Videos / What's this trick called? (Loopicide or mini duicide?)
« on: May 06, 2005, 03:45:28 PM »
I'm pretty sure that's called a mini-duicide. I think it's in one of Donald's books, but I can't recall.

Gear / chinese yoyos...
« on: April 27, 2005, 07:12:11 PM »
It's been quite a long time since I used a Chinese yo-yo (or "whistling diabolo" as we called them back then), and I don't remember if I ever tried 2 of them, but I would be tempted to try stick-jam corrections: That is, jamming the tip of the handstick into the axle just as the diabolo is about to land back on the string. Angle the butt end of the stick forwards or backwards depending on which way you want to correct.

Let us know how that turns (or not) out.

I think the trick Spink and Ginger Tom were working on (and have nailed so I hear) falls into the Mach 5 category (need to see a mach 5 clip to be sure but its what I was trying at BJC)

Mach 5 Video

Should've done that before, I suppose. ;-)

The basic idea is that the yo-yo/diabolo stays still in the middle of a string cradle of some sort, whilst the cradle rotates around it. Looks best when the rotation is done slowly.

This week we have a yoyo inspired trick by Tom Derrick. My cultured sources ( Seán_) inform me  that in yoyo jargon this trick may be called the Gyroflop.
http://diabolo.ca/tricks.htm

It is indeed called a Gyroflop. Anyone interested in yo-yo should check out the English language yo-yo forum.
Now can someone work out how to translate Mach 5 to diabolo, please?

Thanks for the mirror, Gherkin.

I had problems with it too, Ronnie. Nice editing, but sucky encoding. I normally don't have a problem with Xvids, but this one would only play for me in VLC (old faithful!), and then only properly at the 2nd attempt.
If you've already tried that, then I don't know what to suggest, I'm afraid. Apart from moaning at Arron, of course, but no-one enjoys that ;-)

It's always a good idea to check that University clubs are happening though, in case you visit during the holidays.

Well, since I'm in here now, I might as well give a plug to BBU:

http://www.juggler.net/bungayballsup

A few folks in here have already said they're coming, or are tempted, so I thought I'd get the lassoo out, and see if I couldn't round me up a posse of diabolists :-D

It'd be cool to see you there.

Community & Events / Diabolofest?
« on: April 05, 2005, 11:55:07 PM »
Circus Space (England) held a one-day diabolo convention in both 93 & 94. I went to the 93 one, and learnt lots, [umbrella whipping? Whoah, Bruce, that's, like, impossible, man] and had a lot of fun. There were ~25 of us there, at a vague & hazy guess/memory.

I'd guess a few different national one-dayers would be the way to start testing the waters, and move on from there if it all seemed feasable.

Perhaps you haven't noticed the 'BJC' thread, Joe? There are several comments in there already. If it was you doing the glow-diabolo, then I captured a moment of your performance: picture

Yes, the BJC was great fun. It's been cool to lurk on the peripheries of you lot jamming away, at the last few conventions, and even occasionally be bothered to learn a new trick :-)

You can check out my pictures here , and my review here

Sorry to cross-post, but the cutting & pasting of that is all line-break screwed up.

Hi, I've been lurking here pretty much since the beginning, and figured it's high time I actually stuck my oar in.

Name: The Void
Location: Never far from my powerbook
Age: 217
Website: http://tlmb.net

1. How many years have you diaboloed for?
13

2. What or who got you started?
Dave and Andy, two mates that I moved into a house with, who also got me juggling.

3. What do you like best about the diabolo or juggling in general?
The impossibility of ever being able to say "I can do it." There's always something else

4. How many hours a day do you diabolo on average?
Hmmmmmm..... I'd say about 3 minutes a day is my average

5. Do you ever perform with the diabolo?
Yes. Street-showish usually, although I did throw together a cabaret act for some work a couple of years back.

6. Do you juggle other props? If so: balls, clubs, rings, cigar boxes, devil sticks... ?
Yes. Yes. Plus yo-yos, hats, and most other stuff.

7. What are your favourite diabolos, sticks, and string?
Pink ones.

8. Do you like working with 1, 2, or 3 diabolos the best?
1. That way I can manage to look good (to strags).

9. What is your favourite diabolo trick that you can do?
Raise a smile

10. What is the most amazing diabolo trick you've ever seen done?
John's S-fan staircase.

11. What tricks are driving you nuts right now (what are you working on)?
S-fan, with my own exit. I've only landed the exit about twice, and the s-fan lasts about three rotations if I'm *really* lucky.

12. What other diaboloists have inspired you?
Donald, Guy, Tre'space, Andy P, MFP, JGherkin (I think that's the s-fanboy John, right?), Barnesy, Lena, Zanzibar, Lucky Jim, Bruce, Sam Veale, so many others.
