I entered last year, with a diabolo routine, it wasn't a very good routine compared to the standard of the majority of the people who post on diabolo.ca though (but its not all about skill, presentation will get you far as well!),and i didn't win anything, all the same it was still fun and a chance to perform/compete at the BJC, its like a proper show, so its cool to be involved with!

See you in Cornwall (hopefully)

Gear / How do you carry your diabolos around?
« on: January 12, 2006, 05:33:30 PM »
I managed to get a good backpack style juggling bag from a walking/outdoor shop, i actually took the stuff that i wanted to carry in the bag with me, and then the very helpful man got the bags that i liked the look of, and i put all my stuff in them, and choose the one that best suited my needs and kit. So you could always try that... :D

Community & Events / Diaboloing group near Devon, UK?
« on: August 23, 2005, 08:45:50 PM »
Hi Kev,

I'm in Devon, there is a good group of jugglers/diaboloists in Exeter, but the only time we meet properly is at the Exeter Uni club which usually happens on a wednesday night from 7-9 during term time, other than that we sometimes hook up and just have little sessions...on the Cathedral green for example, but they are hardly planned, lol. Email me if you wanna know anything specific: pang_matt@hotmail.com

Take it easy,

Yeah that is a wicked trick!

I thought this might be a good variation, although i reakon it would be really really hard to do, do mini colums behind the back but instead of over to one side do it so that each diabolo is either side of your body and they kinda pop up under your arms...if it only took you about an hour of practice to get that pretty down i reakon you may be able to get this with loadsa practice, rather you than me though, i can't even do normal mini colums, lol.

Rad trick though! Keep up the good work!

General / Visually Pleasing Or Impressive?
« on: June 10, 2005, 01:57:39 PM »
Hey Everyone,

Slightly Random post here, but i thought it might be an interesting discussion topic...

I was doing a little bit of diaboloing yesterday on the Cathedral Green where i practice sometimes, along with some other people who were doing various things of the juggling variety, and the topic came about as some diabolo styles being easy to watch, and enjoyable, and some being just so crazy and complex that its almost hard to watch...but very impressive.

So i was thinking to myself, are there different diaboloing "styles", very visually pleasing compared to some others which are less visually pleasing but very impressive. I guessed that a more visually pleasing style would flow very nicely from one combo to the next with suns etc. And a very impressive style would involve very difficult genocide and infinte suicide cominations, which doesn't SEEM to flow so easily due to catching sticks and things like that.

I suppose that this all leads back to the fact that laymen enjoy the much simpler tricks, and maybe don't enjoy the more complicated tricks because they can't get their heads around it?

So do you think that the majority of people prefer to watch something that looks very pretty and nice, rather than something that looks slightly less pretty but is very impressive?

Any thoughts?

Matt Pang

(This is a rather vague post i realise, lol)

Can i recommend the donald grant books, there are 5 in total i think, each one concentrating on different elemenst, e.g "Stick Grinds and Suicides" "Baffling Body moves and crazy Cradles" they were my source of tricks for a very long time when i started, and they are just wicked! You should be able to get them from butterfingers www.butterfingers.co.uk

Hope it helps!

Videos / 1D Leg orbit tricks/runs
« on: February 09, 2005, 04:17:29 PM »
For the throwing-the-stick-around-the-leg-making-a-loop  :P  Trick, you have to throw the stick around (over the top) your leg as you push the diabolo back under your leg after just catching it, you can either throw the stick on the inside of the string (side closest to your body) or the outside, depends what you prefer i guess.

Once you have caught the returning stick, which should come back from under your leg, the string should be wrapped around your leg, you then continue with the leg orbit, but when you next catch it, on the right side, you've gotta give it a little more of a push this time, so it travels inside the loop, and then it comes out on the left side of the string just as if you were doing normal leg orbits, and just continue with normal leg orbits, the only difference being that instead of the diabolo traveling under your leg after you catch it, it will loop around your leg in the loop of string!

Getting out of it is what i found most tricky, when you push the diabolo into the loop and it reaches about half way round, so its kinda above your leg, you let go of your right handstick and it will suicide out, then you are free to carry on with the leg orbits, or exit however you like...

Sorry, bit of a lengthy explanation there! Hope it helps though... :D
