How high could you make a elevator go?
« on: January 03, 2010, 04:53:28 PM »
Hi I was wondering if its possible that if you take a really big piece of string and you speed it up. And someone else stands on top of something and you do the elevator. How high can it go?

Anyone ever tried this?

Ben.

Isn't there a bit on diabology about a guy who does this in a performance and it goes to the top of the building?

how you want to speed up the diabolo with a 20 meter long string. :S someone can pass it into the string, but it will get hard to wrap the diabolo

UUhhhmm folks, is it me or: Cirque du Soleil Quidam Girls

@ 4:25, the vertical lines appear to me as string or rope, eventually used exactly how you described!!

edit: i like the clown at the end!! LOL!

I tried this about 15 years ago with a roll of string up two stories. It was a blast to do... once. ;) It is a lot of string to rewrap after.

Yes, like the Quidam girls you need to start it on your own string and then wrap it with the long string.

Did it out of a window of my house too once. Slippery string doesn't make it any easier  ::). And as Sean said, it's a lot of string to rewrap...
Meh,

Well Even Though A 57M Does Sound Amazing,
Still, The Best Elevator Is At 2:20 Its Not High It's Just Done By Jack :D

That is Awesome!

But could we try to find the maximum?

Their was someone saying about if we made a diabolo movie he would like to add funny pieces. Like a elevator up 2 the whole eifen tower hehe. I really wonder how high the maximum could be?

Nice thing to do at a convention :)

maybe if there was a diabolo that could switch from bearing to fixed- you could make it go fast in bearing and then switch it and do the elevator

Except you can't switch the Phoenix while it's in play.

The best path would be to use a light diabolo (Finesse G3, or such) and modify it with some steel weight rings on the rims, which would allow for a greater angular momentum at a given angular velocity.  This would allow a higher amount of kinetic energy to be transferred from the spin to the climb and eventually totally to potential energy, when the diabolo reaches the very top of its climb.  At that point, there is only potential energy.  A diabolo with weight concentrated towards the center would not have as much angular momentum while rotating at the same angular velocity (the rate of rotation); therefore, it would not reach the same level of potential energy (height).

Much more technical information can be delivered on this topic, but I think it may bore some people.

You also have to bear in mind that the increased mass would require a larger amount of work to lift it.

I really wanne try this out on the way they did it in Arjans posted video. Set a string out from a top of a building and then just speed it up with your own sticks then trow it on the string hanging of the building and then lift it. But.. You need a really large string. One that comes from a 50m roll or so or 25m first? And if you use henry's.. That doesn't works at first hehe.. Their to smooth.. Maybe if you just lay the whole string out a bit on the street for a while they get normal then..

Oh boy oh boy I need a 50m roll of string and find a building 25m heigh and then try how far it will come!!
