So after many weeks of off and on work I have finally migrated the whole video of the week series over to a database driven setup. There is still work to be done and changes that could be made. Heck, I could even throw the whole thing out and go back to the original design if people prefer the old arrangment that much more.
The new setup:
http://diabolo.ca/tricksHere are some quick advantages and disadvantages I could think of:
Advantages:
-good search capabilities (even with additional hidden keywords if we want). Try it out! For ex. search for '2d' to find all the 2 diabolo tricks, or search for 'Arjan' to find all tricks by Arjan.
-easier to maintain
-I won't have to keep updating the site by hand for the rest of my life - ie. there's hope that someone else will be able to take it over
-if I set up the ffmpeg or mplayer binaries on the server the gallery script can create thumbnails from the videos automatically
-this would also enable the "random" votw which would show up on the left side of the screen like a normal Gallery 2 setup
-if we wanted to, this set up would be easier to have multiple people administer it... even if this just means having someone take over for a while or cycling who is responsible.
-it gives us a view count
-it separates the content from the display - ie. we can always play with the display later using the original database entries
Disadvantages:
-it's a bit less aesthetically flexible... much less aesthetically flexible given my lack of php expertise (although themes do exist for Gallery 2)
-it doesn't follow the same format as either diabolo.ca or the forum (although you can integrate it nicely with wordpress, which I've contemplated moving the main site over to someday)
The single biggest user advantage I can think of is the powerful search function.
Anyway, if you have any thoughts of how'd you like this to develop, let me know.
