Gear / Rubber thing on Henry Alu Stick coming out
« on: September 10, 2005, 08:44:07 PM »
What is this rubber piece of which you speak?  I think I have Henry's alu, but they are only two pieces... alu, and foam handle grips.

Something becoming popular probably has a lot less to do with its inherent coolness and more to do with promotion.  Look at any of the "dumb fads;" pokemon, pogs, backstreet boys.  These things are all pretty dumb by themselves, but with the evil Nintendo Empire pushing the market, Backstreet became a household name.  (Diabolos are inherently cool though, and Stu doesn't seem as evil as Sega.)

MM has quite a few albums and side stuff like Ugly Cassanova.  Some of their stuff is cool for diabolo, but most of it is too dissonant to work with.  Where, besides sketchy internet sites, can I get a !!! album???

Alright, let's get this American scene going!  Matt Hall, you are hereby appointed to leader of TMAP.  We need a style all our own.

Stu, what kind of prizes will you give to the diabolo ladder winners?  I am thinking of organizing some sort of contest in my area.  Does anyone here belong to a "diabolo only" club?  I wonder if it would work without the other juggling props.  Not that I dislike them, it's just that I don't have enough skill with them to teach someone else.

Yeah, I guess Matt Hall is the definition of American Diabolo.  I'm far too removed from the American diabolo scene.  Who else is there?

J_J777, I'm no expert on comedy, but if the punchline isn't what I said, then I don't think it's there at all.   Chiok, Cheers back to you, what kind of name is that, if you don't mind me asking?

I think this will turn out well.  I do agree with the comments on the difficulty level and I understand the counterpoints.  For those that think it is too easy, what can you suggest to Stu about the last 4 to 5 tricks that might make the difficulty curve more steep there?  What tricks might weed out the absolute novice without being equipment governed. (X-grind is quite a pain)  With the last few tricks being more difficult, not everyone will complete the ladder, resulting in less tie breakers.  I like the idea of having structure to the learning order of tricks and "levels" just as in the yoyo scene.  I have been using something similar to this to help the kids I teach have a sense of accomplishment, although I don't have quite as many tricks in the first level.

I'm New / The next step? (advancing after first tricks)

That's a shame, I'm sorry to hear that you weren't pleased.  How about the audience, did they like it?  That sun in the face and strong wind is such a bother.  As a matter of fact, I used to complain about the wind so much, it has become somewhat of a joke to me and my girlfriend.  Whenever I do something and mess up, she laughs and says "Damn wind!"  Even if it's not diabolo that I'm doing.  I could be playing a video game and lose, and she'll say it.  :)   Eventually though, the wind becomes less of a problem, or at least it seems that way.  Hang in there and line up another perfomance as soon as you can. :)

My circus only came apart once since I took it apart.  I tightened it a little harder than I had the first time and it has held.

Try doing infinite suicides, and try learning 2D.  I was re-energized when I did!

I think I should give credit to Bill Cosby for that.  It's one of those jokes that's been around for ages, my grandfather used to pull that on me all the time, but the first comedian I saw do it was Cosby.
