I quite honestly know just about nothing. My friend got me a diabolo for my birthday cuz i said i saw it in a video i was watching n it was really cool. so i have questions.

Is a diabolo supposed to have a bearing? mine has a small spacer in the middle that isnt a bearing.
How tight should the diabolo and its nuts be?

Welcome!

First off, if you have questions, try the search function in the forum, it is very helpful.
For your specific questions: The axle does not have to be a bearing. Some do have bearing, however. Some people use bearing diabolos, some use fixed axle. It is a matter of personal preference. It may be easier to learn on a bearing diabolo, but you can learn fine on fixed axles. Thats what I learned on.
The nuts/bolts should be tight enough that the axle does not rotate freely between the cups. If you have a new diabolo, odds are it is tightened fine. If it is too tight, it warps the shape of the cups, which might or might not change anything. Im not totally sure. Either way, in general, you do not want them too tight. Ratchet them tight. It will get really hard to turn and at that point, they are tight enough and possibly too tight.

I can't really answer most of the questions because I'm pretty much a beginner. I got an Higgin's Brother's Anti-Gravity diabolo about 9 months ago. I used it for a little while, but got out of it. I'm starting to get back into it.  :) As for how I got started, I'm actually mostly a yoyoer, but I'm starting to branch out into other skill toys. I saw Josh Yee on YouTube, a yoyoer/diaboloist/Astrojax/Contact Juggling, etc.  :P I saw him with a diabolo and decided to get one, being the Anti-Gravity diabolo.
