Okay, here's last FDC2009 video - FDC2009 Inside a break

First video is downloadable now.

FDC videos are not coming to be on sale. Our festival can't afford all the music, or most of the people couldn't afford to buy the dvd's then. So no sale until we get festival big enough. ;)

So what's with the downloading?
Videos are on and you can watch them whenever you want. Why you want the files?

I'm not saying that I won't make them downloadable but can anyone explain? ;)

Tricks / Re: Copying new tricks

Practising and learning a trick isn't theft. Even performing a trick isn't theft.

It doesn't matter do you do it on video, live or in closet. It's same thing, not a crime.

Again compared to music, you can't claim note, you can't claim chord, you can claim a song, even that sounds strange? We western people don't even have so many notes, same structures keep popping up all the time.

People play other people songs anyway, and it's okay

Diabolowise we don't even have classic routines that people would like to perform.
jugglingwise there's no classic routines people have skill to perform. Francis Brunn's act is classic, I would love to be able to perform that but it's too difficult for me. Ignatov's act, Gatto's act, all classics.

It would be nice to see classics revisited. Maybe we could have Donald's act as classic. Practise and learn it but remember to say that you are performing one of rare classic diabolo acts in the world, Donald Grant's diabolo act done by (your name here)

That could really be nice project, or even competition, Donald as a judge. Best interpretation of classic diabolo act. Then our community  could make again one step further to be really a artform of it's own, with music, dance, literature, theatre...

No need to be sorry Elkku. You haven't done anything wrong. This conversation is pointless. There's no copyright law for tricks and even if the people who just want to claim everything to get reason for bitching, because of their lack of self confidence, want to have copyrights for tricks.

That's just sad. We're talking about tricks. For real 2d stick switch, come on. How unique that is? That's one of the most obvious moves you can think of. Who's first to claim 3d stick switch or 1d stick switch. Oh no nobody can claim those, it's that 2d guy's trick.

Openness and sharing has made diabolo to evolve. Not claiming or signature tricks. Even naming tricks by your own name is ****ed up. It's just for ego boost, nothing else.

It's not about age either or skill level or anything. Tricks are free, it's not even stealing, it's just things you really need to do.

Studying, playing, sharing, jamming are good things and should be encouraged instead of bashing. If everybody starts claim all the stuff and deny others even to try that, Diabolo juggling won't evolve in a way it does now. So please!

I ask honestly from to bottom of my heart that everybody stops claiming ****, We're just talking about tricks here. If somebody learns it, that's only good thing. There's even bigger change to get more tricks for you as well. Nobody loses. It's only win win deal.

I bet all of you know the story that there already would be cure for cancer without those patents in medical study. Which is more valuable claiming patents or cure for cancer?

BTW. What's the thing with claiming?
I don't really get it?
How you know who was the first? (to find the move?, to invent DA move? To publish it on video or internet, here on forum?, performed it first in competition?)

Sharing is good, that keeps diabolo evolving.

Nobody is really stealing routines, at least what I have seen, tricks are just tricks or moves or whatever. In music you can't claim a chord or note... what's the difference. I know I have stuff that I haven't seen other people do. Most of you propably could do it and even in a nicer way than I, but I'm not claiming it. I bet somewhere somebody has done it before or after me. I don't care, if the trick/move/transition/etc. is nice, it's nice. That's it.

I deffinitely take all that I like, maybe find something on my own but I really try to use what I see trickwise.

So what's up with the claiming? can someone explain?

Deffinitely it's not on same location with EJC2010, it's not same convention. It's FDC. How about a country sightseeing trip  thing in middle of these conventions? I bet it could be all fun boys. We could plan the sweetest ever Finland tour just for the diabolo posse coming to FDC.

First have EJC kind of fun in Joensuu, then relax, have fun, learn language for few days, Join SDS ( Finnish Diabolo Association) and compete at diabolothon. Then FDC 24/7 for some days. Sounds like total holiday plan.

Makkaraa ja karjalanpiirakkaa, ehkä säästämme mämmiäkin kaikille.

I know I'm not Marko but we considering few different dates for next FDC. Most propably next FDC will be 5. -8.8.2010 So when you come to EJC2010 you can spend few extra days in Finland and stay for next weekend when it's time for FDC2010. Real EJC diabolo after party. How about that? Doesn't it sound like a plan? ;)

General / Re: Is diabolo a sport?
« on: August 30, 2009, 11:10:49 AM »
Circus is not sport as itself. Circus is just defined space for different usually skill based disciplines. And it's main purpose is to entertain the real audience sharing the same space with performer live.

