Design your own diabolo
« on: June 16, 2007, 06:58:11 AM »
OK, if you could design your own Diabolo, what would it be like? How would the cups and axle be? Big or small? Light or heavy? How would you like it to feel (grippy or smooth)? Would it be rubber or plastic etc? What accessorygear would you want to have available for it? Maybe you can use some already existing Diabolos as reference. Maybe some manufacturer could get ideas from this ;).

My ultimate diabolo would have:

Cups like the Diabig but larger. This is because I´m a big person and I think it looks better if the Diabolos then are also big. Material would be like the Fly´s kind of grippy plastic. I would want it to be available in different sizes because not every person is the same.
Same standard weight as the Diabigs or slightly lighter/heavier (depending on the size of it). Accessories for the weight would be weightrings applied on the outside of the cup (the rim?) to make it heavier and lighter washers and hubs to make it lighter.
Wide axles for easy handgrinds. Possibility to swap axle for bearing mode (like the Flys)
Accesories would be: weight/light kits, Lightkits charged by the sun (this would not be standard because my GIDs sometimes keep me awake at night :P), Smokedevice (Credit to Martin Mall for that one) and bearing mode (as mentioned above).

^OK, that would be my own ultimate diabolo. What would yours be like?

Alex!

Cups the same size as Fly diabolo
Slightly flexible plastic cups or really hard rubber, kinda like jumbo yohos
Has to have really shiny cups!
Axles like the Fly, with the possibility of bearing mode
Available in every single colour you can think of
Slightly heavier than the Flys
Most importantly, It has to have significant ridges in the cups so you can lift them with your foot! (I miss that from my Finesse)

My first thought was, the finesse is perfect for me anyway, but there are a few thing i could think of for something better.

I like the shape of the finesse as a whole, i much prefer the more open ended cups to the more t-cup shaped cup.  But the stuff its made of leaves something to be desired, i find mine get warped after a lot of use and never get back tot heir original shape. A new material that was still a little flexible but didn't lose shape, but also had the same brushed texture of the finesse would be perfect for me.
A way of attaching some sort of smoke device would be really cool to attach as an accessory, i also think bubbles is an idea.
I'm not bothered about bearings because i never use them and don't want to.
Axel-wise i'm not too sure. I like the idea of a normal axel with curved hubs for finger grinding, but i also like the straight hubs of the finesse. So in that area the finesse axel suits me fine, and i don't know how else to improve it.
I think the most important thing is about weight distribution across the cups and the hubs. I'm sure theres some weight ratio that some maths genius could work out to make diabolos more stable at any speed, but more weight on the outside of the cups is generally accepted to be a good way to do it. More though could be put into weight distribution.
And of course the lip under the cup is a must. ;)

That pretty much sums it up i guess.

my perfect diabolo....
like a finnesse G2 but with the ability to turn into ultramangus back when he was cool.

Well, probably a well engineered Yoho jumbo. Anodized axle, wide axle options, a better system for holding them together, probably the finnesse Alan key system. Perhaps a little more tacky, I'm not sure though, because the material seems perfect for me! Possibly a through one would be cool. perhaps a touch lighter, but not much! Oh and the ridge of a finnesse is a must have. pity no other companies have piked up on that :-\

mine would have to be finesse material because it just washes clean and doesn't scratch like the fly's, it would have a magical axel that you could switch from bearing to standard.  The light kits would fit without any weight added and the right shape for ufo grinds, kinda fly shaped.

Ok, so this may be some thread hijacking, but im concidering designing the 'perfect' diabolo and possibley getting it engineered and possibley be selling them. I would like to work with you guys to see what i should make it. If there is anything that you guys think are great, or terrible about certain diabolos then i would love to know and get your views. I will post a list of the rough design soon.

How about making the cups out of something else than rubber/plastic? I've dreamed about making wooden cups shaped like circuses :P, too bad I don't have the tools for it. It probably wouldn't amazingly strong but every cup would look different from the other. Or how about making cups of fiberglass/carbon fiber?

But at the moment Henry's Circus with Allround hubs seems to be quite perfect for me. Thought I haven't tried Yoho, Finesse G3, Fly or the Tiabolo  :D I'm especially interested in fly diabolos since the look wicked and I have heard only good things about them. Also Circus with JC hubs (wide or regular) seems interesting. To get a perfect diabolo for me just throw all of those in to a pot an stir it up and see what comes out  :D.

I'd say Diabig's, but so the axels can be swapped for bearings like with the Fly's. A slightly wider axel than the diabig would be nice with a bit of a groove in to minimize friction.

I'd also like some sort of multi-colour design on the inside of the cups (like the stickers you can buy) so you can see how fast the diabolo is spinning aswell as looking cool. The lip inside the cup would be like those in the renegades so you could do finger curls haha.

Behind your back is your front.

i'd like diabolo's that immediatly stop spinning when they hit the ground, i hate running after my diabolos when i drop (or having to search them) :-\

i strongly agree! i think the key to that is using a softer material like the finesse coz with a harder material like spinabolos less of the energy is taken out when it hits the floor so it just runs away!
the only problem with soft material is that you cant ufo but thats about it.

well, i more meant it like ''wouldnt it be great if your diabolos dont roll away anymore when you drop them'', not that i actually think this can be achieved :P

softer material might help making them roll away less tho

as long as there is a possibility that i might start to produce diabolos it could be unwise to say much.. but two things i have put some efford: 1) "bearing link" between multiple diabolos which means infinite "sprinklers" with as many diabolos that you can put to your string (and other trics where diabolos could touch each other with purpose) 2) "energy storage" system that moves mass from center to edges when diabolo spins faster, so it would spin a lot longer and with more energy than normal diabolo..

and yeah, that "bearing link" ring would mean that if you drop diabolo nicely (not in vertax :)) diabolo keep spinning but wont roll anywhere.. maybe hard to understand what i mean, so use your imagination..

Everyone hijack as much as you want by all means ;). I didn´t think anyone would actually talk about designing the "dream diabolos" so soon after the thread started. I hope you´ll get some good ideas for them.

My "good" list is already so I´ll have a run through all my diabolos again and check what I do/don´t like some more. It would be cool if more people did the same.

I was thinking about widening my Diabigs with a Fly-like axle and add some weight to the rims + getting the stability of the Fly´s in the air. Maybe that could make for a good model of what I´m looking for at least. Ofcourse everybody on the forum is different so maybe you should go by popular demand or something.

^Does this means 3D sprinklers too? Awesome if it works.

Doubled-up cups so the inside cup spins with the axle and the outside cups stays still (allowing diabolos to touch, etc).  Could also get the effect of spinners from car wheels aswell.

My dream diabolo would have the ability to be controlled by my mind so i would never drop.  But in reality i think i'd settle with a wide axled fly but cups made from a slightly more durable material (one of mine is mashed up because some kid dropped it on the road so much  >:().

hrmm guess we can go for the contradictions then.. =P

Wide axle finesses that are actually stable, with slightly harder cups that bounce up rather than sideways from spin.
those theoretical kinetic light kits would be good too =]

the perfect diabolo for me would be a finese and a circus put together e.g weight of circus, ridges of finese, and as for add ons: light kits weight kits extended axels basically everything! ;D
