what kind of whips? japanese?whip catches? If its japanese then I would start on nick's trick of the week a while back. Or if it is whip catches then I would watch some of the fedc videos.

Hope this helps,

Whip catches;
underarm whip: whip catch done underarm(quite obvious really)

blind whip:a whip catch of any kind without being able to see the diabolo(cover your eye's, easiest if thrown behind you while facing left[for righties])

Behind the back whip:underarm whip behind the back

between the legs whip catch:speaks for itself really(whip it from between
your legs, dangerous)

two hands whip:a whip catch made with 2 hands

bounce whip:throw, bounce, whip, simple

bounce whip between the legs:throw, bounce, jump, whip between the legs

whip duicide:whip catch, follow through with a duicide (nearly all whip catches can follow through with duiciede in some way)

whip duicide, caught behind the back:http://gibee.club.fr/diabolo/diab1_en.htm   There's a video here on JiBe's site.

whip duicide genocide:http://www.diabolo.ca/tricks.htm Matt Hall 16th-22nd  May

2d whip duicide start:whip, duicide, throw 2nd diabolo, catch duicide, catch 2nd diabolo

3d whip duicide start:same as above but throw 2nd and 3rd diabolo(into high, not low)

Hope that helps for now, i will try to find some more vids soon

Thanx Martijn

P.S. can someone tell me how to get URL's to work, and the same with quotes, underline, bold etc. i click the button and type it in but it just puts the letters around the text and doesn't work as a link, same problem with others.

You have to manage that in your profile. Those codes are called BBCode. Have a search there, and I'm sure you'll find out. Good luck.

another thing about whip's is that there are a lot of knots you can do to get into them, a half spaghetti is one good way as is a hook and loop(see diabolotricks.com)

Japanese Whips

Anyone got any advice on how to do Japanese Whips? (i.e. what sort of string length you should be using, what hand movements etc. you need to do)

I can do a sort of substitute by 'climbing' down the right handstick string with both hands and making a loop that way, but the real thing looks well better.
right now, i see clearer than most,
i sit here continuing with this cheese on toast

Unfortunately, Japanese whips or slack whips are difficult to explain in words. It is much easier to give a demonstration. If you were at the EJC in Ptuj there was a great workshop on slack tricks by a Czech diabolo player (Rezi?).
I shall attempt a description of the two basic slack whips. (From a right handed view point).
1. Slack whip to trapeze:- From an open string (Normal position)
- Lift diabolo upwards gently. Diabolo should NOT leave string.
- Bring right hand stick into the string on RIGHT side of diabolo from above.
- This should form a loop of slack string around the right hand stick.
- This loop travels over the top of the hand stick and catches the diabolo around the far cup.
- The diabolo should now be a trapeze position.

2. Slack under whip
- Lift diabolo upwards gently. Diabolo should NOT leave string.
- Bring right hand stick into the string on RIGHT side of diabolo from below.
- This should form a loop of string around the right hand stick.
- This loop travels under the hand stick and catches the diabolo around the far cup from underneath.
- The diabolo should be in a position that looks like a trapeze, but isn't.
- Throw the diabolo over the top of the left handstick and let the string drop off the right hand stick.
- You should now be in a right backside position.

I hope that this is useful and makes some sense. These tricks are much easier to learn from somebody showing you, so you should go to a convention or a local club and ask someone to show you.
The first thing that you should practise is making the loop and understanding where the loop is formed. A good way to practise this is to take just the sticks and string and try making the loop around the right stick and catching it over the end of the left stick. This puts you in the Cat's Cradle position. Once you get the hang of making the loop, try doing it with the diabolo on the string.
As for string length, I'm sure whatever you usually use will be fine. It would probably be harder with a very short string, but any reasonable length should work.
Hope that this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
Good Luck,
Nick.

sound great !

I invented a great one last week:)
(hope my English is good enough^^)

you need a Diabolo which can bounce and a constant(?) floor such as in a gym. I use my left hand to get speed...

1. Play the diabolo in front of your body (get speed).
2. Throw it.
3. Catch it behind your body on the right side (the string is behind your body)
4. Let it roll on the string behind your body to the left side
5. throw it with less power over your left stick so that it bounce on the floor
- now it should jump back to you
6. then catch it with a whip
