Videos / One more
« on: July 13, 2014, 09:00:00 PM »
Almost forgot to post this here too.

Mikah and me have been making videos since 2009. I haven't been practicing for years and have literally learned two new tricks since 2011. But we thought that that shouldn't stop us from doing another video, so here is one more video... Possibly the last, who knows? In any case, Mikah did an awesome job, as always!

Videos / Terrible Love
« on: June 18, 2011, 01:02:19 AM »
Long time no post.

I entered the Madskillz Vancouver video contest with Mike Sharkey to promote the festival. Here's my entry: 2011 Madskillz Vancouver: Flow Juggle Spin Festival CONTEST ENTRY [Jesse Gehlen]

I have been incredibly lazy this past year, so there aren't many new tricks, but hope someone will find it interesting.

Also, I believe this is the first time the Vertigo shot was used in diabolo video history.  8)

Videos / Out of Practice
« on: March 06, 2010, 07:46:07 AM »
I have mixed feelings about posting this. I really didn't want to make a video as I'm severely out of practice and have barely touched my diabolos in the past two months. I have nothing new to share and I wanted to wait until I had something worth sharing before making any new videos.

However, Mike wanted to test his new camera, so I agreed to do some tricks for him. He edited it into a full video and the quality amazed me, which is the reason I have decided to post this. No effects were added in post, it's all lenses and filters. The filming is pretty amazing. Thank you, Mike.

Practice / To Fix the Boredom in My Head
« on: December 30, 2009, 02:10:35 AM »
Went to Vernon to check out the snow. What a disappointment! Decided to film my practice sessions today and yesterday and do a short practice video. Tried a few new things and some of it clearly doesn't work. Anyway here ya go, don't take it too seriously:

Videos / Put Together Beautifully
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:52:01 PM »
Here's a new video that features sloppy tricks and insanely good videography. My friend Mike Sharkey did all the work while I goofed around. Hope you guys enjoy it. If you're looking for a video with insane skills, go away.

Ps. Sorry about the vertax gen. Mike did this for free and his only request was "do that crazy swirly thing". Couldn't really refuse.

I think a separate section for practice videos would be a good idea. The way it would work is that people could post videos of a particular trick or tricks that they're working on and need help with and then others could help them. I know a lot of people don't want to watch practice videos, but if there's a separate section then they could just ignore it.

What do you guys think? I think it would be helpful.

General / Anyone else having wrist problems?
« on: November 09, 2008, 03:19:48 PM »
My wrist is killing me. It's my non-dominant hand and I've had problems with it for as long as I've done diabolo. Usually it doesn't bother me, but every now and then my left wrist hurts a bit. Usually it's not bad enough to be a problem, but now I'm really concerned about it. It was a bit sore the other day before I started my diabolo session, but during that session I managed to make it much worse. Now it's so bad that I don't want to do anything juggling related, because I don't want to make it worse.

The reason I'm posting this here, is because I want to know if this is a usual diabolo related problem or is it something else. So, has anyone else had similar problems? I think I'm going to see the doctor anywho...

General / Ambidextrous Diabolo
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:56:04 PM »
So I've been thinking about ambidextrous diaboloing recently. I actually experimented with it a bit last summer, but finally came to the conclusion that it might not be worth it. I experimented a lot with left-handed two high and learned it pretty fast. There's some interesting stuff that I came up with, like half-pirouettes and such. I also thought that there might be some interesting stuff to come up with when having two diabolos spinning in opposite directions. All in all though I think that the work needed to learn diaboloing both ways is too time consuming and might not be worth it. But I decided to create this topic to see if anyone has any ideas concerning this idea.

Any thoughts?

mod edit
I just finished editing fdc stuff from my camera. The videos can be found
from Circus Rubberducks website, www.kumiankka.com but to make it easy
for you i'll put down direct links for youtube.

The first one is the diabolothon special. There was seven different diabolosports
but i shot just three of them. The sports were long jump, 160m vertax, 30m 2 diabolos,
diabolo golf, the longest grind, skipping and javelin throw (throwing sticks).

Second is montage of the whole thing, sorry no english translations for the small speeches.
Third is the open stage montage. And finally two performances from the galashow. I cannot
publish the rest of the galashow without permission of the performers. But there's a lot of material
on these five videos, have fun.

Videos / My diabolo video "So"
« on: July 31, 2006, 08:40:58 PM »
Here's my first attempt at a diabolo video. It's mostly 1d stuff, because I'm not very good at 2d yet. So if you're looking for new and innovating 2d tricks this video is not for you. There should be at least some interesting 1d combos though and I tried to make the video interesting with a lot of different backgrounds.

I had a really hard time making the video small enough. I use Adobe Premier and the first time I did it it was 1GB, then I tried the program Sean recommended in another topic, but it didn't work with my file. Then I tried Virtual Dub, but couldn't get it working. Then I tried to make another Adobe Premier file and I got it a smaller. Then I tried the program again and it worked. I think it's a reasonable size now. The only problem is the parts where I used slow motion seem to have lost quality quite a bit, but other than that I'm pleased with the quality. Not as good as the 1GB file, but who would want to download that?  :?

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79FVk0ztNqw

Enjoy!! (and keep in mind that this is my first video, so my skills are still developing   )

Tricks / Weird hovering problem?
« on: July 18, 2006, 04:12:32 AM »
I searched for similar topics, but couldn't find one. I apologize if this should've gone somewhere else.

I have a really weird hover problem. Doesn't matter how hard I do it the diabolo eventually starts falling down and hits the other one, if I don't unwrap fast enough that is. So my hovers end up being really short. I usually speed up using chinese accelerations. But I thought that hovering would be a good thing to do as well. I've watched videos of people doing it and everyone seems to be able to do it really calm. I have to do it so fast that it hurts my arm and still it doesn't stay up like it's supposed to.  :?  I'm embarassed about this problem so I haven't posted it before, but now after having this problem for months I decided to ask for help, as it is a basic 2d thing.

I use Henry's Circuses and I have the ultra-light kit. I used to use Henry's yellow string, but then I thought that the problem was that the sting was too slippery. So I went to the hardware store and bought some plain white string to solve the problem. Well this string is not slippery. But for some weird reason I still have the same hovering problem.  :(  Sticks probably don't matter, but just in case they do I'll tell ya'll what sticks I use. Henry's aluminum and the handles have a little bit of yellow duckt tape on them.

As I said before chinese accelerations give me the speed I need for my 2d tricks, but hovering gives a nice break so I would be happy to solve the problem. Also it's such a basic 2d thing that it is really embarassing not being able to do it properly   . Any help would be highly appreciated.
