heh, if only. Unfortunately computers can't yet recognise what's in the picture well enough to know where the edges should be :) Photoshop has a function called "posterize" which does it very roughly which is helpful when doing some vectors but it's no substitute for doing it yourself. n3mo's right when he says it takes time - the last one I did (here) had really complicated hair and that alone took me 4 hours or so... the whole rest of the was only about 2 hours (edit: actually, thinking about it, it was more like 3 or 4) or so combined.

There's a post a few pages back where I explained how to do it in photoshop... I've never used inkscape but I'd guess that the technique is similar. I think I might have a go with it myself actually.

Apologies for an enormous bump, but I just checked this site, and it's up now, though judging by the Lorem Ipsum on the front page and lack of content on the others, it's clearly still under construction. It looks like it's going to be a shop, but at the moment all it's got listed are Finesses and Circuses, with prices exactly the same as firetoys.

Since I don't know how much you know about photoshop, I'm just gonna write this as if you've never used it:
Photoshop has these things called vector shapes, which you create by adding points round the edge of an area of colour and adjusting the  "handles" on the points to change the curves between it and the points either side of it, until the shape perfectly matches the area you're surrounding. (If you use photoshop, it's done with the pen tool, and you have to select the vector shapes option, which is the first of the three icons in the top left of the toolbar, which are vector shape, path, and fill respectively). Then you can just choose a colour for the shape - photoshop fills it for you. My images are done with lost of these shapes, one for each area of colour (drawn from a source photo, obviously). As a guide, that last one had 23 such shapes, plus the string, and it took about 4 hours or thereabouts. I add the details (such as the collar line on this one, and the chin on the first one) with thin black vector shapes with the layer opacity adjusted. The string is done differently since it's a long line rather than a shape; it's just a path which I've stroked with bright yellow using a small brush.

Again, if anyone wants one of these done for their pic, just drop me an email and I'll see what I can do :)

Apologies for bumping a relatively old thread, but I was just checking what the forum codes were for SMF, and noticed the [flash][/ flash] tags. Doesn't this mean it's possible to embed videos of the week (and other video tutorials, etc) into their respective threads? I think that would be a really cool addition to the site.

Brilliant post Sean - it's great to see a forum where these sorts of discussions are really acted upon. In my experience, that doesn't happen very often.

Perhaps it would be an idea to publish an email newsletter summarising the week's article(s) and videos and linking to their forum threads

I think that removal of spam threads is the way forward, and the procedure norbi proposes works well but may be a bit harsh. I think one problem is there's not always a mod there to spot these sorts of problems before the thread gets established (at which point a mod might hesitate to delete it, even if there's a perfectly good thread on the topic already). One way to enforce it better would be if any user could click a button to "flag" a post and alert the mods to whatever it is, be it spam, a pointless bump of a 2 year old thread (this happened earlier) or whatever, and then the mods could take a look at it. I don't know if it's possible to implement that though.

Once I was on a walk near my house with most my family and my uncle and cousins. Me and my brother were both diaboloing. So, we got to this bit where we were walking along with a lake on our right and a stream running parallel to the path on our left about 10m away.
So, I was just doing some normal tricks as we went along and decided that it would be a good idea to do a whip catch. I missed it, spectacularly: The diabolo hit the ground and hurtled off towards the stream. I ran after it, and saw it suddenly disappear off the bank into the stream. I tried to stop and ended up teetering on the edge of the bank, and had to jump in to fetch it out  >:(

I think it's where you catch the string and swing the stick round and then either slide your hand down the string or swing it back under the diabolo into a looper.

Chiok: Good point. Might be able to thread both ends of a small piece of metal (differently), one to screw into the wood and the other threaded for the extreme tips. Or trim down one of the plastic extreme attachments, but that'd probably break then. Anny other suggestions appreciated :)

Interesting - I've done something similar with a pair of handies before, but the tip broke.
I've been thinking about making my own custom wooden sticks for a whgile now, cause I prefer the feel of wood. I was thinking of taking a bit of beech dowel and threading the end so I could use MB extreme tips with them, and also getting a nice handgrip to go on the end. Haven't got around to it yet though - I can't get hold of any beech dowel around here, nor can I find a place that sells foam handgrips. Guess it'll have to wait...

I find you do have to be a bit more brutal to get a wide-axle diabolo into vertax. Seems to me it's cause you have to move the sticks further to get the string to rub on the cup, and so make it tilt. Once you're in excalibur it's not so bad, but it's a bit harder to correct/rescue.
