Hey folks, how is it going?

for those who don't know me my name is Lucas, I'm from Brazil and for the past 8 years I've been posting videos on Malabarize-se, an youtube channel, including tons of diabolo tutorials.

after thinking a lot about this question I decided to bring this idea for the community.

Let's be fair.
suicide and genocide are really bad names for diabolo tricks.

if you teach kids or people who tried to suicide you see that this is not so easy to use and can push some people from practicing or scary some others.
specially out of context.

in the video I explain better (it has english subs)

but the idea is to start to call suicides: FLIPS and
genocides: AROUND THE WORLD

from now on.

I'm already using this terminology on my diabolo new videos.

what do you think?

flip and around the world is quite far from the terminology we're used to.
i just say mini-gen or geno when talking with people who don't know the diabolo language so well.
suicide is a fair name just judging by the stick shooting towards you, i can see that. never thought that one should be changed haha but of course you also have a valid point with this one.

You have a very valid point there, Lucas! I have also thought about that in recent years, especially when teaching kids. As I am German, people don't connect the trick names with the actual meaning of the words that often as there is a language barrier but it still feels kinda strange anyways.

I think that this discussion is a reflection on many other social debates like gender or to name a few. Some want to hold on to traditional aspects and don't see a necessity, some want to change the status quo in order to protect those who feel attacked or offended. I can understand both sides more or less.

I do also think that the suggestions you gave could be a bit handier when using, like Jannis already pointed out.
Maybe "(stick) release" ("small/big"; "mini/maxi") would be a better fitting name?

the thing with stick release is that it doesn't translate well, at least not to portuguese.

small/big and mini/maxi are terminologies that are usefull and easy to implement imo.

Been a loooooong while since I wrote here (I still lurk now and then). Anyway the idea is good but it could prove difficult to change generally accepted/understood terminology completely "just like that".

You could always do what I do and just shorten the tricknames when talking to non-diabolists(?). Suicide = "sui" and genocide = "geno" (like Jannis above). I've admittedly never done that to censor myself but rather because I'm lazy and two syllables is less than three-four. End result remains the same.
