Practice / Back for the Summertime
« on: July 27, 2009, 07:47:59 PM »
I'm back if anyone remembers me.  I took a year long hiatus cause of school, other hobbies but mainly because I lost interest.  After coming on randomly and watching some videos a little while back I was inspired to start diaboloing again (the limits of diabolos have been pushed a ridiculous amount this past year...).  So this vid is just a coming back vid of some stuff from the past couple days of practice that I filmed.  I also threw in some stuff that I've learned over the past year at the end of the video.

Performances / Westwood Chinese Cultural Night - Diabolo
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:49:12 PM »
The Westwood Juggling Club creators, Matthew and Joshua (me), were invited to perform at the second annual Westwood Chinese Cultural Night. We used "Che" by Jay Chou. I apologize for some of our "antics" shall we say being hard to see but I hope you enjoy it.  We choregraphed it without the music so we had to loop the music.  A couple careless mistakes but overall we feel it was pretty decent.

Over the weekend I editted a highlights video of the entire performance so here it is if you wanna take a look.  There's some pretty sick stuff in there so yea...

Videos / Diabology 2
« on: April 01, 2008, 05:40:14 AM »
It's here!  The much anticipated sequel to the most popular diabolo video that has been released.  The Mad French Posse has come back and released a second video filled with new tricks in new locations.  After much work, Mister Babache has helped the Mad French Posse distribute 3000 copies to various stores.  Dvd's should arrive at stores on the 2nd.

Antonin, Trash, JiBe, Priam, Lutin, Eric, Tony, Baptiste, and Vux

9 diaboloists bringing 9 brand new videos featuring the Mad French Posse doing what they do best.  Antonin and Eric rocking all new one diabolo tricks, Priam innovating with 2 and 3 diabolos, and Tony using just way too many diabolos, these are just some of the new parts of Diabology II.

There also is a new instructional section with all new tutorials, stage performance of Sur le fil, and much much more.  Contact your local juggling store for your own copy today.

Happy April Fools Day.
Got you didn't I?  Please don't lynch me.

General / Diaboloists - MIA?
« on: February 27, 2008, 04:47:35 AM »
I was thinking about how some diaboloists have stopped diaboloing or gone "missing in action" like JiBe or Baptiste.  I was hoping to make a list of some of these people for a little project that I'm hoping that I could do.  I'll start the list off but if I named someone that is still active then could you correct me too?  thanks.

Pretty sure inactive List
JiBe, Baptiste, Remi
Less active:
Arjan, Norbi, Martijn
Unsure List
Bertrand, Dai

Tutorials / Tutorial - 42, 42*, 3*, fts 2-3
« on: February 24, 2008, 03:06:03 AM »
Well, I asked people what tutorial they wanted and I decided to do a tutorial of 42,42*, 3*, and feed the sun 2-3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0drpHmSjrKA

I cover the basic steps w/ slow mo and instructions.  Hopefully it's clear.  I didn't go outside because I was sick while filming this and windows media player absolutely blows so the editing isn't great.  Can anyone recommend a good free editing program that isn't too hard to figure out?  Thanks.

Tricks / Who wants a tutorial on anything (that I can do >.>)?
« on: February 20, 2008, 05:01:40 AM »
As the topic says, I'm going to make a tutorial on how to do any trick that you want, that I can do reasonably well so don't be like tutorial on fts 1-2-3-4!?!?!  or don't ask for a tutorial on how to eat ice cream.  I have a week of vacation and am kinda sick but still able to diabolo.  If you are unsure about if I can do the trick just ask and I'll see.

Performances / Chinese New Year Performance
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:12:05 AM »
This is my performance of Diabolo for my chinese school. I did it to Jay Chou's "Che". I did forget a bit to the beginning of my routine due to my nerves and I dropped on a knot that was stupid and I messed up on a transfer to fan but overall I feel it was a decent performance.

The very beginning w/ my two friends (richard and jason) are choreographed with the music.  Basically in the music they make a joke about the sound that chinese yoyo makes but it's kinda hard to explain.  Anyways, here it is.

General / Controversy of diabolo styles
« on: November 01, 2007, 12:32:37 AM »
I was looking at how people were reacting to my new video and there were some positive some negative.  I'm suprised at how much controversy that my video has caused, especially on www.giocoleria.org.  Even though I don't speak italian, I've used a translator to get the basic gist of the conversation.  One side says that my tricks are boring and that it's all been done before.  The other says that it's technically good.

