Taiwan Yo Yo Contest 2006 Diabolo Demonstration

The results for the Taiwan Yo-yo Contest 2006 were just posted online. One of the routines was a diabolo demonstration, so I thought you lot might be interested. Here is the link:

Some nice ideas with one and two, an Eiffel Tower, a little bit of three and some of the pinkest diabolos I've ever seen. What more could you ask for?

THat was actually pretty good!  It started off okie dokie, and then it was like watching someone improve over time.  His 2D started looking a bit sketchy and then after a little bit busted out some great knots and transfers.  Same with his 3D, didn't look like he could keep it going and then does a nice 423 and almost a sun.

The Indiana whips to whip catch were great.  I'm glad he kept on going despite the drops because it seemed like a forgiving audience and he was quite good.  He didn't seem to think he was going to win (diabolo at a yo-yo contest?) so it was just all about fun.

Thanks for digging that out Nick, I've gotta clear some space from my hard drive...

Anyone know what diabolo's they were - looked like the clear Bandai Diabigs but I didnt think those were still made? and the ones he used for 2 sounded like they had ractchets? EDIT - the pink & green ones he used for 2 were ratchet axels - the pink ones he used for 2 / 3 were not - but they looked the same!

That was really strange. His 1D was ok but it was nothing special. Out of the blue he does a fan 720 and some nice knot transfers, and then 3D. I don't think he had a set routine, he just went through his arsenal of tricks and it was nice to watch.

His 2D start that never worked was a really neat idea which I'll probably go out and try as soon as I can. He wasn't solid, but he was fun to watch. It'd be interesting to see what other kinds of things he's working on off stage.

Add: the audience seemed to react positively to the hard tricks he was trying: perhaps they weren't just all gasps and knew how hard the tricks he was trying were?

transparent diabigs I guess (I'm almost sure they are)
dunno if they are still made but many japanese/taiwan people seem to have a couple of these

I think Spink is refering to a different trick.
I figured out his Tower last night, so here you go Spink:
1. Right-hand slack under whip.
2. Dismount slack whip, throw slack back over the stick and around the far cup.
3. The diabolo should now be in a sort of trapeze mount over you thumb (or finger).
4. Turn left stick in towards you and place against the two strings around your thumb.
5. Wrap the right hand stick tip and its string around the near cup in a clockwise direction.
6. Slide the strings on the left hand stick (those from Step 4) down off the stick to form the Eiffel Tower.
7. Assume a stylish pose then exit with an anticlockwise sun or equivalent.
8. Stop procrastinating and tell everybody what "Third Base" means.

I'm away from my diabolo at the moment but I think this is right. The mechanics of the trick are exactly the same as a Tower from one of Diabolumberto's videos (combo.wmv?) where he goes from a left hand back wrap to a thumb mount, then into the Tower.

True - though they looked pretty new to me- & still doesnt explain the ratchets - as far as I'm aware they didnt make any with bearing axels  (maybe he transfered the guts from a spinabolo or something to the bandais ).  Anyhows I was just wondering if there was anyplace in Taiwan etc still making these (or knockoff copies for that matter ).

Yeah, it happens quite frequently, here for the World Yoyo Contest there is a diabolo ladder, and at some regional contests there are demonstrations, not usually competition though.

I also thought the vid was really cool, and I'm jealous of his brightly colored diab's, haha.

Oh I get that, my underhanded point was, that a diabolo isn't gonna win at a yo-yo contest (Perhaps in the 5A section).

Well.. if you just mean there wasn't pressure (besides wanting to look competent) because he wasn't competing, then that's true. But I don't think you could actually use a diabolo in a yo-yo division.

I'm not sure on exact rules, but a rule of thumb is probably method of gaining spin. Using friction on the axle for diabolo and winding and unwinding for the yo-yos. So I guess if you had a small diabolo that you could consistantly wind up (like in indiana whip), that could probably work. But the issue is the big width of a diabolo axle makes it tricky.

Looking at it from the other side... I've seen offstring yo-yos done like loop diabolo (and two offstring yo-yos on one string can be done, called Soloham) but still always wound up. I wonder what'd happen if someone used a fixed axle yo-yo like an Apollo Pro and accellerated it using loop diabolo method or regular diabolo type pulls. I'd think it might be disqualified, but I don't think anyone's actually tried it!

This does make me think... I don't think anyone's tried making a yo-yo with a one-way bearing. I wonder how that'd work with normal string tricks with the string attached. If you could do most of the same tricks but not wind the yo-yo until the end. Or for offstring with diabolo accelerations working, but also yo-yo style regenerations.

I thought he did a nice job for seemingly not having it all planned out. I'm glad he was able to show off diabolo to everyone at the contest.

As an aside, this past world yo-yo contest had to be the most juggling-ish I've seen. There was two diabolo players that could do 3-low (Hadrien from France and Rei from Japan) and Jason Garfield was there to promote the WJF. Nice to see more crossover..

i concur i reckon at some point yoyo and diab will just hybrid into stupid divisions. i also think about this subject quite alot. there are just too many possibilities. and i think that some people wont aprove of some of these catagries, because its not yoyo or whatever. so you shouldn't be able to compete using that style. so if the people that run worlds (eg) wont take them into acount  i'm sure they'll get frowned upon by players from around the world. i mean it's still an act. tricky.. imagine 84a haha........

i'm thinking there a taiwanese brand. i have a bearings diabolo at home that looks like what he has.

After a little searching around the interweb I found these

Anyone got any experience of these??  If so, are they any good??

From the black / white hubs I'm guessing they have a bearing axel (ala spinabolo style)