In trad. circus there are two main key elements for it.
1. It happens now, in front of live audience. It's real.
2.It's about tricks. Tricks can be difficult, easy, physical or witty, It's about tricks.

These rules are also reason why most of modern circus or contemporary circus doesn't really work. The biggest problem is usually that, they try to apply these two rules with rules of theatre and these rules doesn't fit together. When you have characters, plot, etc. You are taking away the rule about that it's happening now. You are trying to have illusion that it's happening somewhere else, and it takes lot away of the effects of the tricks and skills.

Sorry I went bit off-topic but Circus itself is not sport, skills performed in circus can be sport and usually are. They are just presented in different forum. This is my claim.

But in circus you can show basically anything, when you apply the two rules I explained. In the old days people showed movies in circus, they wrestled, had ballet acts, puppet theatre, tap dancing, anything.

Juggling is juggling, it can be sport, it can be circus, but for real it's juggling.

Never done HLGCBS, but I'll try to do it now for the first time ever.

Hanging out with amazing people. Seeing people having fun. Wonderful people sharing crazy tricks, Langerz, Crackers, Tom, Nev, Tommi, Marko, Jesse, Tonza, Aaro, Jussi, Maku, etc...

Galashow. It was so Twin peaks. Red wooden Building in middle of the forest with Red and black molton.

I didn't have time to diabolo. (learned few nice moves, thou)
Henry's new string. It didn't really help during gala performance.

See all the participants have fun. Check.

Crackers. I knew that his tricks would be crazy, but he's just too over the top than anyone can be. He's coming back next year. That's even more crazy.

Bane: Falling a sleep while GT's plane was leaving in two hours. I just couldn't stay awake any longer. Sorry GTom.

Surprise: Miro, I really started to like this kid a lot. We booked him for gala from Finnish juggling camp. Sweet act from supersweet kid. Thank you Miro for this.

Then here's complete list of galaperformers:
Langerz, Crackers, Miro, GTom, Kaitsu, Jesse, Tonza, Maku, Samuli, Aaro, Nev, Marko.

Well, For me the video was too long. Anyway it was great fun at NJC. See you at FDC. :-D

It's time for fourth FDC at Eräjärvi 31.7-2.8.2009!

Convention starts at Friday 10 am. and ends on sunday afternoon after Galashow. Between the beginning and the end of convention there will be at least open stage, trick jam, sauna, diabolothon, workshops, GH +RB, and some suprises as well.

FDC is organized by Supiainen and Kumiankka

More info on and

We are working with the schedule so it's not ready until all the small stuff is confirmed.

Convention place & stuff

Convention is held a gain in Eräjärvi due to it's quiet, peace and cheap spaces. There is a one shop, one restaurant and the convention place. Also a lake with the sauna. Sleeping happens in a school so bring your own sleeping bags with you. There's a small gym where the workshops and some shows happen. Also a small kitchen for making your food. Last year we served breakfast which might be the case for this year as well.

Bear in mind that this is a small convention which is concentrated on diabolo juggling. So almost everything is about diabolo. There will be again the diabolothon sports championships. We believe we'll see last year's winner Jouni Ihalainen defending his trophy this year as well.

Here's some things that might bother your mind about getting to convention place.

Connections (Airplane, ferry, trains, our car)

So Eräjärvi is a really small village 30minute drive to east from Tampere. Tampere has airport (Ryanair) so you can fly there and take a train to closer. More advisable is to contact the organizer so we can come and get you from the airport or Tampere.

People coming from west with the ferry over the sea (probably Sweden) should go to Turku first. And from there on with train to Tampere. Same with the foreigners who are coming first to Helsinki. Either by ferry or airplane. From Helsinki catch the train or bus to Tampere.

Once in Tampere it is fairly easy for us to come and get you by car. Or you can take a train to Orivesi which is a bigger town close by Eräjärvi. All the Finnish diabolo men & women are going there. And taking a lift to Eräjärvi.

If your arriving to any city in Finland, there might be a chance that some body from there is coming to convention. So it's much more easier to travel with locals or get a lift. If you're coming please contact us, we might be able to make things easier for you once you're here.

Ryan Air flights are really reasonable to Tampere. And if you are coming to FDC by plane. Just send message and we figure out how to get to convention place.

Propably we can give you lift. :)

Congratulations Aaro. Sweet. Von Herzen Brothers.

But what really made me smile was to see FDA's Diabolo Championship trophy on stage. That's big. Aaro is Finnish diabolo champion and now he's almost Norwegian Talent already.

Nice Finesse monobolo mod. (I think Marko was bit sceptic with it at EJC, good laughs thou :) )
