Yes, learning vertax will require a lot of face hits. That definitely happened to me when i was learning it.
It still happens some times when i try to create vertax webs and such.

I take lots of shoulder hits. Usually from when I get tired and I lower my arms some and SMACK.

The worst injury I ever managed was popping out some ligaments in my right arm doing a vertax whip catch at my folks house earlier this year. As I turned round to catch I tripped over a chain border fence in their front garden and fell face first onto the concrete, got my arm in the way to save my face, and after 4 sessions at a sports chiropracter and a really painfull few months of performing/teaching it was working properly again! The doctor I saw initially suggested I put my right arm in a sling for a month, and after explaining I ride a motor bike and teach circus skills for a living I though about a second opinion... !

The most self inflicted injury I ever managed was whilst doing an inside to outside under the leg whip catch. The diabolo went up on my right hand side, I drew back my strings over my head, and when I delivered the whip, the string hooked around my bridge piercing ( bar through top of nose ) and  my head followed under my leg towards the diabolo, needless to say i missed the catch but caught my own face! Bled a lot, and stung for a few days, a word of caution, dont pursue nasal whip catches, they will only lead to hurty x

Oh, and to reflect popular trends, my youth circus thought i had been self harming the week after i learnt some arm string wrappy moves!

My superspin made me bleed while I was using its sharp edges to "soothe" a mosquito bite on my leg.

Has anyone been attacked by their diabolo?

The other day i was diong a trick and the diabolo curled up and cracked me in the face giving me a red mark for a few days.

Anyone had anything more serious happen to them?

the stick flew around once then twice but it almost tripled in speed i tried to catch it but it whacked my index finger and crracked the nail down the center, few minutes later after it stopped bleeding it finally fell off so it was technically ripped off but meh still bloody hurt

2) yesterday morning i was doing a lil bit of diabolo i accidentally did 2 wraps with somepreety old string, had a bad snarl up and it hit my eye
