General / Possible Diabolo trick search engine...
« on: February 03, 2005, 10:21:53 PM »
Ok, in another thread there was some discussion of whether it would be possible to create a sort of tricks search engine. See here:

so i knocked up a quick hi-res prototype so people could see what i was suggesting. it lives at and i have to add that i've borrowed some info and an animation off i'm sorry about that and all content will be original or posted with consent in the real version

bear in mind that it doesn't actually work at the moment, all you'll get are static pages... so what i'm really looking for are any comments on what functionality you'd like to see, different information you'd like to see displayed, and ideally whether anyone is willing to help write the information...

also note (for seán_) all ratings/scores would be based on votes so if you disagree with them then you can change them.

hmmm... i could ressurect the idea i suppose... i'd need a fair amount of help, more with the curating than with the programming though, i'm a comp sci student so it should just count as some fun practice.

If anyone else is interested and has any ideas then either post them here (though this thread is veering off topic) or message me.

what i debated making (as a bit of a test of my web programming skils) at one point was a sort've tricks search engine where you could put in things like what state the string is in at the start and finish and roughly how difficult it is to learn... alongside normal search by name... it could link to for explanations or whatever and also let people submit new tricks information... it wouldn't be hard to do really, don't suppose it would ever get used though

ace trick! i just tried it and nearly lost a tooth though... i also failed to heed the glasses warning at the end so my handstick's left a nice black smear accross one lense.

sean, if you need another mirror in future then let me know, i have a lot of bandwidth going unused at the moment

i've not tried it yet but i think i will... i've now got a dirty line round one cup of my diabolo where i've bled on it as it's been grinding... :?

great style!! i wish i could be that smooth... i tend to end up looking like i'm attacking the diabolo, not playing with it  :D i actually quite like the idea of the single background... how long did it take to film the clips?

i can sympethise about the neck bounce and finger grind injries, i'm currently sporting a few of my own... at the minute some of the most painful ones i have are friction burns/cuts from doing solid loop tricks... they sting

i've just taught myself finger grinds with a circus... once i really thought about it it only took about a half hour to get down.

The keys (as i see them) are to:

a.) make sure the diabolo lands between two knuckles rather than on one, this stops the diabolo gripping your skin as it lands and either giving you nasty friction burns or pinging off your hand copmpletely.

b.) make sure you get your finger lined up perfectly with the axle, if you don't then the diabolo will begin to wobble and thus tend to grip your hand and fly off.

c.) get the angle of your hand right. I tend to try an angle around 45 degrees and then tilt my hand back towards horizontal if it's too much

d.) persevere, the catching action isn't quite what i expected so i suspect it mightn't be what you anticipate either.

that's about it, hope it helps.

bloody hell... i've just used my swanky new Henry's circuses for the first time (about 2 hours use) and they're already dirtier than my old diabolo got in 6 months... crazy

i learned recently that if you decide to do underleg orbits in shorts that you have to be careful to stop the string rubbing... i still have a scar where it did a cheesewire job on the inside of my knee

cheers to both!

it looks like a really useful site... who knows, maybe i'll actually get better at this now :)

You don't seem to be able to go anywhere on the web these days without running into b3tans though barnsey... which probably says something terrible about society in general