I feel that if there weren't diaboloists that were technically proficent then the room for the creativeness would be much lower.  When Guy (I think he was the first to do 3...)  did 3 diabolos, that opened the door for so many new tricks.  People claimed that 3 diabolos was a fad and that all 3 diabolo tricks were inferior to 2 diabolo and 1 diabolo combos.  I think that's completely bogus, I mean, there are beautiful 3 diabolo tricks i.e.  Jacob's feed the sun combos, Tahia's box, William's crazy 3 diabolo sun to armstall work.  Why can't people who like 3 diabolo tricks get the same credit and appreciation as people who work 2 and 1?  I feel that as people get more and more comfortable with 3 diabolos, it'll become the new "2 diabolo" and people working on 4 will get flamed.

Technical diaboloists aren't just generic diaboloists, they can push the boundaries of diabolo further and further causing more opportunities.  If we didn't push the boundaries, we'd still be doing only one diabolo and have never even heard of vertax.  I know my video didn't quite push the boundaries very far or even at all.  I feel that though I can keep working on it like many other diaboloists to increase the variety of tricks that can be done with 3 diabolos.

Some people have called it boring and stale.  Some people have flamed vertax for basically no reason at all despite the fact that vertax passing is often praised but I don't want to digress.  I remember back when I started that 1 diabolo combos were all the rage and all the combos look vaguely like antonin or vux.  Wouldn't that be boring to watch too or are people just hating on 3 diabolos?

I just needed to get that out there.  *mutters and let the flaming begin...

Here's the newest video by me and mithew with some tricks that we learned over the summer.  Some were submitted for the collab video but they didn't make the cut, some were cool tricks, and some were plain freaking hard.  I hope you enjoy the video.

About 6 months ago Wes Peden posted a video of him diaboloing on youtube which I found today.  He's really quite good.  He has a really 2 diabolo trick and you'll know which one I'm talking about when you watch it.

Videos / Diabolo in anime
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:05:19 PM »
I was watching Prince of Tennis and every once in a while, they have chibi (style of drawing anime) episodes with stories purely for humor.  Also they had a juggler and a diaboloist.

Just skip ahead a bit to see it.  I guess diabolo is becoming more popular?  Anyone in japan wanna confirm my statement?

Tricks / 3 diabolo basics help
« on: September 20, 2006, 01:55:24 AM »
Ok, so I have a solid synch shuffle and a decent asynch shuffle and am working on most the basic 3 diabolo stuff: 42, wrap acceleration, sun, around the leg, 441, 3 low -> 3 high.

42: I've gotten it before but I need to solidify it.  Does anyone have tips on hand movement or where to look during when you pop up the 4?  Cause if I look up then sometimes the 2 below drop off the string, and if I look down then I'm not too sure where the third one is.  Should I lower the 4?

Wrap acceleration: I'm hopeless at this....  Any advice for a synch wrap or asynch wrap is welcomed.

Sun: I've gotten close to it before.  The tip that really helped was to pull with my left hand (I'm a righty).  Tahia or basically anyone with a 3 sun can help.

Around the Leg: I've gotten this quite solid now.

441: I've gotten it a couple times.  However the problem is when the first 4 comes back down, the "1" pops up and falls off.  It's hard to control.  Any advice?

3 low -> 3 high:  My 3 high sucks.  Did anyone learn 3 high like this or is learning a trapzee or regular throwing start easier?  Any advice for 3 high?

Thanks for the help in advance, and sorry for the long post.

Diabolo.ca Policy & Feedback / New Forum setup
« on: September 20, 2006, 01:33:37 AM »
Hey finally Sean switched to the new setup!  I think it's really nice but it just needs to be categorezied ;)  Any thoughts about it?

I think that once it's organized, it'll be alot more efficient.  Less work for you mods lol.  However I can't find the smileys anymore which makes me sad lol.  Anyways, Sean, this is time well spent, in my opinion!

Performing / Diaboloist vs Non Diaboloist Crowds
« on: August 21, 2006, 05:03:14 AM »
I was looking through youtube and google video sites for diabolo videos.  I saw many videos of people doing elevators, high throws, nothing very hard techincally speaking but had high ratings of 4 or 5.  Also I saw a short clip of someone running 3 decently long which had a rating of 2 stars but this is much techinically harder.

Also I found a site of a person who is supposedly a very good and I watched his diabolo routine and it consisted of a few sattelites, elevator high toss variations, and magic knots.  And he got applause and people said he was very good.

I think this type of diaboloing is not beneficial as it's as Jason Garfield put it, " using the minimal amount of skill" and I don't think that's very good for educating the world of diaboloing and what can actually be done with it.  It'll always be associated with clowns and circuses (not that im saying it's bad but people want you to wear spandex and you to do the whole clown routine *shudders)

I don't begrude you if you do an elevator in your routine but I think it should be coupled with something that shows some thing that can be accomoplished if you practiced and tried to do with diabolo instead of just doing a few simple moves that doesn't even scratch the surface of what can be do with a diabolo.

Maybe Jason Garfield had it right?  I don't know.  Any thoughts or questions?
