Tricks / Diabology and speed ups?
« on: March 29, 2005, 09:25:56 AM »
As an answer to the string wrap question, what you're basically doing in all 3 methods (right wrap, wrapped orbits and chinese whipping) is the same. In my experience, doing a right wrap seems to cause the diabolo to catch on the string and roll up more than the other methods, but since they all use the same basic principle, you should get a fairly similar amount of speed from them.

I find orbits much more natural to do than either of the other methods. It's mainly a matter of personal preference, but orbits and chinese whips look much better than right wraps. The choice is yours!

Is a trapeze not the same as a stopover? :?

Yeah, then you might have a chance to get out the way before it hits you in the face.

I'm speechless. That performance is fantastic! That must have taken some serious practice, or some serious natural talent - probably a bit of both :)

Oh, and that is a very silly hat

If you want to look like a true diaboloist, simply attatch razor blades to the diabolo of your choice and aim at your arm. Authentic cuts in seconds!

Hope that helps

I do not in any way, shape or form take any responsibility for any loss of arm/life this technique may cause.

Nice one seán_

Not as many opportunities for diabolo T-shirt slogans as juggling T-shirt slogans, because of all the ball jokes :) but maybe we could get some more ideas? What about:

"Diaboloists: breaking household objects since ancient China"

"Diaboloing: juggling with less balls"

"Is that a Henry's ally stick in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?"

Sorry, couldn't resist that last one

Nice videos - I really like your style.

I also had trouble downloading the videos in Firefox, but it's still a quality program compared to IE. Don't surrender to the dark side

OK I understand now.  Just showing off  :P

The transfers do make the trick look more difficult, which is always good.

Nice trick! I can't even begin to work out how many wraps and stuff are on each diabolo there. As for a name.... I'm clueless. Well it is 8:00 in the morning  :)

I think the siteswap for both a cascade and half shower are 333, the difference being that in a half shower one person always throws under the diabolo thrown by the other person and the other throws over, whereas in a cascade all throws are made under.

The trouble with a cascade is, as you can see in ball juggling, one hand catches on the left and throws on the right, and one catches on the right and throws on the left. This is the same with diabolo, so one person will be continually catching the diabolo and rolling it down the string the wrong way so it loses speed, while the other is speeding it up. With a half shower, all catches are made on the right and throws on the left, therefore you can keep the diabolos going longer since both people are speeding them up.

Hope this clears a few things up

From what I can see, that looks like a great trick, but I can't really see what you're doing :(  Would you mind filming it again? :P

That's a truly amazing video - the average skill level at the WJF seems to have been beyond belief. Too much good stuff there to pick out seperate bits - it was nice to see a bit of the prelim rounds as well, see what it was like for us mere mortals who didn't make it to Vegas

(Did I see some Dance Dance Revolution there with Sean? )

General / Possible Diabolo trick search engine...
« on: February 04, 2005, 06:14:21 PM »
I think the advanced search option is the key point to this. As I said before, it would be great for combos to be able to find different tricks that start and end exactly where you want them to - for example, if you searched for a trick from a left backwrap to open string, it would come up with a single fritz release, double fritz release, cross arm toss, etc.  The other points are just extensions of the layout of .

Great idea - if Jim agrees it would be even better. I also like the idea of the style rating :)

The Oddballs ( ) shop in London has some; I went there a few days ago, but doesn't seem to have it on their website. They have a shop in London and one in Brighton I think.

Great video - especially the string climb to finger grind, the sprinkler combo thing and the last trick.... how I need those finesse g2s :P

Every time I see a video of you, you're always doing pretty much exactly the tricks I want to be able to do - just as I think I've almost learned everything I wanted to learn, along comes another video to show me how bad I really am  Diabolo has taken a back seat in the last week or two as I've almost got the five ball cascade (best I've done is 7 catches but I'm still optimistic) - maybe it's time to get back to learning some more diabolo :)

Yes I did have that key positions thing in mind. There could be a main page with loads of key positions on, and when you clicked on each position there would be a list of tricks to do from that position, and which position that trick ended up in. Now all we need is someone with a lot of time on their hands.... any volunteers? :)
