old dog learning new tricks

hi all, im new here so just thought id say hello. im not totally new to diabolo but its been a long time since i last had a go but recently found my old diabolo's in a clear out (finesse g3 and sundai fly) and started messing with it again and have found it a great way to clear my mind of everything else that is going on.
i was never very good with it before only being able to do very basic tricks but im hoping to change that especially as i now have allot more time on my hands being out of work.
had a comment of my nephew the other day sating arnt you a bit old for that (im 34) and my reply was if i enjoy it im not too old for it 
just wondering what age others on here are and how old was you when you started?

Hey old guy 

I started the same, found my old small toy shop diabolo when having a clear out, about two years ago now. I've now got two g4's and am totally hooked, I love this site and would never have progressed as much as I have with out it.
O yeah and I'll be 30 next month, I know how it feels to see all these kids pulling of amazing tricks but with time and practise, keep watching lots of vids and reading threads, well be like them one day

We have a guy on the forum named Jem who's practically old enough to be my dad (No offence Jem  ) and married.

That doesn't prevent him from being one of the best diaboloists on the forum IMO though

I was playing diabolo when I was around 14, I managed to...well...you know...the whip, some orbits and loops on arm and leg... It was just taking me too much time from playing computer or football so I gave up. Luckily for me, I took it out for a party one day, and I met a guy who was doing so routines from Jibe, and I felt in love with it. That happened when I was 22. The bad points are that you learn usually quite slower if you start so late (I need to believe that is because of the age because I have trained like crazy and still...), and that you tend to get injured faster (my left wrist forces me to stop playing for a week or two if I am dumb enough not to warm up properly, and I am). The good point is definitely that you could have never started to play diabolo, and it turns out that you really like it, as me. And it is about the fun, at least for old dogs, like Marko,
And by the way, eventually things happen. I managed to get three low, I am working on 3 high, and for example this guy has a bunch of great tricks and he started when he was 22, he is my age now (http://diabolo.ca/forum/index.php?topic=7954.msg98047#msg98047).
22 is not 34, but I hope it helped.

Haha, yea. We have a good group in Finland. Me, Aaro, Jussi, Samuli we're all older than 25. Half of us even over 30. The younger you are the more time you have for the practice. I'm sure I could keep up if I just could take more time away from the workplace   But don't let the age be any factor. Quite often you can over come brute volume of practice just by thinking what you're doing and using your head when you learn new tricks. Diabolo is very logical object after all

I think there is real advantages to start doing diabolo when you are young.. more free time (usually) and ability to learn little bit faster.. but in other hand there is bigger risk to get bored, frustrated and stop the whole thing. Old dog is much more patient.

Funny you should mention it I've got quite bit of new material and I'm looking at making a new vid hopefully by the end of this month.

Sufur - I had just turned 34 when  picked up the diabolo again in 2006 - don't do the Maths but I'm probably the oldest on the forum - I don't look it though!?
Oh well the older I get the wiser I get and the less I care about getting older.

O dear, now I feel old listening to all you young ones. If my calculations are correct, Jem you are slightly older than me, but you still beat hands down on the skills level.

You are as old as the woman you marry. So I married one 8 years younger. And before my old age kicks in and I forget everything, welcome Sufur to the forum from another newbie.

haha totally agree. In fact, i was older when i started diablo. actually i was 27

I was prop about 16 when i first had a go and got my first toy diabolo but started again 2 years ago, am now 22 and got the most time i have ever had to play (as gf is working late for 5 weeks) and just got 2d and corrections down but cant stop playing and want to learn so much more.   Its all about the fun

You're never too old to diabolo!!!

I'm 38 and been doing it for 13 years now. I still try to get 1 hour practice in each day although it can be tough with work and life.

Learning is no-where near as fast with me as with kids but for me it's not about the competition but the challenge of what I can do.

I love the fact that diabolo has a competitive edge but only if you choose to be and it's really individual.
