Tricks / Re: How do you keep a record of new tricks/ideas?
« on: February 11, 2023, 07:37:11 PM »
I used to just draw really crude pictures of ideas (on post-its so it had to be crude). If I was doing it nowadays I would film it while explaining to myself but also write it down (studies have shown that you remember stuff better that way).

Honestly so much easier for people to practice today with all the tools on hand.

Liking it a lot aesthetically. Music goes well with it and the shot from above (very nice choice to just go with the one shot from above) with soft image and darkened corners. A bit of a "surreal" feeling watching it.👍

« on: September 09, 2021, 12:00:39 PM »
i see one diabolo circus show  team who use  it is it i think
in this video they are use machine throwing diabolos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPtoo1MP2GE

That is cool. I remember an old discussion about this same topic. Back then the best self-starting machine I had seen was a guy from Japan who had a wooden springy board (which he stepped on) loaded with one diabolo. That compared to this... Miles apart.

Off topic I also liked some of those duo trick ideas. Is there a thread on that already (tricks involving more than one person)?

I'm New / Re: Practicing Indoors?
« on: September 09, 2021, 11:46:19 AM »
If you're practicing at home, you should practice on a carpet if possible, because otherwise you will probably damage the floor, especially if you are using diabolos made of harder plastic.

For sure carpet. Also helps with the sound of the drops (kills ears in a confined area). Larger mat preferred and make sure it doesn't move (you want to get the feel of moving physically with the diabolo but you don't want the carpet to slip out from under you when you do that).

A "small" bump but what happened to this function (I can't find it anymore and had a bunch of threads saved)?

I'm New / Re: Practicing Indoors?

Been out of real practice for a LONG time but practiced most of my time in my hallway when I lived at home so I feel suited to answer.

Do you have space to the side? Regular ceiling height or more room? You could put cardboard against the walls to not smash them up too bad.

Dk your exact level but slackstuff works well indoors (any yoyostyle trick). Some suicides and integrals (if you have the height/width required). Bodycombos work (I learned between/over the leg bounces in my hallway). Multiple diabolos and string control tricks ofcourse. If you can do two diabolos ("relative beginner"?) then there are quite a few tricks that can be done. Stopovers/infinite backwraps, vortex, slacks, suns, grinds you name it.

...

Been a loooooong while since I wrote here (I still lurk now and then). Anyway the idea is good but it could prove difficult to change generally accepted/understood terminology completely "just like that".

You could always do what I do and just shorten the tricknames when talking to non-diabolists(?). Suicide = "sui" and genocide = "geno" (like Jannis above). I've admittedly never done that to censor myself but rather because I'm lazy and two syllables is less than three-four. End result remains the same.

Feels a little like a diabolo version of cone (on a much grander scale ofcourse) with that much more sense of weightlessness:

^Removed embedlink to not detract from opening post. Would REALLY like to see this on stage. Extending the tricks over the heads of the audience for more immersion. Possible assistant help for added possibilities. Just a great idea.

Video full of great sequences. I most enjoyed the stick throw + fake (ball juggling swiped) and the throws at 6:04. Simple ideas, flawless execution and looks great. Style for days.

Eh? What controversy could you possibly get from this? I must be missing something.

I like it overall. Especially no fancy clothing just dark "normal" clothes and no intrusive music = good tricks in focus (last one was great; gonna try to steal it). Feels very much like a jugglers routine.

03:25 is a great trick. Actually learnt that one from you in a previous video (not seen anyone else does it that slow and floaty. Makes it easier to see and appreciate).

Edit: Maybe worth pointing out that "juggler's routine" quote was meant as praise not critcism.

Gear / Re: How often do you buy new diabolos?
« on: August 21, 2018, 09:38:41 AM »
Every now and then. Only because I want to try new models (even though I don't practice like before so it has been a while) because I'm pretty much "stuck" with diabigs, they're not made anymore (I have broken a couple granted that was the Yoho braned ones), and there are no other diabolists near me to borrow props to try from.  It's effectively "buy to try"...

once a car hit one of my diabolo capeta (a brazilian brand)

Is it good?

Works so well with just the tricks and the sound of the boards in the wind. Like...meditative to watch.

General / Re: Diabolos in dreams
« on: May 22, 2017, 07:09:00 PM »
Whoa some bump. I did dream about drowning in diabolos a long while back when I was practicing seriously. They just rained down from the heavens and hit me in the head while piling up on the ground around me and suffocating me. Having that dream while practicing a lot was like a badge of honor.

This looks very fun. Been away for a good while but have a number of loop stuff I've wanted to film for a long time (underappreciated category) and am a new S7 owner regarding smartphones being OK to use.

A few :P questions I'm unsure where to ask(?):

1. We are to show singular tricks? Or combos (with loop some stuff is combos leading into single picture tricks for instance)? Cool to show many tricks in a single tutorial (the competition is fun and prizes are extra motivation but I basically want to share the only thing I've somewhat kept up on the past years. Follow up question to that are these later publically listen on Youtube or website only)? Can it be a "category of tricks" crammed into a tutorial (limit of 3 á 15 minutes is not very long) or would that not be in depth enough?

2. Does it matter if the tricks/combos are dependant on certain props (have a few which pretty much requires short axles, bearings etc only to work)? Does it matter if they "require" gloves (they kind of don't but it would suck not having) and if so does it also need to show how to make them ("anything else you think might help someone learn this trick") or can that just be explained quickly audio only?

3. Among "extra things to film, extra drills or skills" would that include yoyo tricks etc as well as separate tricks (wouldn't know what to do to not bloat any clip endlessly in this case) or acceptable to just refer people to "check youtube" for those? Some movements are "prerequisite" or whatever the apt English word is.

4. Is there a suggested difficulty? The advanced section for loop on that website just shows, in my mind no offense to those jugglers, very basic stuff and the basic section already fails to include descriptions on knots etc? OK to provide additional videos as addendums to competition submissions for that later on (once it's finished or whenever)?

5. Regarding setting up the camera would it be fine if it differs for loop (giving 1-2 m above the head, ground in front of you and filming from so far away would probably make it a bit hard to see for this category. Some tricks are dependant on knot position)? Is location important (inside VS outside)?

6. Do I need to provide subtitles if my English is crap (it is but idk how to edit properly and add subs) or is heavy accent English fine? Do the edits need to be nice looking in any way or OK to just cut to black/next trick? Can the tricks be run at a decent speed and then would text be enough to explain (slowing down videos is not too hard)?

^I think that's it...sorry. :P

Really, really beautifully filmed stuff. Whoever edited these knows their stuff.
