Videos / 舞鈴高手 (Diabolo Dance)
« on: May 28, 2008, 02:00:18 AM »
Hey all, I just wanted to share a great video with everyone of the 舞鈴高手 (Diabolo Dance) group from Taiwan.
Here, they're performing at the recent Taiwanese presidential inauguration, doing a fantastic group performance.
There's flawless synchronization within this group of diaboloist (a large amount performing at once, over 10 on stage at several points) and it's certainly not one of those "run-of-the-mill" Taiwanese diabolo videos, so don't worry about simply seeing a boring 3D shuffle :p

I also wanted to add that this group has a variety of different performances, one of which I saw when they came over to the states during this past autumn, where they still have great group performances, but with different themes and songs for their audience to enjoy.

Anyways, enough of my bantering, here's the video:

EDIT:
Oh, I found a portion of that performance from fall 2007, enjoy!

Gear / When it breaks like this...
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:38:32 PM »

That's a type of Sundia diabolo, I don't think it has an English name, but it's basically like a Sundia Sun.
So that diabolo hit the floor one too many times and ended up splitting like so, and it recently got a huge crack down the side of the cup that's separated from the axle.

For the moment, I've somewhat fixed the crack by flaming it and sort of re-melding the plastic so it won't flop open, but the two cups are still separate.
I've attempted to use super glue, which failed, and the same flaming method, which didn't seem to be able to melt the axle at all.

Anybody got tips for repairal?

Gear / Any places that sell spare parts?
« on: February 14, 2008, 01:05:48 AM »
So over the time that I've possessed my various diabolo props (about a year ::)), I seemed to have misplaced a number of accessories for my finesses, and I was wondering if any of you knew of any places that sell spare parts?

I've recently sent an e-mail to Firetoys asking about this, but I probably won't get an e-mail for a while.

And in case you're wondering, I'm looking for: screws and rechargeable batteries for the finesse light kits, as well as a set of stuff for the normal axle (I usually use wide axles, so I've misplaced a normal axle >_>)

Videos / Because all the Chinese-Americans are doing it...
« on: February 12, 2008, 06:41:20 AM »
Yup. Another Chinese New Years performance video :P.

Before you start commenting, I do realize that this is the music Tempei uses, but I hadn't been aware of that when I chose the music, so please don't go on about the obvious :-\
And there isn't any real editing, I just cut out this bit from the entire performance, and the filming was done by my little sister, so it isn't going to be terribly well done.

And the umbrella bounce bit from the MFP, of course... That's just a necessity for a happy performance ;)

Videos / Quick Little Video...
« on: November 16, 2007, 11:58:34 PM »
Just a quick little video that's intended to be a promo video for a diabolo club I run at my school.
Nothing special, but it's the only video of myself that I have and I want to show it off to people ;D

Props to my friend, Bobby, who did all the filiming, photos, and putting the whole thing together.

Videos / Wes Peden - The Power is On
« on: September 01, 2007, 02:08:05 AM »
So I was watching some of Wes Peden's stuff - who is quite an extraordinary juggler - and I came across a video of all the different styles he does, one of which is diabolos.
And while watching it, I saw his diabolo juggling and saw a 2D Inifinite suicide that was in a sprinkler.
Wasn't too long since it was only about 4 rotations or so, but I thought it was still pretty cool.

Hope he doesn't mind me linking one of his videos...

Tricks / Horizontal Whip-like Trick? (umbrella)
« on: August 15, 2007, 07:30:58 PM »
Well this trick has had me stumped for quite awhile, as I've seen it done numerous times, and I have yet to understand how it works.

It looks sort of like a horizontal whip acceleration, except that it's at chest level and the sticks don't seem to cross each other.

I asked one of my friends how he does it, and he said it's just doing half of a crossed-stick sun on each side, but even after he showed me and told me, I still couldn't figure out what to do :-\

The diaboloist in this video does it at about 1:20ish

If I can find other videos, I'll edit this, but that's the only I can find at the moment.
I also think a number of people do this trick while in Vertax.

Gear / Re-using Equipment
« on: August 10, 2007, 10:53:37 PM »
So I've been diaboloing with various sticks and seeing which ones work best for me, but each pair of sticks usually breaks within a few months or so.

Now I've ended up with three sets of sticks where one stick is broken while the other is intact.
One pair is a long, white carbon fibre while the other two are short and black with one pair made of fibre glass and the remaining one is made of carbon fibre.

I really prefer not to spend more money on sticks when I have two good sticks that can be used together, so I decided to toss out the broken ones and leave the undamaged sticks for later use.
I've put together the two short sticks and now they work fine (except the fibreglass stick is a bit more bendy than the carbon stick).

I was wondering what you guys do with your stick when you break a set:
Do you guys just toss out the whole lot of them, or do you re-use the good ones like I've just written out?

Tricks / Vertax Stall/Pose Move? (motorbike)
« on: July 31, 2007, 11:59:43 PM »
Hi there,
I've been looking at a number of vertax videos, and I've come across an interesting trick that's been in a couple of the videos.
I've tried it, but I just don't understand how it works out.

In Ben L's PEH cup routine he does it, as well as in Jack Chen's.

This one (Ben's) the trick is done at about 1:49-1:50
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TE8mimNb2zY

And then in Jack's, it's at 1:44ish
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rOQsw2jE5qY

It looks like some sort of a wrap and involves grabbing the end without the sticks.

Help would be appreciated :)

Tricks / Trick Name Etymology?
« on: May 29, 2007, 04:26:27 PM »
So, there are a number of tricks that have a number of names that are obvious, since they describe the movement(s) of the diabolo while performing the trick.
For example, all the orbits/satellites have the diabolo revolving around the respective body part that the trick is named for. Or take 2D fans; the motion of the two diabolos rotating around portrays the motion of a fan's blades rotating around.

However, there are a number of tricks that have names that have always puzzled me, and ironically, they mostly seem to be -cide tricks.
Suicide, Tomicide, and Genocide are the main ones that I don't understand why they got named that way... It's not like you're killing yourself, or massacring a bunch of people for no apparent reason. And what does Tomicide even mean in the first place o_0, is it named after someone?

There's also excalibur, why is the trick named after that legendary sword that was pulled out of a stone?

Anybody else wondering why certain tricks are named the way they are? Or does anyone at least know why these tricks are named in such a way?

Tricks / Excalibur Exits
« on: March 05, 2007, 02:48:48 AM »
Hi, I've been trying out excalibur for a few weeks now, and I've been pretty succesful with getting into it and doing several tricks, but my main problem is exiting out of excalibur

I was wondering if anybody out there could give me a tip on how to exit excalibur smoothly, since the only times I've done so was out of pure dumb luck -_-

Thanks
