Technical / Nikon D3200: yay or nay for filming a diabolo vid?
« on: August 09, 2012, 11:32:22 PM »
Hey peeps! Hope this place is still alive, last time I was at BJC it sounded like .ca was dying… I don't come here often but I do like it, so I hope it stays alive :S

Anyways! I've been looking to get a pretty decent camera recently, partly for the purpose of possibly doing a diabolo video at some point in the future. (though I do want to use it for other stuff the diabolo thing is a big reason I want to get a decent camera)

I've been primarily looking at entry-level DSLR's, and more recently the Nikon D3200 in particular, which I'm now seriously considering getting.

Would this be a good choice, particularly considering videoing diabolo stuff? Is there a better option I could consider (bearing in mind about £500 is quite close to the top of my budget, though it can stretch a little further)? Thanks for any help anyone can give ^_^

Tricks / Vertax tricks?
« on: March 27, 2012, 12:41:34 PM »
Hello everyone! Haven't posted here in a while but I was wandering a bit about vertax…

I'm able to do Vertax fairly solidly, can do a couple of tricks and am currently working on vertax genocide, but I haven't really been able to get much info on tricks beyond that point; magic knots, 'grinds' (if thats what they're called when people spin the diabolo on the tip of their sticks…), etc.

I was wandering where I could get more info on how to do these tricks? Videos/tutorials would also be immensely helpful.

Thanks! :D

Performances / Re: Cuddle Fuddle - Iñigo San Jose

Good stuff! Crowd certainly went ape-**** over that one :P

If I may, I have a couple of constructive criticisms to make to bear in mind if you perform again...

1) While the initial 1d stuff was very impressive, I think the audience got a little bit tired of watching so many suicide tricks. Sure they were all different suicide tricks but the audience can't tell that! I'd say have the suicide tricks around the ending of the 1d bit (before you move onto 2d/excalibur diaboloing, both of which brought in good amounts of variety), say maybe 1 complex suicide... thing (the technical term escapes me XD), 1 infinite suicide and 1 genocide for a big finish on the 1d part of the performance - the rest of it fill with different varieties of tricks! It doesn't matter if it's really easy tricks (say, suns), but the variety needs to take priority to the difficulty of tricks!

2) Interact with the crowd a bit more! While the crowd certainly were very enthusiastic in this performance, it isn't always the case unfortunately, and knowing how to liven up a crowd is very important! Allowing time to simply let the audience applause is important, as is making sure they know when to applause - a couple of exams where you might just wait for applause are when you did the behind-the-back eiffel tower (just look at the audience, smile, and hold that for about 3-5 seconds, depending on the level of audience reaction), and the infinite suicide (since you have a hand open during that trick, its good to point at the diabolo and kinda have a "yeah check this **** out" look on your face while doing this :P). Moving about the stage more can help too! For example, while doing excalibur, walking around in a circle is a good way to disguise the fact that you need to consistently turn to let the trick work.

Still, I'd say overall a fantastic performance! The audience liked it, it looked like you liked it too, and those are the important parts. Well done! :)

Brilliant as ever guys! Bravo to all of you :)

Wish I was that good at diabolo... I'll catch up one day I swear it!

Still need to watch it a few more times to pick out my favourite tricks...

In the meantime, consider this vid featured on JTV ^_^

Merry Christmas to everyone!

SHIIIIIT I have 4 days left to film something!

Gotta go find someone to help me film! AAAAAAAAAHHHH!

Also, is it ok if I use an iPhone 4's camera? I know it's a mobile phone camera but it does shoot in 720p and the quality is pretty damned good...

Right, being half Japanese (and bilingual), I've had a look at the video description on the Youtube page...

It definitely does appear to be a movie based around juggling, but it's plot is a bit weird  :o

Basically, it's about this guy (by the name of Yusaku) who started street performing at university, but went into the world of employment, and gave up. He's unhappy about his job, and frequently thinks about returning to performing but can't quite get himself to do so...

When, one day, all of a sudden, a ghost (named Mai), comes along into his life, which begins to change things...

...Kinda weird but from the perspective of a person who understands what they're all saying, I think it kinda looks cool XD

Tricks / infinite suicide into magic knot... AAAAH!
« on: October 05, 2010, 12:26:12 AM »
Hi everyone, I don't really post on here much, but... well, I kinda need help.

Basically, I've been trying to get the hang of infinite suicide into a basic magic knot outing... however, I've hit a wall in the fact that the string keeps missing the diabolo! Once I try and enter the magic knot, the string will go over the handstick fine and dandy, but then I continually fail to make it then go under the diabolo and thus complete the knot, it just goes round the stick again!

Does anyone have any tips on how I could solve this issue? Thanks to any help anyone can give! :)

Tricks / beginner 2D tricks...
« on: June 13, 2010, 11:36:45 PM »
Hi there everyone!

I've been practicing 2D for a while now, and I can do a solid shuffle and all, but I've been struggling when it comes to actually doing some tricks...

I think that part of the reason is that I don't really know what to start with, I've been kinda toying with all sorts of tricks like under the arm, fans, sprinklers, etc, but I don't really know which to focus on.

Can anyone tell me what would be a good trick to focus on first, then move on from there?

Thanks for any help anyone can give! :D

This is easily the most awesome thing I have seen in a while.

I think I might try it out too!

Just wandering, does it work with bearing diabolo's? Cause it looks to me like it would only really work with fixed axle..

As pretty much everyone else has said here already, that 2D trick was very neat indeed!

What are the songs called btw?

I reckon this one should be featured on front page! ^_^

Performing / Re: Street performance: NO ONE STOPPED TO WATCH!
« on: December 24, 2009, 12:18:17 AM »
make lots of jokes, smile, interact with the crowd - when street performing, its less about the cool tricks and more about saying "hey, look at this, its COOL!"

Also, if your looking for money its also good to make jokes about that too.

Some good lines that I've heard that seem to work:

"we are not payed by the council, the government, or any other criminal organisation!"
"if you see my eyes bulge out and become big... yeah, thats called 'fear'."

etc etc.

Also, spontaneous jokes depending on situations work really well too - I once saw a puppy running across the blokes performing area and he started barking at it!
