Author Topic: YouTube takes a stand against using copyrighted material, problems with uploads  (Read 6534 times)

Now, i didn't think this would happen. But seems like it did. I was uploading one new card trick clip to youtube and there it was. A new uploading system which checks your audio track for copyrighted music. So they had a claim for my video. First they obtained a right to advertise on the same page. A day later the video was blocked in several countries including my own. Well the same didn't affect my old videos so seems like the check happens with every new upload. There's no big problems in older videos since i've used lots of copyright free music. Of course i have done some copyright violations as well...

Just telling this so you guys know this when you're editing your videos. When you have edited your stuff to precisely to music it's just annoying to do all the work again for another music. This is what i had to do.

This might cause some problems with uploading clips from performances. If people use just any pop music in performance. And even if the copyrights have been payed for the event itself the copyrights won't allow the same music usage in youtube. Or does it? Seems like i'm moving to Juggling.tv.

Here's a guestion for mods here, does the direct link embedding work for Juggling.tv videos or will i have to post code to here in the future?

Currently youTube is the place i use to find music if i don't know which song it is. And it's fast and easy since there's lots of music there. We will see how all this affects to youtube users and popularity of the service.... Here's one link for you, http://www.youtube.com/t/howto_copyright

This is the reason we are no longer accepting copyrighted music in VotW submissions. Vimeo is another option, although it can only be embedded at low quality.

I wrote some code to allow juggling.tv to be embedded. Currently, given our current server, we are unable to convert the direct juggling.tv link to an embedded link. (We'd need "lookup" capability for that.) However, Juggling.tv is about to upgrade their configuration, and there may be some changes to this.

I had to pick some standard format for embedding. I chose the .flv link. If you look under the embedding code at the bottom. i.e. this:
Code: [Select]
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="380"wmode="transparent" data="http://www.juggling.tv/vaults/flvplayer.swf?
file=http://www.juggling.tv/vaults/flvideo/1619.flv&autostart=false&showfsbutton=true">
Pick out just the .flv link. i.e. this:
Code: [Select]
http://www.juggling.tv/vaults/flvideo/1619.flvNow, if I used that outside of code BBcode tags it would look like this:
http://www.juggling.tv/vaults/flvideo/1619.flv
The JTV link in the top left corner takes you to juggling.tv but not the current video (maybe that will change). So, it would also be good to include the link to the juggling.tv page below. i.e.
http://www.juggling.tv/vaults/view_video.php?viewkey=6f9394f88847d7f0050c

Thanks for the warning! Some old VotWs and an old video of mine have been detected as copyright infiringements, but checking every new upload is even worse! Good thing they introduced it after I uploaded the collab.

Seems like i'm moving to Juggling.tv.

Which is a good thing! Although sooner or later JTV might have to deal with copyright claims as well.

Here's a guestion for mods here, does the direct link embedding work for Juggling.tv videos or will i have to post code to here in the future?

When you watch a video on JTV, there's a box with the embedding code on that page. Simply post the .flv link out of that bit of code and it will automatically embed on the forum. Damn it Sean, you beat me to it! Again! :P

Thank you Sean and Martijn. Now i know how to put the videos to here for j.tv.
Interesting to see how this all develops... also what will happen to youtube if the continue having this harsh way of blocking videos. Wonder if they are going to scan trough all the old videos. That would be quite extreme, imagine more than half of the videos being dropped out.  :-X

Well that doesn't affect me anymore. I will continue under J.tv...

Yeah, JTV is the way to go. I have been streaming my videos at different websites already, so it's not too big a problem for me.

That would be quite extreme, imagine more than half of the videos being dropped out.

How about 90%?

The thing is actually worries me more is loss of powerful search engine and analyzing tools youtube provided. Now the people who use it will be reduced but actually the people who use the jtv might be the people i intend my videos...

The 90% might be quite accurate actually.

It's probably something youtube have to do to protect themselves i.e. to avoid legal action against them by the propriety owners of the music subject to the copyright.

I had a video taken down recently that had been up since summer 2007. So they must have spiders checking through old stuff. Even barely watched old stuff.

I used the Audio Swap feature just to get it back up again, but I'm sure it's terrible ...

I suppose there's nothing to do but start usng my own music, but people are going to like that even less than my tricks.

yeah I've had a couple pulled. I had to use Audio Swap too.

I uploaded a video last night and it flew through. It might help that I tend to use semi obscure music, or often more than one track or some speaking/silence at the beginning. I dont recall having to go through any extra hoops (but there was a link abut copyright rules, maybe a tickbox) -

Have found a slight workaround though
