Performances / Re: Hamish Smithers NJC 2017 Routine
« on: February 19, 2017, 07:21:08 AM »
Is it actually true that you had more than two years between posts??????? (I know the answer is yes because I checked)

Is this raw video? If it is, then you have immaculate timing, and a solid amount of the musical cues were bang on. If this has been edited/had a track overlaid, I'd still be super interested in seeing raw video just so I can see exactly what the audience saw.

Either way, it's awesome to see you post something again Hamish :D

P.S. your current signature vastly undersells yourself

It HAS been two years... life has been pretty crazy. I've still been training and going to festivals here and there, even posting some stuff, but yeah. Stuff doesn't always work out the way you would like it to. Just gotta keep trucking through! Hopefully I'll be able to be a bit more active now but... we'll see!

This is basically raw video. The music has been laid over the same music that was live, so it sounds nicer (music recorded from a live venue into a bad camera mic doesn't sound nice!), but the timing of the music hasn't been changed in anyway. I've been performing diabolo for like 7 years or something, and I think I've always just had a natural talent for timing to some degree, so I'm glad that it looks well timed! There is a small amount of editing to make things look cool here and there as well. I like trying to edit my performance videos a bit to try add a bit of flair (the trouble for me is not going too far and making it a mess!)

I'm glad you liked it though :)

And I think pretentious 12 year old is an... 'accurate enough' description haha :P

Often diabolos wobbling is a sign that they might be lose. Try tightening the screws. If that's not the case, the diabolo might be morphed out of shape, normally something that happens due to heat and weight, though it might happen from a high throw if your unlucky.

Was finally able to take time out of my busy schedule of procrastinating to shoot some tricks. After seeing how many clips there are, any estimation on how long it will take to edit / release the collab?

Performances / Re: Zelda Diabolo Performance by Hamish Smithers - MJC2014

@Not Skilled Yet
Thanks for the constructive feedback. This was really my first attempt at performing in character, normally my performance persona is either 'I'm the performer, how cool was this trick?' or a more artsy approach with both no character and the performer persona. I've been trying to get better at performing AS someone, rather than just performing, and I've also been trying to add more touches to tricks, such as the lifting of the leg you mentioned in the sprinkler. And you don't need to be a performer to give advice; how many movie critics make films themselves?

@Timo
I'm hoping it was a little awesome  :-D
A lot of the routine was created in such a way that most of the gags and the theme would fly over a lot of peoples heads, but for the few that got it it would be (i hope) funny/awesome/entertaining. I think my favourite thing was going backstage and having a juggler I didn't know too well going full nerd at me saying 'You should have started with a green diabolo, then a red one, then a blue one, then you get the mastersword! Like OoT!'. Apparently jugglers and nerds go together well. I guess you need to be a bit of a social outcast for both, eh!

Performances / Zelda Diabolo Performance by Hamish Smithers - MJC2014
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:01:46 PM »
Hey guys! For Melbourne Juggling Convention, I decided to put together a special performance combining 2 of my favourite things: Diabolo, and Zelda. I'm sure I just lost half of you but essentially it's my favourite video game franchise. So, I put together a performance with the goal of making it enjoyable for the general public (of which there were some at the performance), For jugglers and diaboloists, and those that shared my love of the Zelda series.

Before I link the performance, massive thanks to Richard Clement (who's footage is this. You might hear him say "YEAH" a couple of times.), Tyson Grant (who also got footage for me), and Jarle Bergo who freaked me out by showing interest in the performance.

I hope you like it!

Hey Samuli. This sounds really awesome!

So, start each trick with a throw (or trapeze, etc). What about tricks where that might be really hard? Or if trick is 3 diabolos, etc?

That's nice man! I can see drones being very useful for cinematic diabolo videos in the future!

Seeing how I didn't think anyone would vote for me, I kinda now regret voting for the one person with 1 more vote than me. Ah well. Whoever it is that edits, Awesome collab.

There was discussion on the topic about a month ago, and all the people on the list were those that volunteered during the discussion stage.

@Not Skilled Yet
I don't think it's meant to be a competitive thing, or atleast I hope not. To me it just seems like letting the people choose who edits. And as Wis said... the hours.

Awesome Rich!

And I just mean I don't have much of an income, other than what my parents allow me, and diabolo gigs here and there.

I think fancy after effects is not for the collab. The collab isn't about the editing, it's about the diaboloists.
And I agree, Nico's was one of my favourites, but give the guy a break! ^^
Should also mention, as a jobless 16 year old in Australia, I'm not up for EJC footage sharing.

So, my internet is probably getting upgraded in the next couple of months, and I don't think it's as bad as i may have made it seem. So, if we still need someone to edit, I'm here!

Hey, cool video!

However, it isn't a VOTW.
The VOTW is something sent in to the VOTW crew here at d.ca who then choose whether the video is going to be VOTW and when, who post it to the VOTW youtube page.

I'm down to edit it. I have a fair bit of experience editing. My only worry, is that I don't have great internet, and as such, downloading footage people upload might be a pain... Other than that, I should be able to do it.
