Performances / Chinese diabolo troupe performance, 2008
« on: October 11, 2010, 10:19:20 AM »
Hello chaps,

A Taiwanese colleague of mine, after learning that I do the odd bit of diaboloing now and again, brought in quite an old school whistling Gong-Qun and sent me a couple of videos to look at. I thought I'd share this one, apologies if it's been posted already. It's one of those super-synchronised troupe performances, in the style of Cirque, including some vertax, multiple diabs and a couple of ludicrously long passes over the heads of the few remaining audience members who dared to sit underneath.

Anyway, here you go.

Good luck in the contest.

Some was filmed as early as March. Others just today (4th June)

As many of us here are still on the 3rd of June, this truly is a look into what diabolo will be like in the future...
...yeah, looks pretty good :)

Um, probably the best diabolo video I've ever seen! Incredible creativity aside, I think what really amazed me is that in over 7 minutes of footage, I'd only ever seen about 3 or 4 of the tricks before.

It looks like a tesselation to me, which will be made out of 1 piece of paper. The crease pattern is also printed on the paper, which would suggest that it's a template that somebody has found on the internet. Good luck looking!

John, amazed his origami knowledge would come in handy on this forum

Didn't expect to be ever saying this sentence to somebody, but damn Will... you really have Danni Minogue wrapped around your little finger :-D

Great performance, tons of energy and I'm off to vote right now.
Good luck!

Another great Ballring, had a marvellous day.

Highs : The Steven Ragatz workshop, Team Bluntz representing in an epic way, seeing the Chez Vegas diabolo crew, outside shenanigans with Funty / Nev / Andy /Sean and aforementioned posse, Void owning us all in Kendama, seeing Nick again, £1.40 a pint.

Managed to do my first 360 fan, back of the net. Roll on August for the British convention :-)

Yep, thoroughly enjoyed this one, props to Chiok and co for organising such a great venue.

The good :

Ludicrously spacious hall
Meeting old and new forumers, particularly Mark "Southern lights" BMC, Looby, Ben, Alex, David, Andy and the chap with the green & red finesse whose name escapes me
Doing a 180 fan for the first time, really badly
Absolutely rubbish passing with BMC
Void enlightening me to the joys of Kendama
Grandad Heathcote on the unicycle
Henrys Circus for £15 a pop

The bad

Tons of people turning up at the bar flairing workshop, so could only watch as not enough props to go around
Leaving early

The ugly

Looby's Ginster lunch. Overall a treat of a convention.

See you all in Brum,

I'm really not that keen on the look of the new "Glary" diabolos. They'd maybe look a bit better if they were just translucent, but they appear to have a leafy pattern on them which makes me think of these garish chunky glass sweetbowls my Nan had in the 80s.

Not for me  :)

I miss Tahia, he inspired me a lot a few years ago and his videos were the reason I finally bought that second diabolo. I'd love to see what he's been doing recently, and if his 3 red circus are actually *still* going after all this time!

Yeah, I've been doing this for 2 or 3 years, sorry :-)
It's a pretty nice way to get out of the web, by turning it into a magic knot and also changing the pattern of the web into a more arrowy shape rather than zig zag. Followed by a whip catch it's a nice little combo to show people unfamiliar with diabolo.

I really found the music very funny indeed.

As others have said, something a bit more subtle (and slightly less dramatic) would fit the bill better, especially as you're in the tranquil countryside.

Most schools require any visitors who will be working with their children to send in a copy of their CRB certificate beforehand - as this can be a bit of a lengthy procedure from application to receival, it'll probably be a good idea to start looking into getting one quite soon;

You may find that some schools have some circus equipment already, although I've seen this mostly in secondary schools and colleges. The majority will expect you to bring your own stuff, so it may be worth looking into the "workshop deals" on Firetoys / Oddballs / Butterfingers etc. It'll be your own money, unless you can get funding. Which is an even lengthier process...

Hope this helps.

Videos of the Week / Re: VotW: 31 March, 2008: Langerz

I wanted to write that it was dull, purely so I could say "Langerz is slacking". But even a dodgy pun can't detract from a tasty VOTW, nicely done Mr L.

Tricks / Re: my 2 diabolo shuffle
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:11:55 AM »
If the diabolos miss the right string when they're hopping across the top, then point the tips of your sticks closer together, which closes the loop off more. The tips of my sticks virtually touch when I shuffle, your mileage may vary but it's worth a try.

nice video, but is that way too much? there has been great diabolists (and even more amazing diabolovideos) after MFP era..
Agreed, but watching this one just bought back the memories of when I first saw Diabology and how fluid it was. He just has a pleasing visual style, like pranay.

Really smooth, complex and creative diabolo, not seen anything this beautiful to watch since MFP = style.

On a side note, great song from a great album, nice to see it incorporated so well with a diabolo video.
Orchestral breakbeat in 7/8 really pushes my buttons.

More diabolo videos should have powerslides in them.

Another good yet poorly attended Brum convention! It always baffles me how few people turn up, still, mightily enjoyed myself even if the old shoulder injury started giving me grief towards my departing time anyway. Good to see you all again, learned some nice string rejections from Nick (and actually remembered them this time) and thanks to Duncan for helping me out on a few bits and pieces that were giving me grief.

And my much appreciation to Mark_BMC and his lady for feeding me tasty exotic European food, it was ruddy lovely. See you all again mighty soon.

/John, searching for "dead wrestler montage" on google
