I'm New / The next step? (advancing after first tricks)
« on: March 28, 2006, 09:57:11 PM »
Hey Nogbad.  I may be confused myself, but I would use a left-hand wrap if I was left-handed.  I am right-handed and use a right-hand wrap for chinese whips.  Just wrap your left stick around the diabolo clockwise and start whipping.  It will help if you keep your right hand a little farther from your body than your left hand is.  As for the motion, try downloading and watching some videos where chinese whips are used.  It's a little difficult to understand the motion by just reading or watching the little animation on diabolotricks.com.  I never really got it down until I watched Priam and JiBe doing it.

A lot of tricks can be done without switching the "rights" to "lefts," it will just be a matter of increasing or decreasing spin.  For the most part though, you will probably be better off reversing the directions into "lefty."

This is probably the best thread to post newbie type questions you can't find the answer to using the search function.  Good luck.

Videos / Yo-yo and Kendama stuff

Hi Guy,   I'd also be interested in seeing a copy of that DVD.  Your page pretty much got me going with kendama, so if you think the DVD is worth a look, I'll send shipping costs.  Thanks.

Hi Wolfgang.  I think mini-genocides are easier than full/regular genocides, but the man to ask is probably Norbi.   He is awesome with them.  Check out his videos.  I like the one with the a-team theme song.  It got me going with suicide tricks.

I think I posted on another thread awhile back about getting my sticks caught in a tree.  Never did get them back down.  I ended up with a rake, a broom, a patio chair and a pack of keebler chips deluxe cookies stuck up there with my sticks.

Not quite sure what has been finalized, but there was a picture of Norbi I saw once that I think was taken with a fish-eye lens.  He was throwing one or two diabolos high, and the picture was taken from over head.  The diabolo closest to the camera was very large and Norbi was smaller below.  Something done like that, similar to eggy's passing picture, would be pretty cool and really make the diabolo stand out.  Also, a good caption would be a line from Sam Jackson in "Pulp Fiction."  He says, "English %*@)#%(@%*$#, do you speak it?"  Since this is one of the only diabolo forums for English speakers.  :)

You guys are pretty funny!   XFirebladeX knows what's up!  Silver Creek, please make some more videos, especially with that old guy!  I've seen Matt H's videos, and that guy is a breakdancer, not a juggler.  The old guy would school him in diabolo, string climb and all.  Plus, that teacher has more hair than Matt H and me put together!

English as in British?  Is that some toxic substance?  I can't watch it again, I'm at work.

I didn't see anything in that video that would substantiate that claim.  I didn't watch all of it, I was busy working on my newest hoop routine, but I did see him throwing his diabolo down and getting it caught in a tree.  I just don't want him to get discouraged like that.

Well, it wasn't really meant to be sarcastic, just a word of encouragement.  I think it's cool that an older guy like him can get into something like diabolo.  We all had to start somewhere, and the guy is trying!  You never know, we may end up seeing him at some juggling conventions or even competing!

Dear Matt, I don't know if I can make it all the way out there, but I will try to help you with suicides... First, swing your diabolo to your left or right.  When it reaches shoulder height, let go of the stick in the trailing hand.  It will make a revolution and return to your waiting hand.  If that is too difficult at first, try a chinese suicide... which is the same thing only started with a trapeze.  Once you have mastered these, I will teach you Hara Kiri, my super secret new Japanese suicide trick.  Maybe you can help me with a good way to learn conjugations for Japanese verbs?
By the way, congrats on the string climb.  Keep practicing, and one day you will be the best diaboloist in the U.S.A. !  Maybe.

I'm definitely a guy.  Hoop comes from my unique style of playing diabolo, where I start 2 diabolos and place them spinning into to large steel hoops.  I then proceed to do a multitude of tricks; throwing the hoop and diabolo into the air for 3 revolutions and a catch behind the back.  The crowds especially love when I do this at night with my fire diabolos.  My style can be described as a grinding master.  I should come to Silver Creek and teach that Japanese teacher a few tricks!

You guys are funny... Juggle sensei!  I see that he is your Japanese teacher, but no way that old dude taught you guys how to do that stuff.  I even saw him get his diabolo and sticks stuck in a tree!

Awesome job!  Finally got to see Dracodragon working the diabolos.  Way to go man.  That's so cool that you guys taught your teacher how to use the diabolo too.  He's pretty good.  ;)

Welcome back...  It seems that we are still on par with one another.   I managed to get the shuffle down about 5-6 months ago, or maybe more.  I'm still working on 2D tricks though.  I haven't made much progress lately, it's too cold.  Glad to see you are still with us!

Tricks / Overarm Orbits
« on: October 04, 2005, 11:57:44 PM »
Hey Ruff, Until the pics arrive, try this:  To get into position for a right arm orbit, point your right stick to the right.  Next, bend your elbow so that your right hand comes toward you and the string goes under your upper arm.  Now turn the right stick so that it is pointing back toward you.  Toss the diabolo from your left stick side, over your arm and onto the right stick side.
