this would be my first convention and i really want to go, ill see what my dad says about taking me there, but if i do go, would there be some people from the forum that would help me with some 2 diabolo tricks? if not would there be a diabolo workshop or would it just be juggling workshops

I'm doing a 2d workshop, some talk about that in this thread http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=2653.0

It's a big event, lots going on, there should be plenty of workshops, jams and so on, the chances of going and not learning something new are pretty slim. A lot of people are pretty approachable and helpful.

This being my first convention, i was wondering if they were generally quite cliquey, i mean, do diaboloers stay in a group, and jugglers and devilstickers etc? or is it just a massive group?

EDIT: although, i guess i will find out when i get there:)

I really wouldn't worry about the social side, you will see groups of people all doing the same prop in different areas of the hall, but that’s just trick swapping and people who already know each other enjoying themselves. I do seem to annoy club passers chasing after my dropped diabolo, but I think they take up an unfair amount of space in a hall anyway so It doesn't keep me up at night. I was quite shy at my first convention a few years back and didn't really talk to many people. I still enjoyed it but it’s always better to wander up and start chatting to people. As in life in general their are going be people you get on with and people you don't, at a convention I find the odds change significantly for the better.

diabolo is a great social prop because you can chat and diabolo.
a checklist for ya

diabolos [and make sure their still your own at the end]
beer [ or the willingness to be around diabolists drinking beer, it is in no way mandatory DONT DO DRUGS KIDS!]
A basic grasp of sarcasm and northern humour.
A tent or a blagged space in one
Cash for the stalls.
and then sensible stuff toothbrush yadayada

I'm sure you will recognise allot of people off the forum, ill be the one asking where my diabolo rolled to.

Wow cheers! That was amazingly informative! i think i shall be bringing beer... or my choice of drink, Ale:) Well, if you see 2 loners, me, some looser with a huge emo fringe and 2 yellow finnesse and a guy with trampy blonde hair using 2 green/blue finnesse then PLEASE talk to us, because i think it could potentially be fairly overwhelming for us:)

And dont judge me because of my hair ;D

Everyone should be a polymath about juggling, that way you'd understand why everyone complains about everyone else.  Diabolo passing takes up loads more space than club passing, unless you're doing some torture chamber or something big.

I think an important thing is to be polite, introduce yourself, ask before borrowing props, make sure the props are yours and generally like you'd behave at a picnic.  Except people are throwing stuff and drinking, and possibly eating.  Don't worry, it'll be great, just strike up a conversation with people that you find interesting and it'll all be gravy.

Excited now, they've taken my money.

okay, just a query, i cant seem to find anywhere on the BJC site that says what a 'child' is, is it under 16 or 18? and if you are a child, do you have to be accompanied by an adult? because i am screwed if we do.

Child is 11 - 15 inclusive, not sure what they mean by 'inclusive', which is on the pre-reg form. It doesn't say anything about being accompanied with an adult, but if that is the case you could just buy tickets with some random older guy you find :D

Inclusive means just that, everyone who is 11 right through to everyone who is 15 is a child.  If you are 15 and 364 days, you're still a child, the following day, you have to pay adult prices.  It's what you get for being able to get a salary.  If you are 16, you have free roam like all the other upstanding generations.

I'm not sure of the actual legalities of attendance though.  I don't think I've ever seen an age rating for a theatre show, unless it's got blatent nudity, in which case an advisory note is added.
