that was pretty cool, im really confused aswell. I like how the guy is all gangstered up and it looks more like a brakedancing fight thingy than a spinning top showcase.

I worked with a professor at my college a little on top spinning this year. It starts with the string wrapped around the top. You throw it, and the string spins the top as it comes off. There is a small tip on the bottom, and that it what you catch the string on and pick it up. All I could pull off was jumping the top off the floor up into my hand.
But yeah there's a lot of sweet stuff you could do with tops. I saw a trick done once called Corkscrew. The guy wrapped the string around his arm, and let the top spin all the way down his arm going round and round. I don't know much about it, but hope this helped!

Yes, it's a spinning top. As for the tricks, well, yes, that's just what top players do.

Pretty strange and cool toy. It had some wierd tricks to it and seemed pretty hard to use. Athough, diabolo still owns it

Hmm, didn't realise spinning tops were that huge. I remember reading all about them when Steve Brown focussed more on tops than yoyos, but never really got into them or understood them. Still, cool tricks can indeed be done, body moves defintely evident.
I had a spinng top when I was young, it had a rubber tip that you rolled over a surface to speed it up (like a kinetic engine on a toy car) and it caused the gyroscope to spin and keep it steady. It also came with a variety of tips to balance it on things. Most of the time I just sped it up and let it fly across the floor.
Thanks for sharing though!

I think I saw Jochen Schell do something similiar to that at the
Berlin Convention 2005. His looked more flat though (like saucers or something). Doesn´t it hurt when you catch the pointy tip on your hand like that though?

Spin-tops are my favorite
skill toy
and are responsible for my growing diabolo obsession.

Taka's now posted a couple more top videos. This first one is from the same Columbian event, but much longer and with more variety:

and this one is quite different in that it just shows someone turning a top from a piece of wood:

I know that there's also a history of one-sided diabolos (probably the platter thing with Schell). I remember reading some years ago about being able to do it with pot lids. I believe there's also a one-sided version of the chinese-style diabolos.
I'd think that the tricks between a one-sided diabolo and spintop are similar in a lot of ways, with the precession, etc. There was also a combination of yo-yo and spintop called the P213 that Doctor Popular came up with. Different from stuff like the Miroc because it actually has a full halve of a spintop on the side.
Those Columbian vids are especially impressive in that they don't have bearing tips on them but are doing really long combos. Though it is possible to speed up spintops, it seems like it is pretty difficult compared to a diabolo...
