Stage 6 - uploading videos
« on: February 04, 2007, 11:25:44 AM »
stage 6 is DivX's answer to youtube.
it's a lot like youtube but the quality of the videos are a lot better. you have to upload your videos in DivX but it worth it because it has a download link.
you have to download DivX Player for it to work.

i have uploaded mine and Zack's performance at Leeds fest 06 to stage 6 and youtube, so you can compare the results

youtube- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-UtMxPn4is

stage 6- http://stage6.divx.com/members/473003/videos/1106494

what do you think?

Wow that's an awesome streaming quality! And the Desktop-Dimmer-Thing is very nice!
I will definately try that for the Diabolocamp video :)

Hi Marc, you should have used a deinterlacing filter for the video, I hate all those friggin lines :P

The quality was nice though... only MAJOR disadvantage is that it takes forever to load. So that kinda ruins the whole idea behind streaming videos ;) Youtube loads so much faster.

Uploaded the dcamp Video on stage 6 today:
http://stage6.divx.com/content/show/1107316

But Martijn is right - it is no alternative to youtube because i takes so long to load but i think it is a possibility to people with fast internet connection that do not want to download videos but watch them with high quality!

I also have to mention that uploading took about 3 hours for me...

BUT: You can download the video in full resolution and quality (click on the down-arrow on the top of the video).

Yeah but that video is well ove 100 MB if my calculations are correct then for someone with a 1MB line with a average upload speed it would take about 2 hours at full speed.

The usual FTP-Upload for that video took me 55 minutes (i did it on two server and the size is about 190 mb)
I have fast upspeed and usually hosting-sites grant full speed (fast upload on youtube works fine). But waiting for the upload on stage 6 to be complete was very boring. Well, I went practicing for some time ;)

Depends on what you're doing. Sean_ linked me to some music video that, after I paused my bittorrent, loaded and streamed almost instantaneously. And my connection isn't very fast, either (practical speeds of around 160kb/s download). To be fair, I haven't watched Marc's vid yet because my roommate is hogging the internet (and I'm trying to torrent too), so you could be very right :P

The only thing I dislike about this site is that it's DivX only. So many players (even hardware ones) support Xvid as well, I really wish this did. To upload my vids there, I'd have to take the raw files (luckily they're still around) and re-encode them to DivX instead of Xvid. Which means pirating the software, blah blah...which is ridiculous when I can already encode in free Xvid.

The whole streaming idea is probably best left to youtube or diabolozone. I suppose you could try VLC's built in streaming doo-dah.

Why pirating? You can also encode in DivX for free.

But why encode in free DivX when there is DivX pro out there which has more options and supposedly has higher performance...
