How do you keep a record of new tricks/ideas?
« on: December 13, 2017, 09:58:01 AM »
Hey there!
I don't recall having posted anything here before so i'm a bit new to this, but I have a question with serious interest and need of an answer :)
I have a question relating a problem I stumble upon quite a lot when thinking of a new idea for a trick or a throw/catch. I really struggle keeping a record of those ideas (not that I have that many, but still enough to forget :p). This issue really pops up in diabolo for me since the new stuff you do is usually far outside of the tricks which are defined with names. Though, I can imagine people who do a lot of 3 ball/club/ring sequences will struggle with this as well since I see the weirdest (and coolest) body throws passing by here. So my question is, do you guys recognise this problem and how do you record these tricks or ideas? I have tried writing stuff down, but it easily gets out of hand due to having to think of names for things, which tend to just sound ridiculous and make no sense at all the next day. I have tried of filming but the camera isn’t always at hand and if the trick is actually difficult it could be hard to capture the idea clearly.

Looking forward to some responses, thanks! :)

My system is quite simple

I record everything, good ideas, and bad ideas, all of them. If not I forget things.
I then name the file it as follows: [Priority] [Number of diabolos] [Description with words]
[Priority] Shows how much interested I am on practicing a trick. It is a mixture of Difficulty, and aesthetics (hard an ugly is a 5, easy an sexy is a 1)
[Number of diabolos/style]  Just to be able to order by name and have at least some category
[Description with words] I usually use as many words as I feel like. Short names are of no use here, to me, at least today I believe so.

I then from time to time go back there and scroll from 1 to 5 and maybe pick up something I like o train and clean it. Sometimes I am thinking about a trick and I go back to the folder to see if something from my catalog matches.

Hi Mees.

My system is quite complex ;)

I never recorded to much of my tricks, I used to use a pen and a kind nomenclature that I get evolving during those years.
Now I'm starting to record my material. But record is the easy part, for me the point of that is that question:
How to come back to a trick that I record.

The "problem" of that, is that every one have his way to name the tricks, also some tricks change the name when you change the country.

This last two years in my free time I was working on a database based on Wordpress. I write a post about it you can read here.
http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=12987.0

I started this project for myself, but while I was doing it i was realizing that it would be interesting do it with more people, one of the points is that "problem" that i commented before, if we do it together we will arrive to a language that everyone can understand.

I think that this WordPress is a beta, but for now works for me, and before to go upgrade that project it would be nice to have and agreement about that nomenclature.

The data base is here. https://labs.troposfera.xyz/jugglingresearch
Also in this WordPress I will try to post material for research and other stuff.
For example, I have a A4 table to discover tricks, with that table you can find 52000 variations .

I used to just draw really crude pictures of ideas (on post-its so it had to be crude). If I was doing it nowadays I would film it while explaining to myself but also write it down (studies have shown that you remember stuff better that way).

Honestly so much easier for people to practice today with all the tools on hand.
