I'm New / Re: Introduce yourself
« on: May 07, 2005, 02:54:01 PM »
Finally signed up, so I guess it's only fair that I spill the beans...

1  How many years have you diaboloed for?

About 15 years.

2  What or who got you started?

I'd been juggling for a couple of years when I first got a catalogue from the Oddballs shop.  My first diabolo came in a big parcel with my first devil stick, rings, cigar boxes, 3 spinning plates and a copy of ...yes indeed... the Complete Juggler.  It was all happily downhill after that!

3  What do you like best about the diabolo or juggling in general?

The diabolo?  Hugely versatile prop and it fits in my handluggage!  Juggling in general?  Meet great people, travel the world and it even manages to pay my bar bill and keep a roof over my head :D

4  How many hours a day do you diabolo on average?

Nowadays, that all depends on work.  At least half an hour a day, more if i'm in the mood.

5  Do you ever perform with diabolo?

It's the only real job I've ever had, to be honest. Yes, for the last ten years!

6  Do you juggle other props?  If so: balls, clubs, rings, cigar boxes, devil sticks....?

Have dabbled quite a bit in all of them.  Used to do quite a bit of devil stick.  At the moment i'm partial to a bit of kendama and astro jacks. Honestly, we have a lot of spare time backstage!

7  What are your favourite diabolos, sticks and string?

On stage I use unmodified Henrys circus, Henrys white flecked string and wooden Babache sticks.  What a dinosaur.  I also used to use Renegade on stage for years; they're soooo forgiving.  In private i've got some henrys circus with 4erlei wide axles, Henrys yellow string and some tungsten tipped 4erlei carbon sticks which are really jolly nice.

8  Do you like working with 1, 2 or 3 diabolos the best?

One is always most fun.

9  What is your favourite diabolo trick that you can do?

Milking the......i dunno.  So much to choose from.  Suicides are always cool, all flavours.

10  What is the most amazing diabolo trick you've ever seen done?

Watching Guy thrashing away with three way back in 1992 was pretty amazing.  Manchester 94 too when Dave Proctor appeared with his renegade fingercurl and the hyperloop/ sprinkler.  And whales on the side of his renegades.

11  What tricks are driving you nuts right now?

There's always something cleverer than yourself!

12  What other diabolists have inspired you?

Where to start?  Pearse Halfpenny and Guy Heathcote.  Learning tricks together with Bruce Wilson in his kitchen in Edinburgh.  Jochen Schell in Archaos way back in 91.  Dave P, Andy, Fritz Grobe, Barnsey.......the list goes on and on.  All of the new breed are inspiring, I especially like what Priam and Trash are up to.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  In response to some of the questions.....

- sorry can't make it to Holland for the convention, as I have shows every night except Tuesday.

- I WILL get to the Berlin convention, if only for the mornings and afternoons.  It's one of the best conventions anywhere.

- Sean, there ARE two more books written a while back (Suicidal Tendencies and Grante's Inferno).  I'll see what I can do about getting them out there somehow.

The BJC video?  You're all too kind!

Cheers for now

Donald Grant

Just a quick post to say that i've finally got round to signing up for the forum. Greetings to all and I'll try to contribute something more useful than "milking the cow" variations to the group.

I'm in Berlin playing at the Wintergarten variete until the 17th of July so if any of you find yourselves in the area, feel free to drop me a line.

All the best
Donald Grant
