Tricks / Ideas on fans...
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:48:27 PM »
I started to work on fans a little while ago.
I was just wondering if there has been anny atempts to do a fan while in the sprinkler/hyperloop possition? Or even a "doublewrapped s-fan".
It seems to me that this would be possible in theory and amazing in real life...
maybe trick of the week some day eh???

And I thought it was such a good conspiration theory...
Here is another (not so paranoid) atempt at explaining.
The beach hub is made of a verry thin slice of steel while the circus hubb (wich is indead aluminium) is made of much more metal. I think the circus hubb is a better design for keeping the diabolo stable (and for keeping the diabolo in one piece for more than a year as well).
If they made the circus hub out of steel instead of aluminium it would be much heavier, and that would affect the diaboloish properties in a bad way.

The hubs migth be more durable on a beach, but my experience is that the plastic cups will break after about 6 months of regular use...
I think that the smaller weight of the beach reducdes the damage to the hubs  quiet a lot, but it dosnt explain everything.
I dont know why they dont make cirkushubs ot of this super metall. Maybe they just want to sell a lot of brand new teflon hubbs...

The fan doesnt last verry long, after a while (maybe 5-6 seconds) one of the diabolos stop to spin and everyting ends up in a nasty tangle... As soon as I get this fanning solid Im going to learn the s-fan, they say its infinite so I dont have to worry about how to exit then...
When learning new tricks I think it helps a lot to have the words "dont panic" in mind, It's never as fast as you imagine it to be in the beginning.
(exept the double, tripple and quad sprinkler of course...)

I did my first fans today! I still ont know how to exit cleanly but thats a mather of minutes to find out...
It was one of those tricks i labeled "impossible" years ago...
Thanks to this site and all wonderfull diabolists here I have come out of a loooong stagnation phase and started to learn new stuff. Thanx everyone!   (Why is there no mrpink smiley by the way???)

Did another "roof roller" while performing today. Lucky enough the diabolo came back down again (on an other streat for gods sake...) after about 10 seconds of dread and sorow...

I think this forum is way more active than jongleringsoasen. Partly because there is no forum function on oasen so its impossible to really discuss annything there.
Culd be a good idea to agree on a certain "chat time" so that everyone can dropp in at the same time.

and in one smooth motion catch the string, try to throw it round the axle to unwrap only to have it wrap up and tie itself to my index finger tightly enough that i had to cut it off with my penknife....

If you hurry to the hospital they migth be able to put it back for you...

twentynineandahalf?? Even I can do better than that
(with one of those tiny little diabolo thingies annyway).
Out and toss and steal  this german record before I do...
I think the jump is pretty funky too and if well timed (just before diabolo leaves the string i belive...) it will increase the velocity of the diabolo.
Maybe it helps to scream as well  (some discus throwers do that...)
And wearing a silly hat is verry good as well.

Wow fluid dynamics... soon we will have people talking about chaostheory and  silly butterflies making bad wether...
Dont get me wrong, I really think this is quiet interesting.
The diabolo is spinning pretty quickly. How does this affect the air resistance?
If I want to throw high shuld i have lots of spinn or barley enough to keep it stable?

If they're standing there long enough to even start setting alight without moving, they probably deserve to burn.

Good point!  But I must sugest you get a good lawyer to make the jurry se it your way... if the diabolo lands in one of those silly things parents use to drag their kidds along in it could get a little more serious... I have heard that it happened but lucky enough it was no fire diabolo...

So now we have a formula that is easy for annybody to use.'
How about some experimenting?
It would be great if we could have some actual record atempts here as well.
What is the highest throw you can do? (and is it sientifistically documented?).
Mabe we wont find the highest throw ever done but it culd be fun annyway...

I have hit myself with a high throw in the midle of my face, it wasnt pleasant, but didnt really hurt that much. A badly aimed stick is probably much worse...
A firediabolo is a potential killer. If you drop it will run away and can burn or even set fire to some inocent bystander.

General / Audience participation

Old toppic but still interesting...
I once saw a streetperformer do a trick called "kill the kid"
He placed a diabolo ontop of the head of a child and whiped it of whit the string. It was pretty funny when he explained that sometimes the child ended up flying out in the audience while the diabolo fell to the ground...
If you do this stunt make sure you dont scare your voulenteer, a crying child is not a good way to win an audience...

Having routines where voulenteers help you is great.
But dont stop with just that. you dont have to drag people onstage to get them involved in your performance. You can get them to clap the rythm for you, do a countdown before the "BIG" trick, and in extreme cases you can even get them to wigle their ears...
Geting people to do things like this is a good way to keep them interested and alert during the show.

I did some platespinning on the handstick with the diabolo going on the string. It was verry simple to do , once i got the idea... Ill try with a devilstick  one of these days...

When you lern a new trick you want to show it and tell others that you have achived someting new. This is a thread where you can tell about your latest achievements, doesnt matter if its the stringclimb or a solid four diabolo shuffle you just lernt, tell us about it! And let others be inspired by what you do!

Edit by Sean, November 12 2009:
This is one of many "I just learnt to..." threads which was started by mrbpink back in 2005 (in fact you are now reading the original!). Its intended purpose was as follows:

When you learn a new trick you want to show it and tell others that you have achieved something new. This is a thread where you can tell about your latest achievements, doesn't matter if its the string climb or a solid four diabolo shuffle you just learnt, tell us about it! And let others be inspired by what you do!
The original "I just learnt to..." thread wasn the most popular thread on the forum. Long forum threads induce an extra burden on the forum database server, so to keep things running smoothly around here I have started archiving these threads by year.

If you really feel like reading them all, there are about 1000 posts per year (2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005). There may also be more years of threads since this message was written. Have a look around. Otherwise, just post in the most recent version of this thread. It should be near the top of the Tricks section. It almost always is.

Some confusion and lots of formulas... so Ill just add some more...
More about gravity and falling objects can be found in wikipedia:

The formula I found there for calculating the distance traveled for a freely falling object falling t seconds is

Formula for calculating diabolothrowheight becomes
h=g/2(time/2)^2   (here t is the total airtime)
aproximating g=10 we can simplify and get

h=5/4*t^2 alternativley

h=1.25*t*t (wich is verry easy to remember)

t is still the total airtime upp and down.

Lemony you forgot  the factor 1/2 in your formula so your throw is sadly enough just 20 m...

I did a high throw last summer , it still hasn't come down...
But since its kind of stuck on top of a roof I dont think it beats the 12k throw...

Wouldnt almost all 5, 4 and 3 diabolojugglers be known to other diabolists whic in turn know other diabolists?
If somebody think its important enough its just to start to colect names and videoevidence...

If we dont take the airfriction into consideration and apply newtons laws of gravity and a little algebra and the aproximate value 10 for the gravityconstant (its about 9.82 really) the formula to calculate the height of a diabolothrow in terms of airtime becomes

h is the height in meters
t is the total airtime in seconds

a 4 second throw wuld be aproximatley  1.25*4*4=20 m high
and a 5 second throw 1.25*5*5=30 m
and a 6 second throw 1.25*6*6= 45m

Another way to messure the height of a throw wld be to put an observer (possibly a camera) at a known distance say 20 meters from the thrower.
He wuld then mesure te angle he observes the diabolo in when it peaks.
A little trigionometery is all that is neded to get the result then...
