Videos / Re: New Diabolo video: Waiting« on: June 30, 2009, 12:01:34 PM »Was pleasantly surprised by this one. I gotta admit, I was going to give this video a pass until I saw crackers' comment. smooth tricks, good flow, beautiful shots, what's not to like? 3

I think each of you would have been amazing had you never met each other. But being able to practice with and be inspired by each other pushes you both to mind blowing insanity. Amazing as always.

oh man, I had just come inside after a short practice session where I was practicing a one handed umbrella with stalls. since I kept screwing it up, and the weather looks pretty misreable too, I came inside and turned on my computer. I gotta admit I'm quite disheartened to see martijn pull off that trick so smoothly (the stalls are the part I find hardest to land right). video is awesome as usual.

your first video has been on my top 5 videos list since the day I saw it, now I gotta fit in LCAB 1.2 somehow as well. so much excellent material in both of them, I can't wait for your next release.

i saw the vid on jtv earlier today just before I went to work, and I just knew that when I got back and checked dca I'd find a thread with at least 2 dozen replies. You guys are jaw dropping amazing, I'm not sure though if I'm inspired or depressed. didn't mind the length at all, absolutely loved the vid.

General / Re: Creativity discussion« on: March 20, 2009, 09:57:56 PM »... more likely to focus on coming up with new tricks over performing. I'd like to add that somewhere between new tricks and complete routines are also short (or not so short) combos. Even if you don't perform professionally, you likely don't go through a normal practice session if there are friends/family watching, you're going to perform to some degree or another by showing off some tricks and combos. Creativity in combos can be just as rewarding as coming up with 'new tricks', and can even lead to creativity with individual tricks as you learn different ways to handle/perform the trick (ala modifications, as mentioned earlier). As an aside, I believe that truly new tricks may as well be a myth. Anything you come up with has been done before. All you can hope for is to be the first to document it. 9
Tricks / Re: Slow side mini genocide« on: March 19, 2009, 11:01:28 AM »
Not a class of tricks i've spent much time working on, but I have recently discovered that I can control which wrap I get by making sure the released stick comes around as straight as possible, and twitching the string you're holding either away from you or towards you just as the stick is about to pass it. I get more control that way then by releasing the stick at an angle.
hope that made sense, -dWb 10

I saw the first vid earlier today, and was so shocked I sent a link to all my non-juggling friends. The skills on display were just unbelievable. so jealous of everyone that was there.

That was cool for making me smile. Any plans to put together something 'meatier' with the revo kit?

Tricks / Re: practicing« on: February 26, 2009, 11:13:10 AM »
Learning new tricks/techniques comes in two phases for me. During phase one I (much like Sean) spend very little time on the trick before moving on. Really, all I'm trying to do get as many attempts as possible before frustration sets in. Being frustrated makes learning anything much much harder, and is a blatant waste of time. Some tricks don't need more than the first phase to become reliable, but for others I need an extra oomph.
Generally, phase two involves spending a much longer period doing only one trick (or 2-3 if they're related). Maybe up to about 30 minutes depending on my stamina and general state of mind. Depending on how well I'm doing I might repeat this every few days until I 'get it' or I get frustrated again and mentally put the trick back into the phase one box. When to switch from phase I to phase II? For me it's generally when I get a good enough 'feel' for the trick. I know how all the elements of the trick should 'feel' when I do it correctly. I've learned how individual elements feel right during phase I, and phase II is really about getting all the elements to feel right every time. Although it's not a fully conscious effort I do have a sort of mental checklist which helps me to understand why a failure occured. Not enough/too much tension on the string from off-hand to diabolo. Diabolo left string too early/late. Hands too close/far apart. etc. I guess phase one is really about figuring out that checklist. What are the most important elements of the trick, is it hand position, string tension, speed, etc. Once I have that, then spending more than 5 minutes on a trick becomes efficient practice, and not random flailing. On a side note, I have no idea how long you've been trying to learn a 2d fan, but although I have a semi-decent inventory of 2d tricks, if you were to know how long I've been trying to get a fan (any bloody fan) consistent you would probably wet yourself laughing. best I can do is 3 revolutions to sloppy exit. Any more and it all falls apart. I've gone back and forth between phases on this trick so many times it's not even funny. So, errr, yeah. Some people seem to learn fans first thing. I've seen quite a few 'my first vid' with shaky 2d shuffles who can't seem to do any tricks other than fans. I sit on the other side of the curve, fans just don't jive with me. -dWb 13

off-topic: my name is Oren too, and I grew up in a place called Omer. Not that cool, I know, but I do enjoy little coincidences like that.

sweet stuff
wish I had some high ceilings somewhere in the house. As it is, I have to be careful even doing some body combos with suns, stick releases are definitely a no-no. I really want to see how your revo+yoyo stuff evolves. Excellent video overall, makes me more than a little jealous ![]() -dWb 15

Although I had a severe case of manflu, which turned into full blown stay in bed flu over mon-tues, I had an awesome time. I ended up hanging out with mine posse doing a lot of clubs and balls and didn't actually meet any of you, but me and my brother had fun pointing out who we could recognize from various videos and being a bit starstruck. first time for us at anything like this, definitely not the last,

looks like I'll be coming to bristol for this one. I'd offer additional crash space since it looks like there might be need of somemore, but (a) it's not my space to offer, although that wouldn't be a problem except (b) it looks like i'm coming with a mini-posse of my own and they're all crashing at the same place too.
