Columbia University Chinese Yo-Yo at Lunar Gala 2010
« on: February 28, 2010, 08:33:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

Last night, my diabolo club at Columbia University performed at an on-campus event. Here are two videos of our performance:

better quality and closer shot: Chinese Yo-Yo at Columbia University 2010 Lunar Gala
better angle, but left side slightly cut off: Lunar Gala 2010 - Diabolo

Our 7 performers (I know, a max of 6 are on the stage at a time) have between 6 months to 4 years of experience diaboloing (4 years would be me.) We use Taibolo diabolos, sticks, and string throughout the performance, with the following exceptions. Our long string is a nylon string from Taibolo, the LED diabolo we use is a Glary, and we use a Sundia Fly for long string vertax and the bit with vertax around-the-world. The songs used in this performance are "Electric Romeo" by Immediate Music and "Dragon Rider" by Jay Chou.

We are heavily influenced and inspired by MHD, TND, the Sharpes, and the many videos that we come across on this forum. This is the first performance video that we are proud to share on diabolo.ca, but we know that there is always room for improvement (the drops, bad syncing, stage presence, choreography, etc). We welcome any and all comments on this performance and look forward to your feedback!

Holy jeezus...this is STELLAR.  How long did you guys rehearse everything?  Looks like a lot of work went into this, so kudos to you guys for that.  I'm still a beginner in performance so I can't contribute anything to you guys for regarding the performance.  Rather, I learned more from you guys than you guys would from my post.  But anyway, those guys (or that guy) with 6 months of diabolo experience must have had a pretty nerve-wracking time up there, but it looks like they (or he) did great.  Keep up the good work guys!  I'm pretty sure with a bit more work you guys could be another big diabolo group worthy of mention in the diabolo world.  But that's just my opinion  :-D

@Midoryu,
Thanks for the compliments! We started creating this routine in December, with the bulk of it being done over our winter break. After everyone moved back to campus in late January we had rehearsals for at least 4 hours a week. We had pretty much already learned all the tricks prior to making the routine, so it was just a matter of getting them consistent and syncing with each other (which didn't go as well as we hoped.) This was our second time performing this routine. The first time we performed it was 3 weeks ago on Feb 7th, but we weren't quite ready at that point. That performance was decent, at best.
And yeah, we actually gave one of our newer members the solo towards the end. He usually gets the whip catch, but I guess nerves just got to him there. He's been diaboloing for around 9 months. Our other 6 members have 6 months, 1 year, 1.5 years, 2.5 years, 3 years, and 4 years of experience.

Woow
I have to say the first 3 minutes were ok... but afterwards your performance really came up to another level! Actually to the vertical level! I really loved the vertax passing and ideas around it with the giant string and the acrobatics! Very creative and so visual! I hope all of you can stay together to keep up your team work, there s a real big potential in all this and i will definitely look forward to your next performance videos!
Thanks for sharing this!

Nice show!
I think the idea is pretty good, i would suggest just to work on sync and to clear the tricks.

I normally prefer the high skilled one person performances. But this one has good skills and good ideas.

Very impressive!!!  The crowd liked it a bunch!  The long string vertax was my favorite part!!!

Thanks for the comments!

@Nico, @bourgeois.jason: Glad you liked our vertax parts! I do have to give credit to two videos from which we learned some of those tricks though. I'm not sure if most people have seen them...
We learned vertax around the world "go-down" (as we like to call it) from 4:25 in this video:
2009 體健盃 個人公開舞台組 第九名 楊仁志
We learned (then altered) the long string vertax from 3:25 in this video:
2009超級盃 馬來西亞代表的演出
And the vertax passing bit was, of course, from the Sharpes' videos

@Wis: Thanks for the tip. Yes, we will work on our syncing. We had planned our tricks to be in sync, but I guess we need some more practice. I've also been told that we should even sync our accelerations, so we can work on that too.

@NiekG: Yes, it was actually planned that way. They wanted the culture show to flow seamlessly with transitions between acts this year. We were unlucky that the act after us was a musical act (requiring a piano, mics, stands, and chairs). Still, I think having no MCs was for the better for the show as a whole. Last year, the MCs cracked a lame joke about diabolo sounding like the game Diablo, among other jokes marginally related to the other acts.

Ok.  2 things
1.  this is one of my favorite live performances that I've seen!  those two vertax tricks were insane!  We just had a performance tonight and if the crowd that we performed for saw your performance, they would have exploded in cheer.
2.  I applied to columbia and once I realized it had required english, I kind of stopped wanting to go there.  Soon I'll find out if I got in, and if I decide to go, I'd love to join your team!

@2d_Dima: Thanks! And we'd love to have you join us! If you have any questions about Columbia, feel free to send me a PM.

@Jasper: Thanks, though you are far too kind, because none of our members individually is as good as any of the guys in the other videos and I would hardly consider ourselves as good as TND, haha. Anyway, to answer your question, I just come across these videos randomly by clicking related videos on YouTube.

My goodness!  That was an amazingly well choreographed show!  You guys need to stop by the NYC juggling club sometime, we could sure use some more diabolists!  Keep it up.
