off with my penknife.... oh the hilarity that caused amongst the rest of the people watching.

I think a garotte with a fire diabolo sounds almost as scary from the performers point of view as the excalibur.

Tricks / Is there a record for High Toss? (29.55m)
« on: May 04, 2005, 05:13:07 PM »
well i could be wrong but i rather thought the equation was just

Code: [Select]
(time/2)^2 * a = H

(think in terms of units, time is in s, accelleration is in M/s^2 therefore the result must be in metres)

which means that given that i can do just over a 4 second throw (timed by a mate yesterday) then i can throw:

Code: [Select]
(4/2) = 2

2^2 = 4

4*10 = 40 Metres high (taking gravity as 10M/s^2)

that seems vaguely feasible to me... but correct me if i'm being dense

I'm New / Getting very frustrated.(with 2d)
« on: April 20, 2005, 03:18:39 AM »
I'm afraid to say that most people seem to find learning to shuffle Very frustrating... it's just not an easy thing to learn.

Your equipment sounds fine to me but if you're after more information about what's good for 2D stuff then the kit sticky at the top of the forum has a great discussion of just this. One important tip i had at first was that a slightly shorter string than you'd usually use is helpful; i used one that reached from the ground to just above my belly button at first.

The difficulty might also be to do with how you're starting the shuffle. If you've been trying with a throw start then i'd suggest trying a wrap, some people just find one more natural.

There's a huge amount of info in the thread Starting and correcting 2 diabolos which might help you and i've also learned a lot from barnesy's site. You must remember though that the key is probably going to be patience, you'll find you get smoother and can hold the shuffle for longer with the diabolos spinning faster and more evenly and then you can really start correcting and pulling tricks. When you get it, it feels great!

(then you'll find yourself in the position where i am now, where the shuffle seems easy enough but the tricks mostly evade you   )

Hahahaha, now now seán_ you can't take all the blame for the design, i've not come up with anything better yet. When it gets a wee bit closer i have something which will make it look a bit more professional but it's not very useful yet.

Good luck with your shows Purplegirl, from what i've seen the main key is confidence. Getting a bit of banter and showmanship into the routine will help you no ends.

On a similar note I've drunkenly made a bet that i'll spend a day busking in Carlisle in the summer and attempt to earn enough money to pay for myself and a friends night out in the evening... could be interesting.

Gear / Durability...?

I havn't used a jazz but if it's anything like my circuses then being scratched and scuffed is just part of the deal... It seems a lot harder to do that to my finesse due to the material it's made out of but i doubt it matters very much.

I fully expect my three to last for many years to come and of course replacement parts are available as well so the lifespan can be extended more or less in definitely.

All in all, i wouldn't worry too much, just try to avoid concrete or sharp edges. Some of the... "more senior" diabolists may be abler to give a more authoriatative answer to the question of how long they last, it's worth noting that i still have a really cheap one from when i was 8 that still runs fine.

very nice, simple designs are better! For FTP i'd recommend Filezilla. It's simple to use and as fully featured as cuteFTP

it sounds like you have the right idea... if it helps, here's a clip of me doing it...

my technique there is awful (it's not usually that bad) but you can at least see how the wrap works

oh and after you warap it i don't think most people don't bother doing those snaps but it's just the way that feels most natural to me

great description seán_ Barnesy's site has a clip of the start performed "radio" style http://2diabolo.net/?page=27 and the principle is the same

i'm sure sopmeone has a clip of the other technique

« on: April 11, 2005, 03:14:45 AM »
i'm also a bit drunk and my technology skills were always limited so this mightn't be sensible but...

The rubber washers it's mounted with should give a little bit of heavy shock absorbtion for the electronics then pad them out with some scraps of foam, your cork etc... to absorb smaller knocks. Wrap the end tube in tennis racket grip to stop it hurting as much if you crack yourself with it.

There's probably a better way to attatch the bit with the switch as well but i can't really think of one at this time of night.

The thick bit at the end need only be an inch and half long or so... meaning that the added weight shouldn't be too much of an issue.

anyhow, just an idea... i'm sure someone has a better one.

could you use something like heatshrink tubing to cover the join? that would be cleaner+smaller... not sure how stong it would be though i suppose

edit: i've added a bit to the wikipedia diabolo entry here ifanyone feels like checking it, ammending it or improving my rather average english.
