Videos / Diaboloists at universities
« on: September 06, 2006, 10:29:49 PM »
I'm off to York in a couple of weeks. Haven't been doing a whole lot of diabolo recently, I got into a rut and stopped but will be taking my gear with me and am hoping to meet some people who share my interest and can help me progress past what I've managed to learn myself.

Tricks / 1d Bouncing over arm/btb
« on: March 09, 2006, 11:03:52 AM »
When I learnt them, first I was trying to bouce the diablo off the string and straight back to the other side. This really doesn't work very well, is inaccurate, and I failed quite miserably.
When I though "catch, then throw back" it worked much better. Don't try and hit the diablo straight back, cushion it's landing then flick it back over. That's much smoother and more reliable. Once that works, you can work on making the catch and rethrow into one smooth movement, and it looks like you're just bouncing it, but without the unreliability of swatting at the diablo.

Hope we're talking about the same thing!

Wow, looks like great fun.
I'm once again inspired to spend a fortune on FireToys on lots of things I'll pick up once, find too hard and give up on!
Perhaps this is the sort of thing I need to get myself along to to get prodded in the right direction with some tips and some motivation from real life people!

Great videos, thanks :)

Not sure if I've posted in here before, I've not been around for a while, when I'm just playing around with the diabolo, the sun's out etc, I find The Postal Service fits real well, nice and melodic and chilled out.
I'm a big fan of them now, but even before I got into them, I used to still listen to them when I was diaboloing alone.

Babache extreme and energy: ... trim or melt of the excess

Sorry if this is OT but whats the point in this, i've never done it and mine work fine  :?

Just keeps it tidy; stops excess string waving around I guess? Melting will cause the loose end to warp a little and may stop it pulling back through the knot too?

Gear / Re: How many diabolos?
« on: February 22, 2006, 12:17:11 PM »
I own:

2 Henry's Circus - Orange and Green
1 Henry's Jazz - Purple
1 Old, dog chewed kids rubber thing - 1/2 Yellow, 1/2 Green
2 Old kids plastic things - Green and Yellow.

Making six. I've not diaboloed in a while, I intend to get back into it this spring, so I may treat myself to some new ones; I'm such a sucker for material goods, a nice new diabolo and I won't be able to help but start again!

General / I hate ceiling fans! what things have you broken doing Diab?
« on: February 20, 2006, 12:22:13 PM »
I went on holiday with my buddies in the summer. Took my diabolos, though I'd find some nice beach/park to play in the sun. I was mistaken, there wasn't a patch of open space or a blade of grass in the whole town!

So, like you do, I had to diabolo in our apartment. That went mostly well, if you stood in just the right place. It all went wrong when I got my loop out. Went for an over the shoulder whip catch, caught the ceiling light, and with the momentum of my swing, tore it from the ceiling in a shower of sparks, hot glass and swear words. That wasn't good! Cost me €55 in the end, which wasn't too bad, but shook me up quite a bit!

The benefit though, we had no light for a couple of days, which meant lots of space to diabolo in!

Videos / Regular whip catches
« on: February 19, 2006, 07:56:11 PM »
One thing I found really useful when I was learning (not sure if this is bad practice) was to to do everything as described, but once you've thrown the diabolo (if you're right handed), turn 90 degrees to your left, so you are looking at the axel when it comes down. I found that made it a lot easier to aim and ultimately catch.
I no longer need to do this; once you have a textbook whip catch mastered, you can do it from almost any angle, any way you like. It makes you wonder how you ever found it so hard!

There was the really young Dutch (I think?) guy, wasn't he 8 or something? I think he came here for one or two posts, but didn't stay long. Was a thread about him not long ago, I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: Niels, that was it. I'm wrong, he's 10 now. Still youngest so far.

Gear / is 2D with different diabolos possible?
« on: July 25, 2005, 11:36:08 PM »

I've wondered if someone who was really good already could do 2d with one big and one quite small diabolo. Obviously it would be hard to pop the big d, but the MFP can do anything, can't they?

I think being able to do rather crazy site swaps with two/three diabolos would be a lot harder than a normal shuffle with 2D. As far as I can see it's just a case of popping the heavier one a little harder. It'll be the same two 'pops' every time, so it's still more rhythmical than some of the site swaps they do on videos I've seen. Right?

Tricks / Eric's 'stairwalk' trick (figure 8 through the legs)
« on: July 22, 2005, 09:20:43 PM »
I thought it was a tie or twist that looked like it'd tangle the string but actually allowed it to be released freely.
If that's the case, my knowledge of diaboloing is worse than i suspected, I'd never have seen that as a worthwhile way of learning figure 8s  :?

Videos / New Video of Jojo
« on: July 22, 2005, 01:04:20 AM »
I streamed it because I'm impatient and on my way to bed, but I enjoyed the high quality and had no trouble watching it straight through (Will be back to download tomorrow I'm sure).

Was great to watch, nice moves, very smooth and very stylish. Is it just me that enjoys watching videos where the weather's nice?

Loving the second song too, I'm ashamed to admit I'm a big fan!
And I think I may have found a 1D combo in high enough quality to practice (read: steal) at last, I hope you dont mind  :P (I've been struggling working on my own with no others to base them upon)

« on: July 19, 2005, 11:56:25 PM »
Off Topic Question: Can anyone explain "renegade" for me please, in context of conventions? I think it's like an end-of-convention show, but am not sure?

Not been good enough to warrant attending a convention, I couldn't say what my ideal one would be, but learning lots and being amazed watching the pros would be a good start.

Gear / Re: Your diabolos colors. Why did you choose them?
« on: July 19, 2005, 11:51:14 PM »
Just got two new Circuses in orange and green. Not exactly sure why I chose them in the end, but I have a sneaking suspicion I was subliminally influenced by the Leeds Lot video

I think pink used to be OK for that kind of thing, now it screams, to me at least, "I WISH I WAS DIFFERENT". In a 14 year old girl's voice.
But that might just be me! I think everyone (including myself   ) jumping on the "pink is alternative" bandwagon kinda ruined it.

Diabolo is alternative enough, don't need pink props!

Wow pretty much sums it up.

Anyone that was there; was the old fashioned suit thing something to do with a theme, or is that just what they fancied wearing?

And I've never seen that long elastic diabolo thing before either. That a new thing, or just something less common that usual stuffs?
